Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

This is System Fs friend. My Monterey is a 18 foot 94 model.I have the floor panel like you so keep the pics and info comming. In case I need to do the same. What you have done looks good.I was surprised to learn of the shabby build job they did.Monterey seemed to be tops.Only problem I have had is loose nuts under dash and on some fittings.I have had it 5 years and bought it from the first owner who took super good care of it.Had only about 40 hours on it.

ahh very cool...glad to see you join up! Lots of really good people around here, and you have some great help with System-F.

To be honest, I would have to talk to Monterey to be sure, but after I tore into the boat and got a good look at how it was put together, I just can't see how they put too much stock the amount of strength the stringers were going to provide. I see many boats around here with sometimes 4 stringers running bow to stern,(ours, at least mine, had only 2) maybe the way they engineered the boat, they were counting on the fiberglass layup, and the hull construction for strength..I don't know. Mine had only a few ribs(side supports) as well. I added 2 more on each side. Should be good and strong now.

What I found was that only only one side of the stringer had fiberglass bonded to it which was then bonded to the hull. It was Roven Woving which in turn created the shell for the Fuel Tank to sit in, and it only went about 3/4 of the way up the stringer, then they just painted the rest. Obviously WR is some really strong stuff, But there was no glass that attached to the other side of the stringer, and then tabbed(bonded) to the hull. They had to have known that wasn't going to be very strong, and it wasn't going to be long before it rotted, if subjected to a wet environment.

Beyond the fuel tank toward the bow, the Woven Roving ended up forming the ski locker, all the way up to the bow, but that would seems to be ok.

Yesterday, I finished all of the contruction and glass layup for the new stringers and and ribs..Everything is bedded to the hull with A poly resin putty I mixed up, then I tabbed and covered it all with CSM. My fiberglass work isn't the greatest..and I should have rounded off the corners of the wood first and it would have layed down better, like BobGlasstream mentioned. But it turned out ok.

I am now ready to start the fit in the new deck, which I'm really happy about!:D
However, today I got a wild hair and decided to totally degrease and clean out my bildge, and put a couple coats of Rust-o-Leum Oil based paint...not very fun with the engine in the boat, but I got it done. With the deck in the boat, its would be nearly impossible to do, so I decided to do it now.

I put down a few coats of Rust-o-Leum Primer first and will lay down the paint tomorrow or the next day...I'll be doing the same in the ski locker. Its going to look much much better than before.

Here are some pics of the bilge(primer coat) and the finished stringers and ribs.

Hey MTribe, glad to see you got a thread going...looking good!
I think we already talked about this, but just in case...those side supports are similar to a bulkhead, be sure there is a way for drainage thru them to the bilge{can't really tell from the foto's if they're there or not}...keep up the good work, that glass work looks great!

Hey Kenny!
hahahah...its the 10 ft glass job...looks good from far but far from good;):D Naa..I'm sure I could have done alot worse, I think it turned out ok...I do know it will be much better constructed than before.

Yea, we did talk about about the side supports and creating drainage...I will get some good pictures of the holes I put down in th corners to allow water to drain into the gas tank area, then on to the bilge.

Wanted to give a little update...I finished up the bilge, 2 nice coats of Rust-o-leum oil based, and it looks great now!
I have all of the deck boards cut and fit and am in the final stages of getting all of the bottom's glassed and ready to be set in place. Here are a few pictures of the progress.

Finished Bilge..Will tidy up the paint when the deck is glassed in place.

One of the deck boards be fit into place.

Here is the center board that covers the fuel tank, fit and trimmed to take the ski locker door.

This is the bottom of the center board. Might be overkill, but I had some extra 2x2 that I will glass into place for extra support. The center will house the deck lid for the fuel level sending unit.

Should have the deck installed and ready for glass within the next few days.:D

I think you are REALLY going to like that setup. I'm not sure of the differences between yours and mine, but the power train is the same. It should do great with your boat. Im at about 4k with the trailer.

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Made some more progress today. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, 95% of the foam I took out of the boat was bone dry. I was able to salvage most of it, when I took it out, so I could put it back in. I had to do some trimming and fitting when putting it back in, since I added another side support on both sides, and I also wanted a channel at the base of the stringers to allow water to drain into the bilge if any found its way to the outside of the fuel tank.

Here are a few final pictures of the deck support and stringers before everything is PL'd and screwed down.

David,

The bilge area looks great! How long did it take and how big a pain was it to paint the bilge with the engine in the boat? Can you provide the specifics on the bilge paint used?

Great work and the finish line is in sight!

MTribe08,
Looks pretty good. One suggestion I have is the areas of the foam you trimmed should be sealed with something like paint. If it does get water on it it will absorb some. The natural foam will form a skin when poured, that skin helps to prevent it from absorbing water and then when you trimmed it you removed that skin. I would seal it with something.
This is just my opinion of course. (Based on Fact)

Thanks Ben..I'm really pleased with how well it turned out. I don't think I could have pulled it off, if the deck had been in place. I was able to sit in the fuel tank compartment and do the work.

My bildge had a lot of built up crap in it..I took a 4.5" grinder with a flap disk and went to work. There was some tough angles no doubt..but I used that and then some Simple green with a brush and got most of it out..and then used Acetone to clean the surface.

I put down 2 layers of Rustoleum primer with a 6 inch foam roller, and brush. Then I put 2 layers of the Rustoleum oil based Paint the next day.

The hardest part was reaching way in the back...I found a hollow/metal broomstick handle and fit the handle of the brush in it to make an extensition to reach the back wall and corners.

The only thing I couldn't do was go up very high on the transom wall..so I tried to make a uniform cut-in just above the drain hole and called it good..It certainly looks much better than before...

I'm going to the same thing to the ski locker, with the same procedure.

Bob, I totally had plans on doing that, and I just flat forgot. the one thing I have going for me, is that the foam is not totally snug in those compartments..if water does get under there, it can make its way to the base of the stringers and out of the holes without touching the foam. I left about a 3 inch gap at the base of the stringers.

However, if you are doing this project and putting foam back in..would be wise to paint it anyway.

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Wanted to give just a little update...I TOTALLLLLLLY Scored today!! All along with this project I really wanted to replace the back to back seating at the helm for a nice captains chair with a bolster seat.

The problem is that are so darn expensive...I don't care if you buy it new or on Ebay..they are a couple hundred dollars all day long. So, I was kind of reserving to the fact that I'd probable have to put my original seats back in and try and make a bolster of some kind.

Well on a whim I called this Monterey dealer on the other side of town and asked if they ever have used captains seats from a project boat, or salvage boat or whatever. He said as a matter of fact I think we have one right now...and its an OEM Monterey seat. Then I asked him how much he wanted for it.....$45 bucks!!!! I said, I'll be there in the morning, hold it for me. So, I picked it up today...not a rip or tear anywhere and it has the mounting bracket with forward and back adjustments....I'm totally stoked! So, now I want to make a box I can mount the pedestal to, rather then bolting through the deck...Got any ideas!!!

Wow that is a hell of a steel. If you do come accross a pair of bucket seats I dont even care about the upholstery because I would have to recover them to match my boat anyway.(I am doing purple and yellow interior) Nice job on the boat so far.

Dude!

Total score on the seat! If you want to change the red to match the rest of your interior, vinyl die is a great solution. Or red could be a cool color addition o the rest of the interior scheme!

Great talking with you today! Looking forward to your progress!
Awesome work dude!

Rock on my friend!

You know whats funny..right when we hung up the phone I was like $%#&, I wanted to ask him about color matching the red with the Maroon that is the original scheme in the boat.

The red is pretty close, its probably about as good as I could have done, aside from finding a captains chair that came of my exact boat and color interior. However, I think its going to bug me..we'll see. Where can I find this vinyl die?

Hey..if you can strum up that thread where that guy built a wood pedestal for his captains chair..shoot me the link.
