Bought this boat as a first boat 38 days ago from a dealer who went through the boat and said she's good. $7500
This is a first boat for our family and we wanted to get a used boat for our first boat to make sure it's something we would enjoy doing then possibly upgrade to newer next year.

Well we went out on it Saturday all day and she ran great. Sunday I checked the oil figuring we've been on it 5 or 6 times now let's see if it's low. Oil looked great still had that newish oil feel and look not completely black yet....
Checked all my hoses and connections all looked good, sqeezed the water hoses to check for leaks ect....
Well we get to the Marina and start her up, we have our 13 yr old daughter with us and her friend who's never been on a boat so I give it a little speed to raise the front up to scare them. But all in all it runs and picks up speed great. Until I shut her down in the water to set up my inverter and pump up the tube for the kids. When I start it back up I notice the engine running a little weird and the battery voltage is low almost 11. I try to give it speed and it won't get speed at all so I stop and wait for the voltage to go past 12, get it going again and it starts slow but ends up gaining some speed after a bit.
Head back take her out the water. Battery voltage dropped to 10 on the last time I stopped to deflate the tube and let the kids on the boat again. Got home checked the battery it was at 85% full. I charge her up clean all connections and few days later I put it in and head down to the river. Put her in the river and tried to start it, starts hard and stalls battery shows 10 volts even though I know it's fully charged and good.
So just for the hell of it I pull the dipstick and it's milky color. Obviously water got in it some how, but to go from looking great Sunday before we went out to instantly milky maybe an hour on the water just doesn't make sense to me and I guess I'm praying I don't have a $8000 dollar lawn ornament now.
Any advise on things I can check before I dump her at a repair shop. I'm in NY so not a ton of volvo repair shops so I'm guessing when I drop it it will sit there long past the small boating season we get in NY.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give all info incase any of it might be why I'm having this problem.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,....... Here in the I/O forums we don't care what the make, 'n model of the boat is,.....
But, what's very important is Which motor, 'n Which drive is on / in it,.....
Serial numbers are a big plus too,.....

welcome : it is possible but not conclusive that you may have had some reverb , this is where water comes up the exhaust and into the motor either when slowing suddenly , running slow or stopped with a load in the back of the boat.

it sounds like the alternator has given up causing the battery voltage to be slow to catch on probably the inverter is not designed for the older system. "just a guess there".

change the oil and filter and take here out for a bit , keep a close eye on how or if the oil color changes or whether it goes higher on the dipstick ,higher on the dipstick is not conclusive BTW but can be an indication that there is an internal leak..

until you have deciphered if you have an internal engine leak or not its a bit hard to move on with diagnostics or repairs.

open or closed cooling ? .

Sorry guys, posted this while drinking my blues away lol. Boat has the Volvo penta 3.0 Volvo drive in it open cooling.
I did drain the oil and change the filter last night but good ol NY weather it started raining so I did not put it in the river afterwards I will be tonight.
I did stop abruptly when we made it to the middle so I could get the tube out and pumped up. And there was a few times I noticed the water came up high on the back but I don't think that high.
Spoke with the dealer and they were more then happy to tell me my 30 day warranty was done and they don't work on Volvo engines but do sell boats with them in it.

As for the pumping up the tubes going forward I did buy a power bank from Amazon after I thought it messed up the battery so won't be using the invertor again. Was going to just install a cigar lighter permanently but after all this I didnt want to chance it.

Small update, bought another new filter and oil before bringing it down to the river and changed the oil again just to get any of the old stuff that might have remained out.
Got to the river and tied her up. Turned the key and battery voltage was showing 10 again and she started but started rough. So I shut it off and checked the dipstick, still fresh oil.
Turned the key again and voltage was back to normal, showing almost 14. Started it up and she started right up no problem no hesitation no bogging like it was. So I let it run for 25 mins temp at 150 oil pressure reading fine.
Pulled dipstick fresh oil. Turned it off and started it again, battery voltage reading proper and no problems starting. Let it sit there and run a while, dark here now so wasn't going out on the river, rain we've gotten that river is hauling ass and I'm not brave enough to chance it alone with the problems I'm having. So shut it down loaded it on the trailer and just got home. Checked the oil and it still looks fresh. Gonna go out to the lake tomorrow with a buddy and his boat so he can ride along side of me while I give it a real test and see if she goes milky again while keeping an eye on the guages

You have an alternator and a possible water intrusion. Water intrusion could be as others have mention water flowing back up through the exhaust after a quick stop. Or head gasket or exhaust manifold.

It would be nice to see the oil that you took out of the engine.

After you run the boat, it would be good to remove the spark plugs to see if you are getting any water in the cylinders.

The battery may be bad, so see about getting a new battery.

I do still have the oil and will post a pic after work today.
The battery was new when I got the boat little over a month ago now and I did pull it when the issue started and have it tested it is good. I have a tool to test the alternator that I am going to try today but before I head out on the water I'm going to pull all the connectors on everything and clean them all. Some look pretty dirty I noticed yesterday so figure it couldn't hurt.
I work at a large trucking company and one of our mechanics is coming by tomorrow to pressure test it and a few other things he wanted to check.
I have a date to drop it at a local repair shop but it's a month out so really just doing what I can before dropping it off hoping my inexperience with boating and boats that I did something wrong and it was a 1 time thing the oil getting milky but am fully aware that is most likely not the case.
My brain just can't accept that I checked the oil that morning and it looked like fresh oil then a hour later and 10 mins on the water the gasket blows and the oil is coffee colored. I hear these stories all the time just didn't think I'd have the story on the first boat I bought.
Plus my wife is getting a huge kick out of she said we should have went new and for the first time in my life I tried to be smart and buy something used to make sure my family would enjoy it more then a handful of times and then it sit in the yard getting Rusty like our brand new 4 wheelers that the kids loved for 1 season but dont really use anymore. I was only planning on having this boat this season then upgrading next to a newer boat.

It could have come up the exhaust, or the joint between the manifold & elbow could be leaking back into the cyls. Alternatively you could have past overheat damage causing a leaky head gasket. It isn’t uncommon on the 3.0 esp if run hard or overheated. You should try to determine if you have water only in the oil & not in the oil + cyls or, oil in both. Pull the spark plugs crank the engine & see if water comes out of the spark plug holes.

Just got home from work and went straight for the dipstick. It was clear of color when I left the dock last night and parked her in the driveway but when I just pulled the dipstick it was cloudy, the more I stuck it in and checked it the clouding it got and its right back to the same milky look. So going to stop testing my luck and just wait on the repair shop to get it in.
Thanks for all the comments and information you all are great. In the short time we've had this boat just boating around we've made numerous new friends and had a blast as a family that didn't include the phones being stuck in the kids faces so we are definitely not done boating no matter where this repair goes.

I drained the new oil that I used to flush the system into the same bucket so it's darker than it did look. The dipstick pic is the color it was.

You need to at least get the old milky oil out of her, take out the plugs and get what you can out of the cylinders and put some fogging oil in there. Letting her sit with water in the engine is not good. I had a similar problem one time, turned out ti be a tiny hole in the exhaust manifolds.

Take off the oil cap on the valve cover when the engine is cool & see if there is a mayonnaise like deposit clinging into the valve cover. That’s a sure sign of water in the oil. That will show it more accurately & sooner that on the dipstick. Your dipstick oil doesn’t look bad but the oil that was drained looks milky.
