Why the high octane fuel? Just for a more predictable destination or are there other benefits?
Two strokes run at their best when they are bordering on a lean mixture ....it only takes a change in ambient temperature or pressure then they can seize or get hot enough to pre-ignite , I just think that a high octane fuel gives you a little more protection if your pushing it a bit hard.
For a non race recreational motor I think you should run it slightly richer than optimal and most of these motors leave the factory running a safe rich mixture. Some peeps know this and lean them off a tad ....some go to far and martyr their motor.
2 strokes a fussy things and are surprisingly complicated for something with only 3 moving parts ( crankshaft , con rod and piston ).
Have a look at some KT100 cart racers ...they have a thermocouple under the spark plug with a digital display on the steering wheel that gives them a real time peek at the running temp and they will twiddle the carb jetting on the go ( they have carbs like chainsaws that have screw adjustable hi and low speed jets ).
If I were mine I would see what jets are in the carbs and unless you want every ounce of power I would stick with the factory jetting ....specially if you just want to ride the thing and are not interested in constant fiddling or stressing about swimming home.
Get in with a bunch of peeps who run these things ( maybe on line ) and if your interested there are butt loads of 2 stroke theory books which can give you an insight as to whats really going on . I have seen soooo many 2 stroke problems being misdiagnosed .......like if your running close to the edge tuning wise even stale gas can tip them over and you get a bunch of melted pistons .
I dont know your climate but if it has hot days ......try getting up early while its still cool and go for a blast ,it will run better in cool dense air ......most motors will, but it gives you some idea just how much ambient conditions can effect the tuning.
Oh and these 2 stroke jet ski motors are not the same as 2 stroke carbed outboards ......much more like a motorbike .
