I'm going to be stripping down my 22' Starcraft center console to make more room for duck hunting gear.

This is the project boat. I bought it this week to strip it down. It was a smoking good price.

That is a great hull, perfect for the big lakes here in Michigan.

What did you pay for it? Many of us are secretly waiting for a great deal on a 22' tinny like that.:)

What kind of setup are you gonna go with, side console?

It seems like the extremely high sides/freeboard would make it tough to retrieve birds.(or does the lab just jump off the bow and get 'em for ya?)

This will be a layout tender. I will fab up a new center console that is just large enough to house the steering, throttle and switches and have some storage for the radios and needed dry safety equipment. I picked this up for less than $3K. I have not started the project yet but I am working on my list and budget. I'm hoping to sell the existing console, seat and bowrail to help pay for the short budget list of new floor, floatation foam, paint, new (homemade) console. It will be a least a week before I can sink my teeth into the project but I'm ready to roll on it.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project

This site has been great, although I think my wife is sick of me staying up so late reviewing posted projects.
With the help of this site, I've been able to get a real grasp on what I'm instore for with my restoration/retrofit.
And I've been able to get a true concept of my budget.
Thank you all very much.

So today I sketched up my rendition of the new console, while I was in the reading room I might add. (the only place I get some peace, with a 2yr old and a 7month old in the house.)
I mocked it up tonight out of cardboard and ductape.
It turned out great, and although I don't have the boat here at the house, I think its size of 26" W x 18"L x 28"H it will sit nicely centered in my 8' beam. with the steering and throttle mounted on top it should just break the line of the gunwals. I'm going for a low profile as this will be a duck boat.

The contols will be mounted flat on top of the console so that I can operate the boat from the front of the console, while I'm spooling in/out decoy motherlines.

While I was sitting behind the console envisioning its position in the boat, cented and in the back. I started to dream of using this boat when it wasn't duck season and I started to see two bench seats, one on eitherside of the boat with a pedestal table mounted in the middle. I could just see my wife and two kids sitting eating dinner, while we did a little August evening trolling for salmon on lake michigan.

When I ran in the house and told my wife what I had seen, her reply was, "your only trying to justify to me how much money your going to be spending on this boat" "and I might add that I haven't even seen this POS yet". She can be critical at times but I have great vision of this boat and I'm not looking back.
Well, thanks for reading. I will continue to post my project as the saga continues..... back to viewing others great projects and questions.... Good night.

That's a real nice hull with a heck of a motor on it. I'm a purist as well but it's a friggin' CC. Not sure what everyone was upset about. Only thing in it is the console! Rip, rip away I say! Now if you were converting an Islander to an open hunting boat then I'm sure we'd rather you not tell us about it :p Good luck with your project.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project *UPDATE*

I like your rig man!

Help me out...

What is the advantage of tearing out the old console and putting in a new one??

I can see pulling that extra seat and taking the bow rail off to gain the extra space and clear the bow for tending lines. Working with the console you have seems like you'd be saving a ton of time and $$.

Welcome and have fun man!:D

The current console takes up a ton of space as well does not allow for boat operation from infront of the console. The new console I have mocked up has a footprint of 26"W x 18"L and will have steering and throttle top mounted for easy access. In addition the highth with the stearing will be just flush with the gunwals as to create a lower profile. I can build this console for about $60. And if I can find someone that wants my console, then maybe I'll have a little extra coin to put into this projects budget.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project *UPDATE*

Sandblasted the trailer yesterday. Installed new tires after painting the rims. And as of tonight, I have a nice new gloss black trailer. 4 cans of self etching primer and 3 cans of Rustoleum Gloss black. Should last for a year or two. Will post up a photo tomorrow.

I think you should stick with "The Fox Den" name.

Sorry, but new name is already picked out from a good child hood memory.
