You are really flying now. It's amazing what a few warm days will do for your motivation! I plan on foaming my hull tonight since it's going to be above 80. Keep up the good work.

Re: 1989 Ski Brendella (boat restoration progress)

Thank you! The feedback makes me feel good. I think I put in about 23 hours of work between Thursday and Tuesday!

Now I have a question.
I'm struggling with the carpet/gel coat dilemma for the floor.
Leaning toward gel coat, but the gel coat costs ~$30 a quart.
Has anyone ever used garage floor coating?

Hilton, looks like you are getting the hang of this stuff! You need to come down here and take a week or two off! I am anxious to hear about the floor covering.

Keep up the great work!

No Go on the Garage Paint. Its NOT UV protected and will not hold up. You can use Rustoleum Pro Oil Paint and add a bit of sand to the mix to give you a bit of a non skid surface. 2-3 coats of that and with proper maintenance she'll last a lot of years. Couple of Gallons should do the trick

On the back of the can it says that additional coats can be applied after it fully dries, usually in 24 hours.
My plan is to sand again, paying close attention to the seams where the glass overlaps. Then vacuum, then rinse with the hose, then vacuum again and put the fan blowing to dry out the interior completely. Finally, wash with acetone.
I'll do the first coat, then let it dry ~ 24 hours, at least a second coat, maybe a third after 48 hours.
All of this is "weather permitting." Looks like rain.

Yep, Heres a tip, Mix 2 quarts at a time and thin with 1/2 cup of MS and 1/2 cup of Acetone. It will make the paint flow and level like glass and dry a bit faster as well. The antiskid is basically fine sand. You can save some money and use playground sand and some screen material to sift out the big stuff and get the same results. I used a coffee can with hole punched in the plastic lid and sprinkled it over the wet paint, let it dry, lightly brushed it off and vacuumed then rolled on the next coat and repeated the sand. Final coat with no sand. Turned out great. In the summer with temps in the 90's I put on one coat in the morning an the second coat that evening. Painted in the shade then set the boat in the sun to dry.

I don't know what "MS" is.
Microsoft? Masters of Science? Multiple sclerosis? Mass suicide? Mississippi? Meters per second?

Seriously, is that some type of hardener?

Hilton, did you notice if they can add shade to the paint? I really like the idea of no carpet...but would need to match the hull color.

Let me know how it goes!

I couldn't find it locally, and had to order it online. It won't be here until Tuesday. I ordered two cans.

Once it gets here I'll mix up:
2 quarts paint
1/2 cup of mineral spirits
1/2 cup of Acetone
1/2 container of the anti skid
"some" hardener (how much?)

After I mix it I'm supposed to "let it cook" for ~30 minutes, stirring every 10?

Looking at the link in your signature I see primer mentioned. Do I need to also prime before I put this complicated mixture down?

Re: 1989 Ski Brendella (boat restoration progress)

Yup, Primer is important. Use this...Rust-Oleum 7780504 Stops Rust, 32 oz. Quart, Flat White Clean Metal Primer - Amazon.com

No hardener in the primer. Mixing instructions are in my link. for 2 quarts you'll use 1/2 a can of hardener but only in the paint NOT the primer. One coat of primer should be sufficient. Make sure to wipe the deck down well with Acetone before applying the primer. Prep is the key to any good Paint job and whether or not it will adhere properly and last a long time.

What a handsome looking fella! Starting to really dig this look.

In addition to the grinder I plan on using these to smooth the flat surfaces.

Making sure that the front and rear center pieces will still fit (credit for the idea goes to BoatSlayer)

Getting smooth!

One of the perks of being a rock star

Getting prepared to prime after dark.

To be continued due to the *(dumb) picture limit.

Re: 1989 Ski Brendella (boat restoration progress)

I vacuumed, washed, vacuumed, dried with a fan, then washed with acetone once the surfaces were dry.

Then I primed the floor. Here are some terrible nighttime pictures.

Tomorrow I plan to skip Sunday School and prime the rest of the interior. Probably put a second coat on areas I deem important.

Looks awesome! Don't skip Sunday School, don't need the bad mojo. You have plenty of time to not be in a hurry and do it right!

Re: 1989 Ski Brendella (boat restoration progress)

I don't have plenty of time! The hardener won't be here until Tuesday, that's the only reason I'm not painting tomorrow afternoon!

The river is calling me!

I still haven't touched the engine by the way. I've got a nice pile of parts though.

I'm all primed up! Literally and figuratively! Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone!

I'm not 100% certain what I've been celebrating other than another beautiful day to tinker on the boat.

This was the worst part.

I kept smearing blood everywhere and having to go back and prime over it.
