Hi all,
I recently and maybe regretably purchased a 86 islander at a auction. I inspected the boat as best as could before the auction, appeared to be in better than average condition, it is a 205 mercruiser that does run great with 310 hours. Upon getting it home I discovered that the transom is rotted below the floor line and when we put it in the water the first time, there is a leak around the outdrive. That appears to be the boot on the shift cable. The question I have is this, I have no experience with I/O boats, can i repair this myself or do I need to have somebody pull the outdrive and reinstall it for me, I figure if I need to pull the outdrive might as well replace the transom at the same time. Any help with this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey, welcome to iboats!

Id say you'd have some luck over on the Merc IO section on your motor/outdrive questions. I will say that for your transom to be replaced you'll need to pull EVERYTHING out, rebuild the transom, and then hook EVERYTHING back up again.

Post up some photos of that auction score eh!

Cheers!

Check out this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=359551

He's a local friend of mine. He took his boat to a marine mechanic who pulled the engine for him. He brought the boat back home and replaced the transom. Then he took it back and had everything reinstalled. The price he paid was very reasonable. Although it's a big job, I'm thinking it's probably pretty straightforward to a professional so you should be able to call around an get esitmates.

Hey thanks for the input guys, I actually took the boat to a local marine mechanic today, hes going to pull everything and reinstall everything after I put the transom in for around 600 that includes the hose and gimble bearing kit, so didnt think that was to awfull bad. Hopefully I will be good to go after that outside a needing a couple of new gauges.
Thanks for the help

Seems reasonable to me. That is sure a healthy amount of work he'd be doing! Cheers!

Well, so long as that motor is in good shape I think 5K is about the going rate for a super rig like that. Have fun man!
