That repair is no big deal, just extra work. Just from now on set that blade to the exact depth of the wood.

I know rookie move......The odd thing is that the cut was okay for the whole length (forward to aft) it was little ridge that didn't look right. The fiberglass was pulled apart to look like a spider web more than a deck.

The previous owner used duck tape to seal in the fuel tank, will it work on the hull????

Awesome progress SB89, looking good, and if it makes you feel any better, I didn't cut thru my hull once...Nooooo...

I cut through it about a dozen times while slicing and dicing the stringers out...

Like the others said, No big Deal, prolly be one of the easiest repairs you do on this resto...

And definitely get a respirator, not just the dust, but the fumes are not so good...

Also, I don't remember if anyone mentioned it before or not, but worth repeating anyways...

Before you gear up in full battle rattle, cover as much of your skin as possible with a healthy coating of baby powder...helps cut down on the after itch, and I think there is something called "cetaphil" available at your local pharmacy, that supposed to help if you already got the itch...

I been keeping an eye on your thread, looks like you are getting the demo done quick.

Love the silver "ouch" band-aid you put on.

Like Wood and GT say, don't let it get to you. We all have done it. Repaired it won't even be visible.

I second/third what WoG and GT says as far as the respirator. Once you start grinding, you HAVE to have one. When grinding, I wore a full hooded tyvek suit, respirator, goggles and gloves and all powdered up. I never got the itch once. That is until I went in uncovered after the grinding and had "cleaned up", thinking things were clean....then I got dust everywhere.

Also, make sure you have something to contain the dust while you are grinding. Don't just let it blow all over. keep it in the boat until you can get it vacuumed out.

If you get the glass in your hands, I find the best way to get rid of it is lay a piece of duct tape over the affected area, press lightly, then pull away from your skin slowly. Doesn't work so good on the back of your arms though....will rip all the hair out.

Looking forward to your progress.

I didn't know about the baby power. I did pick up a respirator 3M for dust & fumes. Will get the white suit tomorrow. Thanks for the help. I do appreciate it.

I appreciate you admitting that. Makes me feel a little better knowing not that uncommon & an easy fix and now that I got a beer and a little NASCAR I'm good.

Couple of quick questions??? Since I've got everything out of the boat the side panels need to be redone. What type of ply should I use and should it have a layer of resin on it? Also, I have a few little holes which need filling since they were used to hold side panels up but after someone over drilled they no longer work. What will I need to fill these holes? I'm trying to buy stuff as I go so it isn't a huge hit to the wallet (whom I kidding, I'm married I have no money in my wallet) at once. Thanks!

I don't care about color matching since the holes will be covered by the side panels.

You can fill those with "Hairy Peanut Butter" of your own making (Lot's cheaper than buying it), or... You can buy some of this. Since it's above water and wont be getting that wet or seen...

Wood,

Thank you. I've got all the makings for P-Nut Butter so I'll do that rather than spend more money I don't have. What about they ply? Can I just use exterior ply with a coat of resin over the top since these panels shouldn't get that wet or is there something better? Thanks again for all the help.

Yeah, 1/2" or 3/8" Arauco ply would be my choice. However resin without CSM is no good. You need the mat to keep the resin from cracking. If it were me, I'd buy a gallon of Epoxy. I keep this on hand in my wood shop for all exterior projects. Since you won't be using Poly on it then no worries about adhesion and it does not require mat. If you go with the poly then you gotta use the CSM. OR you could just use some Ext. Grade Polyurethane or Oil base paint. It would make the wood last a lot longer than if it was left bare. Especially the edges. That's where the moisture gets in the most.

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

Wood,

Thanks for the info. I'll need to get your personal info once this is all done to send you a thank you.

Today was a good day for pulling out foam. This past weekend was hot as hell but a freak storm came through last night and cooled everything down. We even had a snow flurry in CA. I only live 45 minutes north of San Diego and we aren't very high (1000 ft above sea level).

I've got both the port and stbd side done BUT found more rot aft than I expected so it looks like the battery box and stbd side seat (originally was an ice chest) must come out. The core samples are still good for the motor mounts and transom so I'm not touching those. However, feeling how soft the deck is that held the fuel tank and seeing that there is little wood left on the stbd stinger close to the tank I'm just going to pull that up. Better to be safe than sorry.

I've posted a lot of pictures of my photo bucket so I'll attach the link but here are a couple of just today. I'm posting one that if anyone can tell me what this hole is for I'd appreciate it. Its closest to the battery box and from talking to the mechanic that worked on the motor, who used to build sea rays in the 80s he said this isn't original and he didn't know what it was.

So next,

1. finish pulling out the deck and foam aft
2. measure, think out pulling out stringers, measure again, continue to think about pulling out the stringers, measure one more time and then get the nerve up to pull the stringers out.
3. grind - I've got a 4 1/2 angle grinder and a belt sander - what grit sand paper should I use for both????
4. start thinking about putting it all back together.......
5. do a few feel good projects like the side panels, antenna, etc

IMG_03662.jpg

What is the hole for???
IMG_0364.jpg

Starboard side done today
IMG_0363.jpg

Area still left to cut out - What is the best way of cutting out the battery box??? It is open in the rear. The ice chest is a closed box so I'm going to make that and then put it in once the deck is starting to go back in.

This is the area of the hull that I cut. Notice that it doesn't appear to have any deck under it. That is why it was so easy to cut through. Not sure how that happened (no deck I mean. I know how I cut through it......)

Hi SB89,

That hole looks like it may have been made to pour liquid expanding foam into...MAYBE!?

Where did you take the core samples from the motor mounts and transom?

Keep on getting your courage up...once you tear it out, you will have turned the corner to start some reassembly...

Little side projects are excellent motivators, they will keep you inspired to do the big jobs, and when the time comes, it will be that much less that's left to do.

Good progress...

I did it a couple of ways. I drilled directly into the base of the motor mount and transom looking for nice looking wood shavings and then in the case of the area closest to the transom and motor mounts which I'll now see since I'm pulling that area up, I drilled with a paddle bit and took a piece of PVC running through foam which was dry.

Thanks for the worlds of encouragement on the small projects. I agree that make you feel like your accomplishing something while the big job is going on plus I can't bring the boat over everyday or my homeowners association would have a fit. Don't want the neighbors complaining just yet, I have a ton of grinding to do......:p

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

Today I did a little video work rather than just pictures. I know that we all have those days when we are doing this and we must push through and look at the end product but today was one of those days. It seemed like I was chasing my tail and that nothing was working until the end of the day.

The good news is I started cutting stringers out. The bad news is it looks like I'll need to do the aft end but I can't right now. I just don't have the cash. I've invested way more than I should have in the trailer and getting the outdrive and motor up to par so pulling everything off and tearing it down would just kill me. So, I'll get through this season (I know......) and then I'll pull the motor and tear out the rest this winter. I'm going to seal the crap out of the area that I'm working. Right now there isn't any water in the aft end, it just doesn't look as good as I hoped.

Speaking of water, I pulled up the deck area that housed the fuel tank and found my new swimming pool. I've got this on video. There was 15 gallons (yes 15) of water that a vacuumed out. I'll pull the rest of the deck tomorrow so it can begin to dry out and then by Sunday I should start grinding.

So, here is the video. Again, I know that I shouldn't wait but I just don't have the money. There is too much going on with 4 busy kids (my daughter is training to be on the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and that cost $7 - $10K a year) plus I have two other teenagers who are doing sports and an active 7 year old. Needless to say on a retired soldiers income that takes a chunk out. But, I'll get it next year and it will all be done right!

Just a quick tip - when cutting stringer wood with the circular saw in areas close to the glass, set the blade depth where it just doesn't quite cut through and then use a utility knife to finish the cut. In some areas you may have to pry the cut open to get the razor in, or trim back a bit of the wood.

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

Today was a much better day! I got all the stringers out, sealed the cuddy and motor with plastic and am now ready to start grinding. It looks like there is woven roven down now. How far or how much should I grind? I know from Frisco's thread, he grinded down to "good" glass but how will I know when that is?

As far as the cut hull goes. When I grind down to the fresh or good glass will I need to do anything else to repair the cut? I know from watching youtube that you make several, increasing in size, overlapping patches but since I'm grinding down all the way around will this be necessary?

I also cut the wood for the side panels which I sealed with epoxy. I'll be taking those to the same guy who did the cushions in the cuddy.

Thanks to all that have helped. I appreciate it!

I think you'll be able to tell when you get to good glass. Color is different. For the Hull cut just put some tape over the outside, fill the cut with PB then lay 2 layers of Csm and a Layer of 1708 progressively lareger and you're good to go.

Thanks Wood! Then as far as the gel coat on the exterior do I just sand around the area and apply gel coat or do I just fill the cut with gel coat over the PB?

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

Okay, dumb question time.......

1. Is a belt sander okay for sanding down the old fiberglass or do I just stick with my angle grinder with 36 grit and DA with 40 grit?

2. After I repair the cut in my hull on the inside with CSM and 1708 what do I do for the outside. It's going to have PB and then the CSM and 1708 as wood described but on the outside do I just use a generic gel coat repair kit?
