Re: 1985 Mercruiser 140 Won't Start or Manually Turn.
I hate to say it, but it kind of sounds like you should cut your losses on this one, interior shot, engine shot, who knows what condition the drive is in? Part out the boat and try to get back the money you spent on the purchase.
Well, that's unless you want a project to work on over the winter. It's going to cost more money to rebuild your existing boat (plus all the blood sweat and tears) than to buy another that does not need all that work.
That's what I was planning on doing fishrdan, is making it a winter project. I have all the material to redo the interior, leftovers from when I restored the interior on another boat of mine. The interior is the least of my worries. I didn't buy this boat trying to be cheap, but to simply take it and make it like new. I've done it to cars plenty of times, and for some reason, there's no feeling like restoring something that didn't work at all, then using it like it's new after the restoration.
I'm going to try a different approach and see what you guys think. My new question/path is to find out what putting a in different engine (different horsepower and brand engine) would consist of, as far as another outdrive and all the changes I would need to make to have this work. I really want to rebuild an engine, instead of buying one that is brand new or buying one like 1980Coronado's engine, simply for the experience and the gratification of doing it myself. I have already started to part out this engine, and I could possibly make some trades on a different engine and outdrive, one that has no cracks in the block, and turns easily. I went and saw the engine, he started it right up and it ran fine. Started it multiple times. He has a few of them. He makes it sound very easy, however, I wanted to check with you guys and get your thoughts.
Thanks again for all the input and advice. And 1980Coronado, if I don't find any other route, I'll be coming your way to talk business with you.
