I was going to suggest the same thing as Jim. Then I thought, nah, Dozer's been to the rodeo before.

No doubt about that! Sometimes it is the simple things the best of us over look!!!

Ya guys I been bucked off on my head a few times ( might be the problem)

Thanks Paul, never a dull moment, what did you decide on your outboard dilemma?

I hate not knowing what's going on with my motor.:frusty: So I did another compression test all 6 are the same just low compared to what the manual says, now I think the motor only has about 3 hours on it total (but can't confirm that with the P/O) if it is new that would explain the lower #s not broke in yet. I know all the fuel filters are new I put them in and the tank is clean as a whistle cus I emptied it and clean it. It has 30 gal of fresh Premium gas in it with a can of Seafoam. I pulled the plugs like I was told in the Mercruiser forum to see what they looked like, now they only have an hour tops on them so not a lot of time to get color so to speak, but they look like they just came out of the box.

That tells me not enough fuel, but I can firewall the throttle from a dead start and there is not a second hesitation or burble till I hit 4200 rpm and there it dies?

Go figure????

Re: 1986 ss 201

that doesn't eliminate fuel issues and that's where i'd continue looking. on cars, the first place you'll notice fuel supply issues is not during full throttle acceleration, it's sustained hard running in top gear....like over time, the fuel system can't keep up with engine's demands. the fuel for immediate acceleration like you're describing comes from the reserve in the float bowl, which is why they have float bowls. what happens once the float bowl empties if the supply can't keep up with the demand is the problem.

OTOH, i'd expct fuel supply issues would show up as a lean condition and your plugs do look perfect.

the other Q is spark advance, which might explain what you're seeing. that's cheap to check. mark your distrib position, then loosen clamp while on the water and play with advancing and retarding things a tiny bit to see if it improves

Thanks Bruce, I'm going to try to get out Saturday, with the timing light again, but I'm thinking the problem is the carb, I would really like to see plugs on the black side over the clean or white. Even with gas $5.48 a US gal.

Hey glenn

I am sorry to through this one out there buddy, I think your motor is shot man, its ok you can send the big ole girl down here for proper disposal.

Not that I have anything really usefull to add as I am an outboard only kind of guy, but there isn't a throttle stop screw inside of the throttle box is there?

Premium Fuel = Premium price :)

I think I'll likely stick with my motor, mainly financial reasons.

I just overhauled my carbs, all new gaskets, ect. Get out to the lake and boat started fine, idled out of the marina fine, hit the throttle and Blah. 10 mph tops. I know the feeling of obsessed with the problem. I had to tear in to it the next morning, and found I switched top carb with bottom carb. Do'h

Re: 1986 ss 201

hopefully the speed problem is that simple, but still 38mph is not all that bad... Compression test had been done, eh? I have the 4.3 in my tow rig... sure the ign is good, eh? Honestly I'm not sure aboot the differences with the thunderbolt ign compaired to my chevy ign, but I could raddle off all sorts of reasons powre could not be all there... if a dist system pull off the dist cap and make sure all the screws are there in the rotour, I had one work it's way oot and gave me a top speed of aboot 55mph this one time, ran/idled fine but the rotour was wild and free!! in that same area a big one there would be the timing advance depending on the setup on the s10 there are two thermo sensors, one four the gauge, and the othre four the computre, but that's assuming it's fuel injection... also a general blockage in the exaust...

(I'm working on my canadian there eh  :behindsofa:)

Hey Sig, Ya you might have to come get her;) Throttles opening all the way, I checked that last weekend.

It's not sounding good for gas prices for the rest of the summer, maybe $6.00 a gal for Premium. Glad you figured out your problem easy, I hate it when a guy doe's the DOH thing.

Depends on which state you live in Chris, Alaskans see Polar bear way more than us.:D

Couple more trips up here and you will have the EH down as good as Jason:laugh:
Compression is good, checked distributor the other day, not much in there all advance curve is done through the Thunderbolt module. Hoping to get out on the lake this weekend to do some more testing on the fuel system. The carb is my main suspect, it was in terrible shape when I brought the SS home. I rebuilt it but it still has a lot of rust on the butterflys and steel components.

any possibility a butterfly is binding? ifd you don't come up with anything more obvious, maybe pull the carb apart again and burnish all crusty bits with red scotchbrite? gun cleaning kits work well for cleaning throttle shaft etc bores but i usually avoid the brass brush to keep from gouging aluminum of carb casting.

if all else fails, it's clearly time to 86 the carb and buy this Holley TBI i have sitting in the garage. a Megasquirt to control it, a few sensors, and you be rockin.

Thanks for the offer Bruce, I just ordered a new carb off Fleabay for it, don't want to chance burning her up.

Carb arrived and is installed, I also ordered a fuel pump just in case. It will not quit raining here long enough for the mud to dry up, and when we do get a break in the rain the wind blows at 30 to 50 mph. Here's hoping this week improves.

Got done early today and took her out to the lake for a test hop:frusty: The lake was the nicest I've seen it since the photo shoot for the Naked Lady, not a ripple on the water, 25C 70F boat runs like a piece of @$@#$, got a gas leak at the carb filter smoking black and it doesn't seem to want to adjust, oh well back to the drawing board.
