Re: 1986 ss 201

Dozer, you're in good company.....5/8 is the compromise the factory made on both of my boats. drove me nuts til i figured it out. along with their dang 5/32 reevits....

B2, nice thing about 5/32 reevits they are real easy to make 3/16!!

Man, about time the sun came out. You must need more boat cash by now. And I bet the wife is happy to see you off to work in the morning.

Hey GA, ya it is good to be back to work, I'm sure the Admiral is happy about it to.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Not much to show, the rain has quit here after 10 weeks, so we are playing catch up at work, did get some motor parts ordered though.

Hey Tigger, I use 5/8 ply for the floors, I like how it adds considerable strength with out the weight of 3/4. I use G1S fir ply with three to four coats of Spar varnish. The floor in the 201 was 3, 12' sheets of 1/2 in run front to back, they were attached on the rib ends and the two stringers.

Dozer,
I can't get 12' sheets here. I a thinking about 5/8" sealed w/ the Spar varnish (or equivlent). I would run an 8' piece from the consoles back and then a 4' to the stern. Rough measurements looked to be about 25" wide. Does this sound right? I am really hoping they are 24". If not I might expand the stingers so that 24" will work on the outsides and jsut cut the center pieces wider to make up for it. What are your thoughts?

Tigger,
Doesn't 8' piece from the consoles back & then 4' to the stern give ya a double layer at the transom & none at the bow? Unless your SS is a rare double stern boat......

Do you have a thread started on your project? Pix there will help get ya some answers to the many questions that will come up. Esp w. the tin crowd, they are drawn to new threads like a weight-challenged kid is drawn to free cake:rolleyes:

OK, someones math is off, hopefully not mine. Currently there is 1 piece 12' long that runs fr the console all the way back to the stern. Since i cant get a single 12' piece I was going to start from the console with an 8' piece and then a 4' piece from where that one ends to the stern (8+4=12 right?). I heard the bridge to get to my boat should be open this week so hopefully I can start on it this weekend. Once I get to it I will start posting some pictures here and starting a new thread. Working on a tight budget so I am trying to use Dozer's project to gather as much stuff as I can before actually downing the boat.

Re: 1986 ss 201

I found some 5/8" Marine ply for about $65 a sheet. I have to drive into downtown Jacksonville to get is but hopefully this week I will get an early day at work to run up there.

-Dozer, can you tell me what the width of your pieces are and if i can make it work with 24" on the port and starboard sides? That would save me quite a bit of wasted material.

I am also thinking of using PVC trim boards from Lowes as backers for the bolsters in the bow and along the top of the gunwales, I just need to figure out how to get the vinyl attached to them.

that's a great price on marine ply. i was paying abt $75/sheet for 1/2". grab it while you can.

Nautolex adhesive will work for the vinyl. really, Liquid Nails type stuff would probably do the job....not structural or below water line

I heard the bridge is now open!! Hopefully I can get out of work in time to go get it. Now, for the weekend, work on the boat or take it out on the water?!?!?

Hey Rusty, ya it stopped raining, so now we are whinning about the heat, typical. Real busy at work, but holidays are coming quick and 2 weeks at the lake is looking good.

Should have some photos of the little bit of progress and the two boxes of parts that came in soon.

Okay finally just a little bit of progress. While I was cleaning up the exhaust componets this is what I found!!

Parts001.jpg

So that is a couple hundred bucks of the budget going the wrong way.

I got all the exhaust parts cleaned up and painted including the new manifold,

Parts003.jpg

when I pulled the motor, only one exhaust shutter was in the y pipe, after I got the y pipe off the transom sheild I probed around looking for the other shutter, no luck. Then when I went to paint it look what fell out. I think this the reason the ports side was real warm and the starboard side cold when I ran the motor.

And the pile of parts waiting to be installed.

Not 100% sure. I think the title said 206VS. When I Googled it, the only thing that came up was the boat you are redoing and other than the color they looked identical.
