No belt sander.... angle grinder 36 grit flapper disk ;) I find the grinder with a diamond blade works wonders on cutting glass. Your doing a fine job! Welcome to the fun :D I have a bunch of info in my resto thread from my first rebuild.

I wouldn't worry about the gel coat just yet..... plenty to do before ya break out the gel ;)

I used a 7" grinder and the 4 1/2" grinder with the 24 gritt. It makes for fast work on the 7" grinder.
Be careful when using it. Can go thru the hull.

I was looking at a 7" grinder at Home Depot today but thought that it might work so well that I would grind through the hull. Don't need more than the one hole I already put through it:facepalm:. Thanks for the help.

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

Ahhhhh, the demo is almost over........ For the last 3 days, I have been grinding, vacuuming, grinding and vacuuming some more..... Today, it is done!!!!! Thanks to GT1 for the info on baby power. NO ITCH for ME!!!

So, next comes planning out the stringers and bulkheads, buying all the goodies and putting them in. Unfortunately, this won't be for 2 weeks. The VA is giving me a service dog. I know it probably doesn't look like I need one but with the injuries that I have I do. I'm just sorry they didn't teach the dog how to grind fiberglass or I would have waited a week. So, I'll be off the radar until the first of the month and then it will game on. I'm getting this done before Memorial Day!

Question.....Although, I won't be able to do any big jobs for a couple of weeks I do have a couple of small things that I can get done in the evening. I wanted to sand and paint the gas tank. This is okay to do? I'm not going to use a power sander and I've already expressed all the gasses out but filling the tank with water and then drained it so I don't think I'll go boom! Just don't know if this is usually done????

Here are a couple of pics. Thanks again to all that have given me great advise.

End of grinding day #1 Love the 7' angle grinder. Saved me a ton of time and I didn't even sand through my hull!

When we were in Iraq, it was called the SUCK. When you arrived in country you would be welcomed by someone saying "Welcome to the SUCK. Embrace the SUCK." Well after today NO MORE SUCK!!!! I hope this is the worst part of restorations.......

Hey, the 2 boxes on either side of the motor and the sides of the step down into the cabin aren't coming out? Other then that, 2nd best grind & wash down of the year. But I think Bear still has you beat... The grinding looks really good! Well done!

Congrats on the pending addition to the family. Thank you for your service & sorry to hear you earned the service dog. I know they've recently changed how they match service dogs w/ servicemen so I hope you've got a great one coming. And that they turn out to be a real water & boat dog!

BTW, we are getting ready to partner w/ at least 1 VA maybe 2 in WV & working to place wounded servicemen back to work in the public sector. Looking forward to helping work that out. I can't remember the name of the program, the VA loves the little 2 or 3 letter acronyms, but it has recently been drastically modified to make significant improvements.

JB

Thank you:D Not bad for a newb? The boxes will come out when I do the transom & motor mounts at the end of the season. Was concerned too close to the motor to try & cut out. My luck I would have cut something on the motor which shouldn't be cut:facepalm: The step down & sides are all good wood so I'm going to cut the cap off and connect new stringer to the old (not sure of the term).

What group do you belong to that is partnering with the VA? It's great when Vets are hooked up. I was recalled in 04 and wounded in 05. Lost my career as a nurse since I couldn't take care of patients anymore. Once my kids are grown might go back to school as a nurse practitioner but for now it's great being a soccer dad.

The dog will be a treat. Many days, especially after kneeling grinding a deck, it's difficult to move or pick things up. Dog will help with that.

Thanks again & any advise you have is most welcomed. I'm totally new to this stuff but I'm having fun learning.

SB I take it your fuel tank is aluminum..... no paint is needed. You can clean it up( i use EZ-OFF oven cleaner and a plastic brush) and look for any deep pit marks that may become leaks later..... Big debate on how to fill pits on a tank. Anywho just clean it up and see what you have. The tank needs to be set on plastic strips off the sole deck under the tank. The biggest killer of fuel tanks is water trapped between the tank and some other material.... This will cause corrosion, pitting and holes.

Here is a good read about fuel tanks... http://www.yachtsurvey.com/fueltank.htm

Real nice job on the clean up! You will have a bit more grinding tho..... All along the gunnels to glass the new deck in ;)

It's been lurking back there, I just couldn't bring this thought forward enough until now:

It sounds like you may be putting this back in service for the summer, then rebuilding the transom & motor mounts after. I'm not an I/O guy, but it isn't clear to me how you'll tie the new stringers you need to re-deck the area you've ground, into the back of the boat & or motor mounts. Back in early March you mentioned that the mounts & transom looked/felt sound. I'd spend a bunch of time taking core samples w/ a drill bit & checking to ensure that the shavings are coming out dry & light brown. Wet & dark brown are a problem, and would be tough to tie into now & redo later. It's more work, and money, if it's sound & dry to put the deck back & fix the rest later, but could be done.

Sorry it took awhile to get that worked out to the frontal lobe......

Thanks for the info on the EZ-Off. Tank cleaned up nice. I didn't notice any "deep" pit marks. It looked like there were a few small round size pit marks and I'm no expert so I'm posting pictures to see what everyone thinks. The other larger areas "appear" to be just chipped away paint, but again I'm no expert.

Don't bum me out about the grinding....lol. I'm on a high right now that the big stuff is done The area along the gunnels will get done one the stringers are measured. That part easy.....7" angle grinder running along the edge BAM! OUT! Its the rest of it that sucked

Thanks again for the info and let me know what you think about the tank....

This is the area where I saw the small pits but not sure if it will be problem???

They are and I did. The video was taken when I was having one of those days and was contemplating worst case scenario. I would only consider redoing that area if I had to take the motor out since I would have the room. The stringers would be tied in with the the stuff I'm putting in now. There is only 2 feet aft of where I'm working and those particular stingers don't connect to the transom. It is just off the bulkhead that is the aft section of the box. Again, this was worst case if I had to pull the motor. I appreciate you thoughts on it since this is my first rebuild and I don't know JACK!

Looks like someone already painted that tank.... When I did my tank I cleaned all of the galvic corriosion off and took a pick tool and probed the pit marks to see if any went into the tank. On the bad spots I used a brass wire wheel to clean it up. If you have any holes that will need to be addressed.... Got anyone around that does aluminum welding?

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

I'm looking over my notes and pictures so I can plan how I want the new stringers and bulkheads in. The outboard stringers ran about mid boat (they stopped just underneath the seat boxes). Can I run them to the foot step and connect them a bulkhead that I plan on putting directly in front of the foot step to seal off the old foam and the foam that I'm pouring?

I don't think  it would take away from the flexibility of the hull since the stringer just on the other side of the cuddy wall and the stringer that I'm replacing wouldn't allow for any flex. It only that 3 1/2 feet that there isn't a stringer??? The hull still could be pushed in on since it will be off the deck.

Here are a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about.

IMG_0303-1.jpg

This is the original set up. The stringer stops right about mid seat box
IMG_0404-1.jpg

This is how I want it to look???

My stringers ran the way your thinking of doing yours..... I don't see a problem. oops or wood on glass would be the men to get the ok from ;)

Thanks Rick....That's what I thought. I think the PO redid the deck (of course when I ask they "NO, we didn't do anything.....). Think they took a short cut and didn't run the stringer in all the way only redoing the aft portion of the deck.

I don't see why you couldn't. I ran a bulkhead between the outer stringer and the inner. It really stiffened up the hull.

Re: Where Do I Begin? - 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

Well after two weeks of service dog training, I'm back! I got my service dog last Friday so we've been working together for a little over a week. We had a week of classroom training for the first week which is also when we were introduced to our dogs. We couldn't take them home until last Friday. He's a very cool black lab named Ernie.

df9365aa.jpg

But, now it's back to business. I was able to buy a bunch of supplies on one of the training days that we got out early so I'd be ready to rock-n-roll once I was done. This weekend I was able to get all the wood cut for the bulkheads and stringers, grinded the last little bit which included most of the deck lip (I left a little so I can make sure I've got the right deck height) and gave it a good washout. Tomorrow I'm hoping to PL in the stringers and bulkheads letting it dry for 48 hours and then I'll be ready with the PB. Once that dries it will be time to lay 1708 down, cap the stringers, put back in the fuel tank and then God willing put down the deck!

I've pushed up my splash date since my family will be staying at the beach for a soccer tournament and there is a marina adjacent to our hotel which we can slip the boat for the weekend. My new splash date is May 5th! If I can get the deck down, gel coated and then the seats in I'll be happy. Putting in the radio, sounder, detailing etc can be done once I get back home but it would be nice to run around the marina in between games.
