200 hp Johnson locking lever

I can’t seem to engage the lever to lock the outboard in the lifted position. (See video.)

I have a Frankenstein-motor. It’s a 200 hp Johnson. Powerhead model number J200VLSIF. Leg and lower unit off a dead FITCH, model E200FPXSSH.

It tilts up and down just fine. Just won’t lock. I’m not even sure how it’s supposed to work. First time using the motor since I put the units together and mounted it on an Aquasport 222 Sandpiper.

Something is froze up, that should spin....by the way, that's the mooring or service lock...there should be a double lock as well.

Thanks. Looks like there are a couple of internal components as well. I tried removing the Allen head bolt in the center but it wouldn’t budge.

Gee, I doubt you will need that locking lever. If the PTT will hold the motor when running under load, it will hold it fine when not running.


You can use the flip down lock when trailering, if you think that is necessary, but I still think the PTT is up to it easily.

It's to take pressure off the ram while moored. I don't know anyone who actually uses it.

Thanks! My other boat is an old Bayliner with a Force outboard that has a weak PTT. I use one of these Walmart specials.

I honestly don’t know what those are! It’s my first Johnson/Evinrude and I’m just now getting it running and ready for trailering.

They have pop down trailer holders...only Evinrude that I know of...very robust.

Gee, Bud, on my Johnny '98 150HPV6, one needs to move the trailering brace away from the grease fitting on the swivel shaft, to get to the zerk.

They have pop down trailer holders...only Evinrude that I know of...very robust.

Found’em! Thanks. I’m totally new to the brand. Only had Force and an older Mercury before. Come to think of it, I think my very first boat had a late 60s or early 70s Johnson on it. I got it for $600 but it took me a long time to get it up and working.

Sounds like I need to find that zerk and grease it. I haven’t greased anything yet
