Random Question! What kind of plywood did you use. In the pictures it seems rather rough? Thanks in advance. I tried searching the thread for a reference and never found one.

I used regular old exterior grade plywood from Home Depot. Some of the faces are rough (indents from the laminating press at the factory), and a few knots, but nothing a little sanding and PB can't fix. I posted a pic somewhere of the transom keyhole cutout after it was installed, there are no visible voids anywhere around the keyhole, so I'm happy with the product. I found out late in the project (last week or so) the local Home Depot does in fact sell Aurauco plywood, had I known that, I would likely gone that route. The local prices for a 3/4" 4x8' sheet of plywood are roughly as follows:

-Home Depot ext grade (non PT) - $30
-Home Depot Aurauco - $58
-Windsor Plywood MDO - $80
-Windsor Plywood Marine Grade - $130

Sooooooo, the price is very attractive for the ext grade, I figured as long as the prep work is done, it should work just fine. Hope that helps!

Re: 1999 Celebrity 190 - Engine Mount and Stringer Repair

Time for an update.

Had to wait for more materials to show up, which they did yesterday. Since my last progress update, this is what's happened.

I cut out the steering arm reliefs above the keyhole, well, didn't cut them, more like ground them out using a 1" drum sander on a drill. It worked quite well actually.

Cleaned up the original rubber strips and siliconed them to the underside of the fuel tank. Don't worry, I used waterproof silicone.

The ski locker is almost complete. Over the past while I've been chipping away at it. After the floor went in and was PB'd, I tabbed with a strip of 1708 to the stringers, then did a full layer of 1708 over the floor and tabbing, then encapsulated everything in a layer of CSM. Just need to cut out the drain, then do a quick sanding before the gelcoat. I also started installing the cleats for screwing the deck to. These were just 2x2's, coated in resin, then glued into place with PB and screwed to the stringers, then wrapped in CSM for waterproofing. The CSM layer was sloppy, but it's more for waterproofing than anything else.

Finished filleting the engine mounts and aft stringers with PB.

Here is a shot of a test fit with the engine mounts caps in place. These are made of two 1/2" layers of plywood laminated together. The plan is to epoxy them in place with the left over West System stuff I bought for the transom.

Tonight I glassed in the engine mounts and aft stringers with 3 layers of 1708. This is a cavity that will be covered with the engine mounts caps, so it had to be done before the caps were installed.

That's it for now folks. Have a good Friday!

I'm guessing your work is better than it had coming from the factory. Nice progress!

Put your sunglasses on.....ski locker IS GELCOATED! And holy smokes am I ever pleased with the results! This stuff went on so easy, and cured to an incredibly hard finish. I rolled it on VERY thick (by painting standards anyways) and let it cure, shouldn't need a second coat.

First, here's a shot of the sanding prepwork, just before the ceremonial acetone-ing.

Then, voila!

Re: 1999 Celebrity 190 - Engine Mount and Stringer Repair

Also got a little work done on the engine mounts.

Caps were installed over the laminated supports/stringers using epoxy, and screwed into place.

Got one of the mounts glassed in. The mount received 2 layers of 1708 tabbed to the hull, 4 layers on the sides and tops. Still need to finish glassing in the aft stringers just in behind the engine mounts. The stbd side still needs to be done, glassing in the mounts was EXTREMELY tricky and time consuming. Like the dope that I am, I forgot to round out the outside edges of the mounts, so wrapping around the edge was a pain the arse. Lesson learned...

Looking good . . .

I have used a sheet of plastic (like plastic drop cloth) over the wetted glass to get it to take a right angle snuggly.

I noticed that you have the keyhole in the transom all cut out now. Probably some resin or glass to seal that up. It is always something that many boat manufacturers don't do well enough and it can lead to early transom rot. Not sure what the tolerances are of the keyhole, in terms of adding a layer of glass, but something to consider.

If you don't have clearance to add glass over the exposed keyhole (I didn't), you might mix up some resin set to kick slowly (to allow it to soak in) and paint it on the wood. A large pipe cleaner will allow you to do the same with the holes for studs around the keyhole.

Yeah that would work!

As for the keyhole, I'll have to check with the gimble housing installed to see what kind of clearances there are. I don't think there would be a problem with grinding back a 1/16" all around the keyhole to make room for a layer of CSM. If not, I may just soak it in low catalyzed resin like JAS suggested. Will also be rolling on some gelcoat as well.

Thanks for the tips gents!

Impressive Motor Mounts. I'm thinkin they'll be there for a while!!! Make sure to pre-drill and 5200 the mechanical's during installation and all will be right in the Boating World!!!

Thanks Wood!

5200 the lag bolts before the install? Is there an advantage to using 5200 over 4200 in this application? From what I read, 5200 is a "permanent" adhesive, although I would imagine the lags would still be removable. Just curious is all.

Yeah, I'd use the 5200 on the Motor mounts. Like you said it's "Permanent" but... For the motor mounts, Not so much!!!:D

I would use epoxy on the raw edge of the keyhole before I used poly resin.. The poly has no strength without csm..

The resin can crack easily and cause water intrusion.. Just my 2 cents worth..

You are doing a great job.. Have enjoyed your thread a great deal..
