Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

ok i recieved some trailer stuff and was wondering a few things before i start

1- stainless steel staples for bunk carpet. can they be p/u locally or is that an online thing

2- i've seen these things that go on top of the bunks suppose to save the boat alittle. does anyone have any experirnce with these? also would i need to cut the bunks down the width of these to make the boat sit properly on the trailer again?

Home Depot/Lowes have them http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 says not for marine use but I'm thinking that's more a saltwater things. Should be fine for our uses. It's what I used.

Are you talking about those bunk slicks? I don't think their intended purpose is to save the hull. I think it's just to make it slide off easier. I don't think a carpeted bunk is going to harm our boats. Unless you're having difficulty launching, I'd forget about them.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

Hey Joe, hope this is not to late... I used 5 cans of zinc chromate for the bottom and transom, and almost 9 cans of etching primer on the upper remaining's {hull & topside}...that's not counting about 6 cans of rusto primer on top of it all, just for good measure.

I used standard staples, easy enough to add a few now and then as needed imo.

No experience with the slick slide thingy's.

I knew there's a good chance they won't hold up well, but since I had regulars on hand and all...I did add a bead of adhesive along each edge of the carpet, on the bottom of the bunks...oh well, give me another project to look forward too I guess ...but thanks for the heads up!

i will go with the stainless staples and will just keep the carpeted bunks(it's a float on trailer and really easy to load and launch.
i hooked up with a paint guy and he really knows his stuff i bought some primer and will ectch it my self(he has done this himself big savings) also i can show him the marine paints labels and msds and he will guide me thru should be cheaper with out the marine word on it. i've had alot of guys down here tell me the same thing we will see!!!!!

Wow thats alot of primer, i used about a 1/4 can of zinc chromate on mine. If the paint is ok you dont have to prime it, scuff it with red 3m scuff pad with some scuff soap and paint it. Only prime bare aluminum.

Did you strip your entire boat?

the hull had some kind of coating on it and i took it down to bare alum.( there are some pics in the tread) that's why i'm etching the alum my self and using a primer...cost

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

the more i get into the more i find! i removed the fenders from the trailer to find a long bracket that is used to bolt the springs to the trailer. there are 2 bolts that are rusted i plan on cutting them of and replace with ss. then there are the longer bolts that go thru the springs and the shackles and they are also rusted up. i'm thinking of changing the as well . should the trailer be jacked up and the axle hang ????

i want to work on the fenders of the trailer(inspired by archbuilder) i want to make it strong enough to step on. you can see in the photo there is a small bunk that only holds the fender. it is bolted to the trailer and the fender is screwed to it's side. you can see it has been stepped on alot.

my plan is to insert some brackets under the fender to reinforce it to stand on
right now the pics are in my mind... hopefully will share soon

Try calling a concrete supply company. Most residential and commercial jobs require thick layers of heavy foam to meet current building code insulation values.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

I've seen that pic floating around...last year one of my friends neighbors grand daughter kept backing the boat in, couldn't get it off the trailer (because it was still strapped to the trailer at the transom)....kept backing, got out (it was a standard) without putting on the parking break....you know what happened next! Needless to say Grandpa was a little pissed about his boat and truck!

Joe my steps were a lot of work, but are they worth it now! I get in and out of the boat constantly now that I'm working on the interior. And it will be nice when loading or unloading it for weekend outings. Its amazing what you can spend on hardware huh? I was at Ace 3 times yesterday in the stainless section.

yes arch the fender/steps are under serious thought. i think i have a design in my mind(dangerous place to be) :p. i gonna prime the hull this weekend and then paint next(if i can decide on a color, been leaning toward what EZ did. remember imitation is the best form of flattery) that gives me 2 weeks to do it before putting the boat back on the trailer (just makes it easier).

i think i found a insulation company that has 4x8 pink sheets :) will check on monday
what am going to do with 60 noodles  maybe use both kinds of foam
(didn't EZ do that too?)
