Re: 29' Carter Safari

Gypsysoul, i didn't know you opened your tank up? what did you do about it? You had no baffles? that seems odd.... fuel sloshing all over the place... hmmm

Our tank has never leaked a drop of fuel, nor have we ever had a fuel oder in the compartments.... which after i left the pickup tube out for a few days and opened the lids today there was a STRONG fuel oder....

The glass is SOLID and smooth, complete with some factory scuff marks from bonding the tank together?(can be seen in the sidewall photo in earlier post)

Does old gas really solidify like that? thats weird!

i was bored... heres the lid im planning to make to reseal the tank

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Hey there Matt,

I'm loving the progress! We just had to pull the deck up on our carter to get to the tank. The previous owner had installed an aluminum tank inside the old fiberglass one and we had a leak. Turns out he had an awesome custom tank fabricated, and instead of using the correct fittings at the join to the tank and the fill spout, he used PVC garden fittings from Home Depot and then glassed them in.....so everytime we filled up, the fittings were leaking gas into the bilge. Thats safe huh? Anyway, we made a new deck and installed it and it turned out great. Here are a couple of pics...

Deck ply put down before being glassed

Good luck...hopefully you'll have her on the water this summer.

Speeence, you are very lucky to already have an aluminium tank in place:p

Have you refinished your entire deck and eliminated the factory texture? Im tempted to do so, and paint with with a purpose textured paint....

We did refinish our entire deck. We repainted it using an LP 3 part paint (2 parts plus thinner). The previous owner had painted the decks with what looked like a generic latex house paint and it was terrible. The paint was coming off in strips and the grip was pretty bad. We had to completely strip the deck and engine covers using Jasco. It wasn't difficult but it took about four days of straight labor getting the paint off. We were also trying to maintain the factory texture so we couldn't leave the jasco on for too long. Once we finally stripped everything, we used the LP paint which is pretty cool stuff. Its not cheap but the finish is pretty amazing. We added some fine grip additive (I think it was called shark teeth but I'm not sure) and used that. The only areas we didn't use the additive was the side walls and the smooth areas of the engine covers. I was really pleased with how it turned out. We've had bloody decks and crap everywhere but the grip has been great and its easy to clean. I have to be honest though, if I had to do it again, I'm not sure I would have commited the money or the time. There are much cheaper and easier solutions out there. Our boat is mainly used for fishing, hoop netting and diving, so having pristine decks isn't at the top of our priority list....a good purpose textured paint would have been fine.

I'm excited for you guys to get her out on the water, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with how she handles the ocean. We regularly fish 25 - 40 miles out and she handles the ocean like a much wider boat, and can fly when you need her to .

Keep up the hard work and let me know if I can help out in any way.

Tisk Tisk,as a future mechanical engineer, you should have a basic knowledge of hydraulics and pnuematics(sp). You can not pressurize a tank designed for gravity flow using more than 2 or 3 psi, maybe 5 or 6 psi tops. They are simply not designed for that. It seems, you have not gotten to that stage in your studying yet. Mind you, I am not an engineer but i do deal with hydraulics and pnuematics on a daily basis(40-55kpsi waterjetting pumps). Hydraulic fluids do not compress(actually they do, but not enough to really matter). Pnuematics, on the other hand rely on compression and expansion to do the actual work. I have however been watching this build off and on, and I admire yalls work habits, abilty, and ethics. Very uncommon for men of yalls age. Congrats on he progress

haha, okay i get it:p and yeah, first year is all pretty dry math and physics..... I cant wait to get more into real world stuff!

i didnt even think about it really, ive heard from multiple people that you test a fuel tank with 100psi... maybe automotive tank? Anyways i know for next time though... hahah

Lego a word to the wise on these rebuilds wash all pcs, with soapy water and blow out w/ compressed air, soak all your parts over night (in carb cleaner) after dissasembly and a thouroughly blow out with compressed air then repeat this process remember cleanliness is next to godlyness for the best results everything must be debre free period! then set up a clean and well orginized area with pleanty of light. I also found that coating my gaskets with vasoline helped especially if there is need of a float adjustment after assembly this prevents ripping and sticking to the mating parts . Good luck and hope this helps!!!!!!

good idea with the vasoline! Ill definitely do that!

Heres carb 1 in its bath, the air horn didnt really need much bathing... but one of the little tubes is plugged up, so i sat it in there to try to free that up more then anything else...

Re: 29' Carter Safari

pulled the carb out of the cleaner to take a look, and all my paint fell off ... soo much for that... with a paper towel i took all the rest of the paint off, and rinsed/blew everything out, then put it back in the cleaner. Tomorrow ill reassemble carb 1, and take apart carb 2.. Im scared to have both apart at the same time because then i have no reference if i need it....

well, this weekend should be good, expecting rain, so i buttoned up the shelter in a fashion that we can work under it... put a light in, and move the supports so the engine hatches can open all the way..

Also after ANOTHER special trip into town i got these guys... left is one of the old

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Did you give them both a bath with soapy water first? It helps loosen up the debre and minimizes the contamination of the carb soak ( I used Berrymans from Auto Zone 19.75 a can w/ strainer basket and re-sealable lid) Wow every kit I have ever gotten has had new filiment filters. Just take your time and stay orginized, use old part for comparison!

yes, it got a bath in soapy water and a light degreaser first.

Looks good! Did the kit instructions tell you how high to set the float? As I recall they always had a table of settings for about 80 different car models but I don't know if they tell you how to set it for a boat. Anyway nice job.

Yes, i have the service manual for the engines, which includes the carb, and set the float accordingly

its been raining HARD all day, started to clear up and i went out and found inside the shelter pretty wet... our tarp is starting to get thin in wear area's... so i added another layer well the rain was lighter

Re: 29' Carter Safari

no pics today... i did a bunch of random things really. Started out by cleaning up all the wiring in the back end. multiple times going through and zipting everything, then afew more wires were added and ziptied to the zip ties... it was starting to look rather sloppy... So i cut all the zip-ties down and cleaned it up nice. Then i messed around with the very rear center cover plate for awhile. When we redid the transom we didnt make a countersink for the steering ram.... which may prove to be a problem now trying to fit that piece...thinking about making a new one with maybe a step or something in the middle...

Then i dragged the shop vac out and finished cleaning out the fuel tank, i also conducted a very interested experiment with resin/gasoline, and was able to replicate exactly what we found in the bottom of the tank. Its definitely slobbered resin from sealing the tank at the factory. :) Then I took a screw driver and poked around inside the tank for awhile looking for soft spots... found nothing! :D Maybe the later hulls used the proper resin?

meanwhile carb 2 has been soaking since yesterday late morning.... i probably wont get to it until the end of the week.. so it should be super clean

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Sorry Matt, Between flying lessons and work I don't get hear as often as I would like. But yes, two days before my maiden voyage with Gypsy, we started putting gas in the tank, just to have it run into the bilge. Slowly, I did not find it until the next day. I was in a mad rush to get to the water. so I cut the floor out and made a small opening in the top as you did. After finding the mushy fiberglass. I cut the rest of the top of the tank out. I worked for a grading and paving contractor. They had a tank out of who nows what. but it fit inside the old tank, had been coated with something that looked like it would stop it from corroding if it had been on the Titanic. it was rectangle, and the fuel sending unit was in the excat rite spot as where the filler and the vent. it measure out to be 70 gallons, so I built supports and threw it in. I have always figured I would go back in and replace it. but to date, it has not given me a problem. But reading how everybody else has done there floors is encouraging. I hated cutting the nice textured floor out. I was in a hurry, so we just glassed the floor back in place and threw indoor/outdoor carpeting over it.
On the next note. I know I have metioned that I went to work for U.S. Borax in Boron, ca., but since going to work as a mechanic, I have since taken the shop supervisor position. That came with the benefit of five weeks paid vacation. Me thinks "GYPSY SOUL" may see the water a lot more this year! And I finally got started on the flying lessons. I have around 15 hours logged so far. I think I may solo next lesson (which is Thursday). I have not got to the 944 yet. I bought a 96 chrysler sebring convertible to commute to and from work in. It turned into a nightmare. it is not a clearance engine. and I guess it had broken a timing belt and bumped some valves. I bought it from a tow yard, it had been impounded. So while I was working on some things I removed the center console to get at some wiring. And low and behold a little case with drug paraphanella (bet I spelled that wrong) came falling out. So I had to call the sheriffs dept. to come out and pick the stuff up. So can we guess now why the car was impounded? You bet, owner found to be in possession. Well now he is getting trafficing added on, it was still a open case. but it is getting me to work these days fairly cheaply. Great progress on the boat. Can't wait to see it on the water. yak at ya latter

wow! you've been busy. My double tarping seems to be working great, we are getting some VERY heavy rain and wind, and the boat is bone dry inside, far cry from before!
