Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore
This is System Fs friend. My Monterey is a 18 foot 94 model.I have the floor panel like you so keep the pics and info comming. In case I need to do the same. What you have done looks good.I was surprised to learn of the shabby build job they did.Monterey seemed to be tops.Only problem I have had is loose nuts under dash and on some fittings.I have had it 5 years and bought it from the first owner who took super good care of it.Had only about 40 hours on it.
ahh very cool...glad to see you join up! Lots of really good people around here, and you have some great help with System-F.
To be honest, I would have to talk to Monterey to be sure, but after I tore into the boat and got a good look at how it was put together, I just can't see how they put too much stock the amount of strength the stringers were going to provide. I see many boats around here with sometimes 4 stringers running bow to stern,(ours, at least mine, had only 2) maybe the way they engineered the boat, they were counting on the fiberglass layup, and the hull construction for strength..I don't know. Mine had only a few ribs(side supports) as well. I added 2 more on each side. Should be good and strong now.
What I found was that only only one side of the stringer had fiberglass bonded to it which was then bonded to the hull. It was Roven Woving which in turn created the shell for the Fuel Tank to sit in, and it only went about 3/4 of the way up the stringer, then they just painted the rest. Obviously WR is some really strong stuff, But there was no glass that attached to the other side of the stringer, and then tabbed(bonded) to the hull. They had to have known that wasn't going to be very strong, and it wasn't going to be long before it rotted, if subjected to a wet environment.
Beyond the fuel tank toward the bow, the Woven Roving ended up forming the ski locker, all the way up to the bow, but that would seems to be ok.
Yesterday, I finished all of the contruction and glass layup for the new stringers and and ribs..Everything is bedded to the hull with A poly resin putty I mixed up, then I tabbed and covered it all with CSM. My fiberglass work isn't the greatest..and I should have rounded off the corners of the wood first and it would have layed down better, like BobGlasstream mentioned. But it turned out ok.
I am now ready to start the fit in the new deck, which I'm really happy about!

However, today I got a wild hair and decided to totally degrease and clean out my bildge, and put a couple coats of Rust-o-Leum Oil based paint...not very fun with the engine in the boat, but I got it done. With the deck in the boat, its would be nearly impossible to do, so I decided to do it now.
I put down a few coats of Rust-o-Leum Primer first and will lay down the paint tomorrow or the next day...I'll be doing the same in the ski locker. Its going to look much much better than before.
Here are some pics of the bilge(primer coat) and the finished stringers and ribs.
