Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Put the boat in the water last night to fire up the motors and check for leaks before I moved forward with removing the steering and building a leaning post. the ol'150 (1979) started up like a champ and ran great. The '64 9.5 kicker started on the second pull and idled out nicely.
Pulled the boat home and started disconnecting the wiring in the console and removed the old steering system. I hope the new system installs as easy as the old one came out. I'm a little cautious of my measuring for the new cable but I guess we'll see when it arrives in the next few days.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Since I'm waiting for the new steering system and paint. I started in on fabrication of a leaning post. I built the seat last night and will probably weld up the base on Saturday. I'd do it tonight but its "date night" as my wife says.

Started with some 1/2" board. I drilled the seat base and inserted T-nuts so that I can attach the seat to the post base.

I then used my nailer to tack it up.

Used some 1 1/4" screws to firm everything up.

The wife had removed our mattress topper a month or so back and I stashed it away for something and it came in handy for the padding. It was a two layer topper with two different stiffnesses of foam. I used the stiffer for the base foam and the second layer for just the top of the seat.

I'm no upholstry wize but it will work for now. My wife had saved some heavy marine vinyl from a hot tub cover project we had like 7 years ago.

Started welding up the leaning post frame on Friday night, didn't make it very far before I ran out of welding wire. The last time I used the welder was to make a duck blind out of 3/4" emt conduit on my 12 footer.
Picked up some more wire tonight and some small angle steel for leg supports.
Here is the progress. Leaning post is now sitting in its place on the boat. what a great and fun project this was and killed time before my steering and paint will arrive on Monday.

Yah, I am with EZ, yur going to have rump roast there. That much white vinyl from JoAnn's wouldn't hardly cost you, eh.

It's a royal blue color and I'm sure it will get warm but we'll give it a try and see how it goes. It will be a great little mid June project to reupholster it with something lighter before the 4th of july.

New steering is on the truck for delivery today.
Paint should also arrive today.
Things left to do before splash.
Install new steering
Paint & bolt down seat base.
reinstall console
rewire console - hurray!
repaint hull and console
install new carpet
Fill outboard lowerend fluid
buy 51 gallons of gas at $4.29/gal for a total of $219.24. Wow, I can't wait to get out on the water.

Have a great day.

New steering is installed.
Leaning post was installed last night.
Lowerend fluid changed.
All that is left is to paint the hull and console and install carpet and reinstall console and wire it up.

It hasn't been warm enough yet to paint the hull and I don't want to install the carpet till I have completed the paint job. Weather looks promising for painting this Friday and Saturday.
Here is a photo of the leaning post installed.

Looks like some nice work on that leaning post, I'm sure it's rock solid. Good to have when you are trying to navigate and the boat is rocking in some swells.:)

That rig will really fly with a 225, are you leaning towards a bigger 2-stroke or something quieter so you don't scare the birds off?

BTW I grew up in Petoskey, the photos are very nostalgic for me since I have not been back there very often since we moved in '92.

Probably launched 2-300 times from that same ramp where the little league field used to be.:D

Used to troll all day long out in front of the old cement plant for lakers and chinook. How's the fishing been in the bay lately?

I haven't made it out fishing and I haven't seen many boats out yet either. That may be due to fuel prices a little. There is a steady stream of fly fishermen down at the mouth of the river/marina.
I will be out as soon as the boat is ready.
I'd love to go to a 225 but its not in the cards right now and I would also want to upgrade to hydraulic steering if I go much larger than a 150. Ideally if I had the cash, I would go with twin 90's or 115's and I just may some day. For now the ol '79 150 will work just fine.

Wife and I moved up here from Central Michigan to start a family almost 4 yrs ago. I love it here and I love the community. Its the closest to the UP and the furthest from the family that my wife would let me move.

Well, finally had some consistant weather to paint the boat last night.
Carpets going in tonight and we will be on the water on Friday and some lines in the water fishing all weekend.
Here are the photos of the new paint and new blue stripe.

Well, she's finally done and has had two good runs with the family this past weekend.
Finished up last week with carpet install.
Switch board was faulty so I had to replace that.
Mother gave me an early fathers day gift of a Garmin 541S combo unit which sits nice on the console.
I also scored two "free" pontoon seats from my local mechanic who was replacing furniture on a couple of customers pontoons this spring.
