Since you already have most of the floor up, why not go with a factory look and reinforce the floor from underneath to support a pedestal mount. I think you will be much happier with the look versus a platform or box. Looks like you might be able to get to the underside of the floor via the ski locker. I would also look closely at the deck where you want to mount the seat. Some manufacturers reinforce this area by default since they are not sure if the boat will end up with a pedestal or back to back seat. All you really need to do is slide a 3/4" sheet of PT plywood with some glue of some sort on it, in the general area were the base will mount up. Then run some screws through the floor area to hold it in place, just seal it up well.

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Wanted to give just a little update...I TOTALLLLLLLY Scored today!! All along with this project I really wanted to replace the back to back seating at the helm for a nice captains chair with a bolster seat.

The problem is that are so darn expensive...I don't care if you buy it new or on Ebay..they are a couple hundred dollars all day long. So, I was kind of reserving to the fact that I'd probable have to put my original seats back in and try and make a bolster of some kind.

Well on a whim I called this Monterey dealer on the other side of town and asked if they ever have used captains seats from a project boat, or salvage boat or whatever. He said as a matter of fact I think we have one right now...and its an OEM Monterey seat. Then I asked him how much he wanted for it.....$45 bucks!!!! I said, I'll be there in the morning, hold it for me. So, I picked it up today...not a rip or tear anywhere and it has the mounting bracket with forward and back adjustments....I'm totally stoked! So, now I want to make a box I can mount the pedestal to, rather then bolting through the deck...Got any ideas!!!

Have you already put the floor in? You could glass an aluminum plate to the underside, drill and top for bolts. Much less chance of the bolts pulling loose and leaking as screws would. If the floor is down and you have access, but I'll assume you don't past the stringer, use some bondo and set the aluminum into place. just make shure you rough up one side with the grinder. Aluminum is a much better backing than ply as it will not compress.

I agree with using the SEM vinyl dye. Since you got such a steal on the seat, bring in one of your other boat cushions to an SEM dealer and get them to color match a pint for you. I paid $25 per color for the matching service, but all my cusions are factory exact. A pint runs about $35, and is enough to do all your cusions. Either use a $5 preval spray from HD or a low pressure HVLP gun - will turn out perfect either way. With the spare dye you can touch up the rest of your vinyl as needed.

Well, as fate would have it, I had already installed that portion of the deck when I found the seat...however, I had installed a bulkhead/floor support last week, that prevented me from getting under there anyway. And I can't get to it from inside the ski locker.

I'm ok, with a little box..I'll glass it in nice and paint it with enamel.

Bear has me strongly leaning toward snap in carpet...I think that the cost I will save in not having to buy glue will just about make up for the cost of buying a snap kit and having the edges sewn and it will be alot easier to keep up and prevent premature deck rot. Plus I won't have to buy as much carpet, so I'll save there too. Just need some help to come up with a layout for the carpet.

I'm leaning toward preping the heck out of the deck and laying down two layers of enamel primer, then at least 2 layers of enamel paint with the first coat having a bit of sand in it.

Mtribe, you could gelcoat the deck which would make it alot tougher, You could brush it on then dab the flat side of a foam brush in it to make it nonskid. Worked great for my swimplatforms.

A great idea indeed..unfortunately I can't get under the deck as of last week when I installed and glassed the bulkheads.

If anybody can help me, I'm trying to find a thread on here that I ran into a while back. It was a deck and stringer restore on an early 90's or late 80's boat..I thought it had a yellow color scheme..anyway, they built some really cool wooden pedestals for his captains chairs..they were actually tapered from the bottom up on all four sides. and I think he glassed them in.

Bear, maybe you can find it?

How much $$ are we talking to do a deck my size?

I'll look for that thread.

Gel-coat would be cool for your deck!

Yea, it would probably be really nice..I just need to see what the difference is cash is going to be.

Hey, thanks for finding that thread...thats what I'm thinking of.

Just got in for the night, and after decided to attempt the snap in carpet, that opened up a WHOLE lot more prep work. I think I'm going to have nightmares about my grinder tonight:eek::eek::eek:

If there is going to be exposed deck, then I need to make it nice and smooth and accept the new paint as best I can. I probably have another few hrs at least left of grinding away old crap on the deck and left over glue.

I should have all of the deck pieces in place tomorrow and I'll get some more pics up. Sand it down nice and smooth, make sure its all relatively flat and then lay a couple layers of glass and get ready for paint.

I think I'm going to make some boxes under the jump seats like we talked about..that will be nice for 3 reasons...storage, support for the seat, and a step getting back in the boat. Thanks for the idea!!

Yea..I'm really excited about the new setup in the interior..its going to open up alot of space with the captains chair and make driving the boat alot more enjoyable. This should be a big week..I'm going to lay down the final glass on the deck, and am leaning towards either GelCoat for the deck or EasyPoxy. And then I'm going to do snap in carpet on top of that.

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Made alot of progress today! I sealed up the final panel of the deck..smoothed out and did as best I could to level the seems and then sealed them up with Poly. I ended up get most of the seams tabbed with CSM and will have that finished tomorrow..Should have the deck totally glassed and be ready for the top coat within a day or so. Baring Mr. Murphy stays away:p I'll get some pics up in the next post.

First, I wanted to share with you a few pictures from yesterday. My wife and kids have been really patient with me while doing this project as I've put in so many hours out there, I lost count.

It was a holiday yesterday, so we decided to go out with a family and do some riding. We went up in the hills a bit, and it was a gorgeous day..mid 70's and not a cloud in the sky...Here are some pics..Enjoy!

Ok..here are some updated boat pics

Got the ski locker, ground down and clean up..put 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of Enamel down...Looks good, but I'm going to put down a rubberized mat to protect it from ski's and whatever else will be in there.

Before doing anything..there was carpet in here before. Had to grind down paint and old glue.

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Here is the deck officially glued in and screwed down. I ended up getting on a roll and PL'd the seams..ground down the excess and started to tab the seams with CSM. Got dark on me, so I'll finish tomorrow, then start to lay down CSM and 6 oz cloth over everything.

In this pic, you can see a cutout I made for the Main Gas line..I'm sealing the entire deck this time, but because of the placement of the hose fittings on the tank, anybody will be able to change the hoses without lifting the deck.

Here is a little deck I made that I will screw down the seat pedestal to.

Thanks Bob..we're on the home stretch forsure! Here are some pics from Today..I got all of the seams tabbed and ran up the sides about 6 inches. I then came back over everything with CSM..tomorrow I'll put a layer of 6oz cloth for a smooth finish and then get it ready for Gel Coat!
