I glued and nailed it, lil buggy. There are a couple of nail heads that are still visible. My air nailer didn't quite punch them in. I'll tap those deeper and put a little color on them before I apply the final coat of varnish to the trim. Once that sets, I'll buff the whole thing out a little and then apply the bar coat.

Thanks to Master dock builder, chriscraft254, for his idea. I re-cut the corners to square them off which made my edge trim cuts possible.

BTW, no stain on any of the wood. Just the natural amber color of the Spar Varnish. I tested some Mahogany stain on a piece of the Mahogany trim. WAAAYY to red against the Teak. I've only got one coat of the Spar Varnish on the Mahogany trim presently. I think it'll darken up a little more with the next coat and give more of that pop I'm looking for.

The table looks great! Glad to see progress on it. Can't wait to see it in the boat, and your next veneering project.

Thanks, Mustang. I'm not yet in your league with those glass smooth varnish finishes! I'm really looking forward to seeing what that veneer does to the look of the bulkhead inside. I don't know yet whether I'm going to want a glossy varnish finish or if I want to try for the hand oiled look so that the table is the focal point. We'll see. ...and thanks for the tip on that veneer!

Table looks great! I see the 45 degrees worked out well. If your not happy with the color of the mahogany trim, you could stain it black to match the color in the design you put in the center of the table.

By the way, not to derail your thread, but I do more than decks,lol

BSnB, I'm going with high gloss wood, but am actually still up in the air on its final look. It might be too much, and if that proves true, it will all be sanded and hit with satin or rubbed effect varnish. Thats the nice thing on the wood veneer, it should be able to oil up like any regular teak.

I stand corrected, Sir. I see I need to remove the "deck" qualifier and simply call you Master Builder and Lord of the Lights.Beautiful house, Budd!

I did consider some Ebony stain to darken those edges, and might have done that if I'd gone with an Oak trim. The photo's don't do it justice. There is a difference in color between the Teak and the Mahogany and with another light coat of varnish, that Mahogany should set the whole thing off nicely. Once I finish the bar-top coating, I'll try to get a final picture with my camera. These photo's are from my cell phone.

On another subject, I'm getting pressure from my Marina to set a launch date. It seems everyone wants to get in the water early this year. Because of the design of my trailer, I can't get under it to do the bottom so they've got to hoist it up on some stands for me. I was soooooo looking forward to scraping and sanding the entire bottom. Time may now force me to do just a quick sanding and painting with Bottomkote until haul out next year.

That's what I was thinking, mustang. Because it's real wood, it takes varnish, stain and oil perfectly. I'm leaning toward an oil finish. If I find that I want a gloss varnish finish, I can always add that.

make sure they go over your engines before spash, to figure out what was going on with them. i am sure lord of the lights will give you an idea how quickly you can scuff that stuff up with the right sander for the quick recoat,,,i believe most just take off the flakes than recoat thats why when you finally get it all off it's soo thick.just take some time while your under there to see if there is anything you need to adress. if you recoat you should wait an extra year to get the valu out of the paint,lol that allows you to put it off another few years,lol
which is prolly what i'd do anyway, if i actuallly had bottompaint. i am jealouse of those of you that do have it,(hose off at the end of the year:facepalm: and your done no nasties.

also now we know that the marina is pressuring for a splash we are too.
get it done and get her wet, dont forget the pics

Lol, you guys are to funny! I think the tables going to look steller. I'm working on a little wood myself:facepalm:lol I varish my wood atleast 7 times a day,lmao. No really, I'm working on some wood. Great excuse on the bottom paint, I'd stick with that one.. Its a real good winter project anyway. Time to enjoy the boat.

Ya gotta have a little wood on a boat and keep it polished, Budd. It can never be shiny enough, in my opinion. IF it's going to get wet, ya gotta keep the wood protected. I don't think 7 coats is too much sometimes.

I'm sticking to the excuse that the Marina is pressuring me to launch. I've also had the thought that by waiting until fall to strip the paint off the bottom that this would allow the hull to dry over the winter giving me a better barrier coat finish.

In any event, life is interupting and I'll have too little time to get all of that done this Spring before launch. The Admiral wants to visit our new Grandbaby so we're driving to Georgia the second week of April. That leaves me this week to buff out the hull and get a coat of paint on the bottom. Looks like the launch will be delayed until the third week.

No, I haven't applied the bar top coating yet. The weather has been too cool and damp here to get that done. Reports for today are that it will warm up enough to get the final varnish coat on the trim which should be cured enough by tomorrow AM to do the Bar Top coating then. I'll post progress pics. It doesn't look good for getting up to the boat this weekend. Yard work and table work today and we're having my Mother over for a BBQ tomorrow.

Thanks, lil buggy, the Grandson was born in January and we were lucky enough to be there for it. I've got him a fishing pole, but his hobbies and interests remain focused on filing diapers and napping. Not such a bad life when ya think about it.

Just baby steps, Budd, I did get the Bar Top coating on the table and it looks great. I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet, but I will. The stuff is pretty easy to use too. The instructions say to mix the 2 part epoxy thoroughly and then pour it on and it will self level. One problem was that I was doing this job out in my unheated garage at about 55 degrees. The stuff pours like thick honey and it doesn't exactly flow at 55 degrees so I took an 18 inch piece of 1 x 6 and used that to draw the goop across the table so that it was about the same thickness overall. I lost quite a bit over the edges of the table and onto the garage floor and also ended up with one really shiny shoe.

Once the material settles for about 5 minutes, the instructions say to come back with a propane torch and lightly heat the little air bubbles so that they pop. That process works too, but i think a hair dryer or heat gun would have been a little safer. I kept the flame far enough away from the table, but while holding the propane torch out to the side while I leaned in close to catch sight of the air bubbles in the gloss I almost set fire to my work bench.

Family things have kept me from getting much done to the boat. I expected to be launched by now, but I still have some waxing and bottom painting to do before that can happen. The boat yard is also supposed to align my prop shafts too before the launch and because they let one of their mechanics go over the winter they are a little backed up. Looks like launch is delayed until the end of the month which doesn't make me too happy.

did you fill that bar top stuff level with the top of the trim? glad to hear it was easy to use, cant wait for the pics.

BSnB, I had to do as you said. I heated my basement to 75 but it still was very thick. I used a plastic spreader and just pulled product to the edges. I had a lip so I had it easier than it sounds like you did. The stuff does look awesome when wet and bubble/debris free huh?

Good to hear some progress taking place. I use others work as inspiration to plug along on the 34.
