She's coming right along...and I think we all have days like that, where it feels as though your moving in slo-mo, other times it seems so close to being ready.

Do yourself a favor and 'don't' make a 'to do' list...that can definitely ruin your day at times LOL.......you'll get there before you know it ;)

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Last night, removed old rivets, wire wheeled the ribs, vacumed the waterways and wired in the battery switch.

Not a bad night.

I'm hopeing to put her in the water today after work to test for leaks, I'm also going to fill my fuel tank with water after I have layed it in the new location, to get a look at how she will sit in the water and if the location is good.

I'll take some photos of her in the water tonight.

Have a good day.

Shooting for deck installation by Sunday.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Ok, I know you're probably sick of me by now but I found this on another web site so I thought I would post it and let you take it for what it's worth

How 'bout a COOL TIP.

If you're stuck (sorry 'bout that -- I couldn't resist) trying to remove glued down carpet, you may need to take a different tact with the removal methods you employ.

Try DRY ICE. It's amazing what it can do. You should probably call around first to locate a good (inexpensive) supplier for dry ice. Although it's available from many grocery stores in small quantities (great for keeping your frozen foods frozen when the electricity goes on the blink), it's better to buy it from the actual manufacturers (ice makers) if you have one in your town.

You have to be very careful handling dry ice -- it's extremely cold. Wear gloves or other protective covering. DO NOT LET IT TOUCH YOUR BARE SKIN. IT WILL FREEZE BURN BARE SKIN TO THE TOUCH.

The nice thing about dry ice is that when it melts it's gone. It leaves no residue. Unlike nomal ice that leaves water in it's path, dry ice evaporates into thin air (well, foggy air anyway). Dry ice is what they use in the theatre when they need to create the illusion of "smoke". Meanwhile dry ice will freeze the old glue, vinyl, etc. almost instantly allowing you to chip up pieces much more easily than not.

I typically use a medium-sized chunk (1/4 to 1/2 pound at a time) keeping the remainder in my freezer or in a special insulated box (styrofoam 2 - 4 inches thick). Be forewarned: It will continue to melt in the freezer and it will freezer burn items it lays against unless insulated by a packaging material (e.g. styrofoam -- it's cheap, easy to find and works very well).

I place the 1/4 to 1/2 pound piece in an old metal tray. One with handles at both ends. I set the tray and ice on top of the area I want to chip away next. After a few minutes time, the area directly underneath and around the tray becomes VERY BRITTLE and much easier to remove. Meanwhile, I move the tray and ice to ready another area while I chip away at the first spot.

Depending on the size of the floor I need to clean, I'll go through 5 to 10 pounds of dry ice per day. You don't need it everywhere. It's just nice to have handy. Anything helps to make a hard just a little easier.

Hope this helps.

I'm just sayin...:D

I've used a heat gun and a putty knife with good success, and then WD40 for light residue.

Good luck!

Started to install new foam.
Filled holes on rail with Metal 2 Metal (still need to sand down)
Removed the "Starcraft" graphics from the hull.
Installed battery switch.

Things left to do:
Plum in fuel cell.

Cut new deck and stain it on all sides.
Build Console and stain on all sides
Paint hull

Lookin' Good!

I love that you left that huge compartment open for me to put all of my birds in. I wouldn't want them to be crowded!

Great call on putting the foam in vertically. I think that definitely allowed you to use the space more efficiently.

Keep up the good work, Cap'n.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Today I picked up 7' of 1.5"x 1/8" WT aluminum tube and 2' of certified fuel fill hose.
I will be installing my fuel fill line tonight, pending that I make it out to get a 2.25" Hole saw.
Once I have it installed I can finish the foam install and move forward with my project.
I am shooting to be installing deck and building my console this weekend.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Tonight I finished the main foam install. I will still slip in a few more pieces where needed.
I also mocked up the new fuel fill line.
I am proposing to use two sections of 1.5" x 1/8" W.T. aluminum tube.
I have a 4" hose connection under the gunwal, followed by a 28" piece of tube, leading into a 10" hose elbow, then a second 28" piece of tube and finished with a 4" hose connection at the tank inlet.
Here are some photos of tonights work and the fuel fill mock up.

I will be busy with honey do's for the next two days as my wife is having a cookout for her coworkers here at the house on Friday night.
I will be back at it on Saturday.
In the meantime, feel free to give me your input on the fuel Fill idea.

WOW! That was well...sort of like a HIJACK! jeez!

First off. That casting deck serves no structural purpose whatsoever. My 22 foot Sunchief was designed for BIG water and the bow is completely open with no bracing whatsoever. So if you want to leave it out, go for it.

Now lets talk about the Rhino liner. Does that stuff hold up well under UV? It's just a brand name bed liner right? I know the liner in my three month old truck is starting to fade already. I'd look into that before I sprayed it in my boat. And I seriously wouldn't apply it below the deck. Go with the gluvit! That stuff has been around since dirt was mud and it's tried and true for what you're using it for. Plus the gluvit is self leveling so it WILL seek out leaks and flow into them.

As far as the starboard, to each his own. Just remember, everything has pros and cons. Research your materials and make an informed decision based upon what you're trying to achieve.

Good job so far, but I would have used the extruded polystyrene instead of that isocyanurate for flotation.

Now, I don't get out much but this is probably one of the worst hijacks I have ever seen.

This whole deal is conversation worthy (and debatable), to be sure, but really needs to be a thread of it's own. I am thinking that roughshot doesn't even want to deal with it, I can tell by his earlier post.

My hope is that one of our friendly neighborhood mods might move this conversation (starting at post #51) to a new thread. Maybe title it "Aluminum Boat Rebuild Methods by 191Seanymphstriper" or something like that.

Cheers!

Roughshot....... my apology for letting this get so far out of hand.

There will be no grandstanding/hijacking of posts here.

Not at all trying to jump topics or hijack.... But, I have a question: Doesn't gasoline dissolve polystyrene foam? (Ok, two questions) What's the reasoning behind using that over the isocyanurate for flotation? As far as I know, the isocyanurate is not affected by gasoline.

It seems like it would be safer in a boat like Roughshot's to have the gas tank bedded in place by foam that won't be dissolved if some gas should come in contact with it.

Re: 22' Starcraft Mariner Project is underway!

Sry! Wasnt trying to high jack anything! Im new to the iboats forums and was asking a friend what high jacked ment. I get it! Sry.... Diddnt understand the rules of the land etc.. And didnt mean to get off topic...... To roughshot Looking really good.... Keep up the good work... I know there are all kinds of redoing, resterations etc.... Theres a total clasic restoration close to factory like NB restoration... Theres the fix her up and get her in the water quick redo... And theres the make it better then new and up to date restoration... I guess all restorations are done be wants needs and prefrence. I prefer the make it like new and up to date. I am a heavy fisherman... So When I redo these tinys I use a differnet approach with the flooring by using staboard and shooting the iner hull with ryno lining... Because I fish hard and in heavy seas... Now duck hunting I have never done especially from a boat.... But looks great so far. I like the smaller console it will really open up the boat making it feel even biger then she already is! Also are you really going to hinge a compartment to keep some ducks in? Or did you just not get to foaming that area? Thats a thought I had have when I plan to restore my tiny. But i was thinking of making it dry storage with a drain plug etc.... What are your ides on that rough shot?

The gas will attack the isocyanurate as well as the polystyrene. I just think the styrene would not absorb water as quickly.

Thanks to all for the input and no offense was taken over the "hijack".
I've got the wiring run to the console location and everything is set for installing the deck and painting.
I will be taking a break from the boat this week to hunt some geese and will get back at the boat by weeks end.
I will post up photos this weekend.

Gotcha. Thanks. I have always wondered about that and never asked. Being that I'll probably hunt from this project a time or two, I thought it was the perfect time to post the question.
