I picked up a used 18' Tracker Bass Buggy with a 60HP Johnson Pro Series the other day for next to nothing. Boats in decent shape but motor has no fire at all. According to the previous owner he thought the stator was bad so I checked the stator and it does have some cracking going on with the shell. It is also the wrong part number. The part number of the stator on the boat is 584560 which is for a 92-2001 motor. Upon seeing this I also checked the power pack which is also the wrong part number. The power pack part number is 584808 which is supposed to be for a 93-2001 motor.

The correct part numbers for my boats stator and power pack are 583779 and 583748 respectively.

I say all this to ask if having the wrong part numbers on the motor can cause any ill effects and also if the stator having surface cracks could cause the lack of spark. Is there any thing else I should try to trouble shoot the no sparking issue? I know everyone always says to disconnect the black/yellow wire but I can't find anywhere to disconnect the black/yellow wire on this motor and also the boat doesn't appear to have been equipped with a kill switch.

I forgot to mention that the model # for my boat is TJ60TLESM. Also when I look up the part number for the power pack that is supposed to fit my boat it doesn't look anything like the one that is on it. It doesn't look like the power pack that is supposed to fit my motor would mount with the way the bolt holes are lined out.

I check the serial on the transom bracket and it matches the serial on the freeze plug in the power head so I'm pretty sure that it's a 1990 motor.

Looking even more closely it appears that my motor has the electrical bracket from a 93+ motor which is why the power pack that fits my year of motor wouldn't mount up. Can anybody shed some more light on this? Do i need to swap everything back to 1990 stuff or will the correct stator for my motor work with the wrong power pack, etc.?

Okay. I'm really confused now. The timer base and rectifier on my motor are also from a 1993 motor. Why the hell does my motor have a 1990 model number but have all the parts off a 1993 or newer motor?

Maybe someone took a 1993 ignition set to your motor in order to have regulated battery charging...

Ok I will get some pics and more part numbers this evening. What really stinks is I ha already ordered a new stator based off the previous owners comments and the model number of the boat. I'm pretty sure that was a total waste of money now.

i'm not able to answer your question directly, but the power packs have different specs 90' 4 wire, 6700 limiter and slow mod,, 93' 5 wire, 6700 limiter, slow mod and quick start , maybe an upgrade?

The quickstart powerpack needs the quickstart timer base and the spring-loaded timing linkage to work. Photos required.

Previously I was taking the prior owner at his word that the motor had no spark. Today I tried to crank the motor over to check spark for myself and the motor would not even attempt to crank. The solenoid doesn't pickup nor does the starter spin. I tried to manually jump the starter out and it still wouldn't spin which I found odd since even a starter in really bad disrepair will usually try to do something. I checked the feed from my battery down at the motor and I'm getting 12.39 volts. The other thing that I found really odd is that after trying to start the motor the tilt/trim doesn't work. I'm assuming I have a bad connection but I'm still confused as to why the starter won't spin when jumped out manually.

At any rate, I took some photos of all the mystery 93+ electrical components today. I really hope someone on here with more experience can shed some life on what sort of basket case I have purchased.

a lot of 93" parts, maybe just go with its a 93' , and start trouble shooting, for the starter there is a fuse close to the start solenoid to check, and yes odd there's nothing when directly jumped

Yeah, I checked the 20a fuse first and it's good. How do I check the stator, power pack, etc. to see if they are good?

suggest you start with a factory service manual, order one or they can be downloaded online

I would get the starter working, then check the compression . Compression OK, check the voltage on the 2 brown wires from the stator. The stator has a crake in the insulation , stator probley. bad.

Free factory service manuals at www boatinfo.no/lib/library.html click your make find your motor, find your ignition. Next

I would go to cdielectronics.com They are the king of all ignition parts, for example when you find your coil, scroll down, there is trouble shooting and how to test every ignition part below the part your looking at. Never buy ignition parts on e-bay especially coils,I've heard that a lot.

You know how to test,i don't, go to CDI and keep on testing until you figure it out, Cracks in stator plastic means replace it, make sure you get the correct stator.

Tell us what problem was ,so I can learn something.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I got the starter working today. Have some bad connections in the electrical system. I'm going to go through the system tomorrow and clean every connection thoroughly then check compression.

I agree about the stator though. With the case cracked I'm pretty sure I need a new one I just don't know which one to buy. Somebody "upgraded" this motor to '93 parts so I don't know if I should go back to the correct stator or get another '93 stator

stator and power pack are matched now because of the 5 wire plug, the 90 was a 4 wire

Okay good catch Juno. I'll check the stator tomorrow to see what it's output looks like and go from there

Ok got spark to the motor and fixed all the other electrical demons by cleaning up the electrical connections from the battery. I guess a little preventative maintenance goes a long way sometimes. Thanks for all the help and I hope this thread will help someone in the future.
