Re: 1986 ss 201

Last two posts on the front for the rear deck. Theses are the steps for covering the compartment doors.

Cut the vinyl, I sprayed a little bit of Spray 90 on both the vinyl and the ply around the hole for the latch, ( makes installing the latch easier)

Draw all four sides in and staple.

Start on the corners, working them in tight a little at a time making small pleats to take up the excess vinyl.

I'm not trying to say this is the best or only way to do this but it works well from trial and error, Heaven knows we never stop learning when we are working on these projects.
Well off to work, hoping to get the dog house vinyled this weekend, we will see if work cooperates.

Looks terrific Glen. Nice step by step... I think even I could duplicate the steps the way you have laid it out!

Here's to keeping learning!!!

Cheers.

Thanks again GA, tour making me

Hey shark, thanks for stopping by and the compliments. The 201's are hard to find, I have only seen 3 in as many years. There was one for sale in Oregon a while back on C/L. According to the guy I spoke with at Starcraft they only build 700 over the three years they were in production.

Thanks Jim, tomorrow I start on the sewing, I will post up a step x step on it as well, I hope.

Re: 1986 ss 201

This is going to take three posts to complete the first part of the Dog House.
First thing I did this morning was take an hour to clean and lube the sewing machine and recess it into a sheet of plywood, to make sewing easier.

doghouse002.jpg

Next I took some scrap vinyl and practiced the seams, to figure out the beast way to sew the seam. The sides of the DH don't have foam on them so I wanted a seam that laid flat. I went with three seams per to have them lay flat plus it gave a nice line. I find that a half inch works well for the seams, mark them accuratley with a pencil.

doghouse001.jpg

It is real important to sew straight seams to make the job look good.

doghouse003.jpg

This is the second and third pass to lay the seam flat.

Make sure to set your machine to a long stich, if the stiches are too close togehter it will weaken the vinyl. The next two photos show the difference in the two seams, the first one is without the second and third pass.

doghouse005.jpg

Next we have the first two pieces layed out and pinned ready to sew.

doghouse007.jpg

I found it was real awkward to feed the piece through the machine with so much material, so I rolled up the excess and used paper clips to hold them while I sewed.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Last one for now. Next photo is of the piece ready to install. I had some trouble with sewing the second and third seams on the large panel, it has to be done with the good side of the vinyl on the outside and my macine did not want to feed properly, because the vinyl sticks to the base of the machine and kept shortening my stiches, so one side does not have a real straight or nice seam on the left side, OH WELL stuff happens.

doghouse009.jpg

One hint to remember when stapling on the piece is always overlap the vinyl as not to create a pocket for water to catch in, the upper most fold must cover the lower.

doghouse010.jpg

This the DH vinyled I am going to put trim around the opening later.

doghouse012.jpg

Next I will start on the cover, it only gets more difficult.

It certainly looks like you've stitched some vinyl before... Did you use spray adhesive on the doghouse too? Or ease the plywood edges, since you're not using any foam & batting?

Thanks JB, now that's a mans pin cushion, probably be pretty high maintainance though!!.
I eased all the edges, and used spray adesive on the light grey face around the opening and all the compound curves.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Just spent the last 4 hours out in the shop working on the top of the dog house, and I can tell you this is the most important tool any DIY boat upholstery guy can have.

sewing003.jpg

I think I might have made an eazy project quite difficult, not only do I have to line the grey top of the DH up square to the DH, but the seams between the Blue and gray have to line up prfectly or it looks like @#$!, that's why the above tool is so valuable.

I tried using a piping foot for the top but found the zipper foot to work much better.

sewing001.jpg

Here is a pic of the vinyl for the top cut out, only a 1/4 inch over size, so it is slightly undersize to stretch over the foam on the top.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Sunday morning out in the shop at 430, working on the DH lid. 1st photo is the second attempt at lining up the grey front panel with the top so the lines match up.

Next three are getting started in the sewing machine.

Sewing is complete, it turned out real nice the second go around.
This is the product I chose for piping Embossed Cushion Welt - 100 yard roll , it is very soft and comes on a large variety of colors, and it is super eazy to work with.

Re: 1986 ss 201

The last of the lid.
Getting it ready to fasten to the frame, I used spray 90 on the front grey panel to ensure it stayed put in the right spot. I also glued 1"of foam to the top for padding.

topofDH006.jpg

Then folded the sides down all the way around.

topofDH007.jpg

The trick to stapling the cover on is to pull the vinyl down evenly all the way around to get even compression on the foam and straight lines for the piping. It took a little bit of adjusting in couple area.

The finished Dog House

Hey Glen,

Just getting caught up here on your last two days of "domestic sewing bliss"! :) I gotta say man, it looks fantanstic! Wow!!!!

I can only imagine how tought it is to get all the piping lined up and the sewing seams square! Nice work and thanks for detailing it out. This is an invaluable section to those who are vinyling OR to a degree carpeting!

Great stuff.

Hey Jim thanks, hope the play by play helps you out. The colored vinyl piping is a huge help, and surprisinly easy to line up, I remember when I was kid my Mother would sew yards of the stuff for Dad. An extra step and extra bulk for your seam. The seams on the other hand are real tough to get lined up.
