Hey Jim, not to much progress, working on trucks and equipment in rain. I did get the get the transom shield and bracket installed. Working this morning, then of to Alberta for the weekend, to see the kids, and go to the Naked Lady's owner 50th bday party.

 Lol, sorry about that Glen. I have been reading too many threads and lost track of your vessel. I remembered afterwards that your allowed to tow your Starcraft behind the 5th wheel, up to the 20 foot mark there in Saskatchewan. We are not allowed that luxury here in BC. But I am more than happy with our sweet 16:)

Have fun with your family and friends
Rusty

Edit: Sunny today...rain tonight

Wait wait wait... Did I read this correctly or has my dyslexia kicked in again. You can tow a 5th wheel trailer and a boat at the same time behind a truck while in Canada? That's got to be an interesting launch situation.

"Tell me when I get down the ramp and into the water, but I don't want to down the axles."
"Which ones?"
"The trailers."
"Yeah, which one!"

Re: 1986 ss 201

Still raining, so I got a little further yesterday. While in Alberta I picked up a piece of 1/4" aluminum sheet 49"X 16"for $10, good deal around here. I didn't like how the transom eyes had pulled into the wood badly and were loose and leaking, so these plates should fix that.

The wood stiffners that go inside the engine stringers seemed to me to be a little under engineered, so I pulled a Jason:D and laminated a 24" long piece of 1/4"aluminum to the underside with PL Premium. Instead of lag bolts to hold the motor mounts down I am going to use 1/2"stainless bolts and nuts. I will drill two 1&1/4" holes, on each side, in the aluminum engine stringers to access the nuts.

Heres a couple pics of the transom parts installed and ready for the motor and outdrive.

Glen,
I like your idea for adding strength to the eye bolts off the transom. I too noticed my eye bolts were sunk into the transom and needed to be fixed, but the bolts had been shortened so they need to be replaced as well.
The outdrive mount looks good

Nice looking stringer sandwitch!!! I prefer mine with a little foamular... but those will do!! :D

Great progress... almost ready for the motor to go back in. Funny that the transom eye bolts were pulling through... I had the same issue... but the new ones went through the alum skin on the transom... so (hopefully) problem solved!

Nice work man!

Glen - Do you have webs between you toes yet? Seems like you've had rain for over a month up there. At least you have time for boat work that was intended to be winter work. Looks like you better file the flight plan for the motor. She's gonna be in the air shortly aiming for the motor mounts.

Thanks Rusty, the transom eyes seem to do that on all these, was a cheap easy fix.

GA, gonna need em soon, it's been raining here for 6 weeks off and on, starting to get a little tired of it. Still got lots to do before the motor can go in, and the budget is getting a little low. Don't want to tick off the Admiral:facepalm:

Re: 1986 ss 201

Dozer,
Nice boat. I bought one just like it a couple years ago, beige with a 140 mercruiser. I had some issues a couple weekends ago with water in the fuel. uncovered the tank and there it was. 2 inches of water sitting on top of the tank, with no way to drain through the foam. Cleaned it all up and found a screw missing from the sending unit. The floor I don't believe is original, and I am not sure if the person who did it even used marine ply. They are all water logged and weigh a ton. I am considering replacing the plywood with an aluminum floor. Other then expensive, what are your thoughts?

Hey tigger thanks for stopping by. Like you said aluminum would be expensive, and you would need lots of it. Being in Florida I would imagine you are in salt water a lot. You will have to pull your tank to check it for corroision. The ply support under the tank will be totally shot. Good luck

Re: 1986 ss 201

Dozer,
Getting ready to do the floors in mine. Aluminum is way out of my price range, I had a line on some Aluminum honeycomb but but it didn't work out. I was wondering what size floor boards you were planning on going with. I was thinking 1/2" marine ply, triple sealed, and then completely encased in vinyl flooring (all sides covered and seams sealed). How long/ wide are you cutting your boards? I know they came with 12' sections under the seats, but I don't want to go over 4' per length if possible. Also, are you going to float your boards, or anchor them down. Looking at your pictures, it looks like the only place to attach them is in the center. How do you plan (if at all) to replace the foam? Is it worth the trouble it has caused with water retention? Just picking your brain. We had a lot of rain from Tropical Storm Debbie last week and it washed out the only brigde leading to where my boat is kept so I cant do a whole lot on it. Hopeing to get started on demo around the 4th, unless of course I delay it and put her in the water for some rest and relax!!

tigger--you've already stared work on the boat...its currently likely undergoing leak testing unless you have it inverted! the factory put the floorboards in laterally in most boats. 1/2" is lighter than the 5/8 it came with and will probably flex underfoot, esp since much "1/2" is actually 15/32. there are tons of threads discussing all the Qs you asked....use your down time to do the reading

Want to see an update! I like your work.

Not much to show, the rain has quit here after 10 weeks, so we are playing catch up at work, did get some motor parts ordered though.

Hey Tigger, I use 5/8 ply for the floors, I like how it adds considerable strength with out the weight of 3/4. I use G1S fir ply with three to four coats of Spar varnish. The floor in the 201 was 3, 12' sheets of 1/2 in run front to back, they were attached on the rib ends and the two stringers.

Man, about time the sun came out. You must need more boat cash by now. And I bet the wife is happy to see you off to work in the morning.
