Not sure. He did say he got about $1500 more than what he had into it. He bought it off ebay without really knowing anything about boats so it was quite a learning experience. He's looking to get a jet boat that's lighter to tow with his Wrangler.

Known Issues:
1. Automatic Oil Injection system tripped the alarm. Oil Injection
system could be repaired or you could just not use the automatic
injection system, bypass the system and premix your fuel/oil 50:1.
Currently running the engine on a premix of oil/fuel.
2. Speedometer does not work. I have not attempted to fix it either.
3. Gas Gauge is not accurate. It shows full when it is full but
shows that the tank has less gas in it than it actually does. Most
likely will need a new Electric Sending Unit ($40 at ********)
4. #5 cylinder is not sparking. Mercury engine mechanic diagnosed it
to be a switch panel on the engine. Estimated cost to repair is $250
for parts and one hour of labor. Engine runs without this being
repaired, but doesn't have full power due to one of the cylinders not
firing.

Re: 2nd Try at first boat...Opinions

i was with you until the end. Starting with $400 minimum in engine repairs on a $4,800 boat is not a good start. I would like to figure out a way to fix it first to be sure that's it.

One thing I like about buynig a used boat is all the stuff you get with it; you can save hundreds right there.

Some folks willl say they's be leery of a boat that had so much repaired, or the quality of his repairs. I say, use your judgment; if he seems to know what's he's doing, if his garage, yard, whatever looks squared away, give it a chance. You'll at least get a couple years out of it and don't have that much invested if it doesn't work out. Since this is your first boat you will likely be looking for a change after a couple years anyway.

I'm with Home Cookin' - if I wanna' get $4,800 out of a boat, but it ain't running right, it's probably best that I spend the $400 to fix it and net $4,400 outta' the boat.

Essentially that repair makes it a $5,200 23 year old maybe fixed boat for you.

It's good lookin' though. If you want to take a look and see if your "Spidey-sense" tells you it's a good deal just be careful.

Re: 2nd Try at first boat...Opinions

Burg_fisher,
i saw that one last summer/fall,
i am a cl junkie i thought it was in a different loacation though
when i was shoppin last year i was salivating on that boat as well
i cant remember but i thought it had a parts motor or something
again, i cant remember but , agreed, i thought it posted and flagged but not sure tho.

my spidey sense tells me ,,, be weary
flagging on cl could be unjust or an indicator of this or other ad failures

with the asking price and the unknown issue i would stay away

however, i give the poster a thumbs up on admission of the issue,
who knows maybe last year he did not truthfully sell the boat and TOOK IT BACK(yes another thumbs up, if thats the case)
most wouldn't

i had an 85hp merc tower of power and it ran on 5 instead of 6 cyl but all the while i was meltin everything
pisten melted and turned sideways .done.

it looks like he spent some time giving you lots of info(good sign).
fabrication of aluminum sub floor makes me nervous tho

heck if close i would go check it out.

let me know when your going,
if i can i'll go and give you an unemotional view

best of luck

That SeaRay is a $2k boat. Especially in that condition. Dude is trying to get out what he has into it, which just ain't gonna happen. An electrical problem with a Mercury? Yeah that's gonna cost ya!!! The boogered up rub rail on the port side would bother the heck out of me also. It could be a $4k boat if all the issues were taken care of.

Re: 2nd Try at first boat...Opinions

Thank you all for the opinions. Reason he was flagged was he was posting everything i posted here, it all was to long including the images. Story he told me was him and his father are into designing, restoring, building sailboats. A neighbor had passed away was the original owner of the boat kept the boat in a garage. During his fight with cancer, the wife had the boat taken out and put into the yard where it sat for 2 years. During them 2 year the boat accumulated water that sat there for a good while. Being him and his father build and restore sail boats he took on the boat and the project for his own personal boat. That when he took the floor up an area of wood and foam was bad and water filled. He took out and replaced the floor and all the bad foam, replacing it with what he states above. claims transom and everything else was very, solid and no additional work was done, other then replacing the gas tank that was not leaking, but was showing wear. Claimed to also have had it out until sept of last year when the motor issues started, what he posted was what he was informed from a marina mechanic that told him.The mechanic could order the parts that would of taken a couple of weeks to get. But he would not be able to get to the boat for anther few weeks after that. He Taken it home and winterized it. Stated he is not mechanically inclined as far as motor work, an intended on completing the work and keeping the boat, Then a change in careers over the winter, along with getting engaged. He will need to be moving out of state and can not afford to take all his boats with him, thus all the additional equipment that is included with the boat. He did say he was looking to get what he put into it in hopes of breaking even.

My gut feeling on this boat is he can be talked down substantially. He took a great deal of time explaining every detail, and i do mean every detail of the work he had done! He talked with a great deal of pride on the time and care he took. long with the details explaining why he did things the way he did.
Fully agree the price is way to high again no harm in looking as it will give me a chance of gaining more hands on experience of seeing and going over boats first hand, along with working on some firm negotiating skills and tactics, IF the boat is worth my time.

Re: 2nd Try at first boat...Opinions

I would run away from that boat fast! It is way overpriced, I was looking at larger boats w/ a 4.3L that were in better condition for about $4k and they were also early 90's not late 80's. Honestly I would look for a good solid hull that has a working engine, whether it is i/o or outboard. At this price range your selection is very limited.

It is like this guy is selling a total car with a rebuilt front end. Yeah it might look good, though how well was it put back together. Another member here got a boat that had a new deck on it, though since the stringers weren't replaced and were rotted, they re-rotted the "new" deck.

Ezmobee.. Being you brought that damage to my attention, i zoomed in and seems to be a crease also below the rub rail damage, along with a dinger just above the trailer wheels. Thank you again!

Re: 2nd Try at first boat...Opinions

Burg_fisher,
sorry just went back thru,
this boat on the post is from my marina
not sure if its the one i am thinking of  my memory is bad

but if so i was moored next to it
i had a lil pontoon moored in the cheap seats (500 season, no elec avail) at that time.
the guy that owned it was looking into getting a wakeboard boat with a tower
although i didnt walk around in it it looked to be in great shape full cover etc...

This one seems to be more along what we both like.
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/boa/2827342080.html

so to revisit that posting i'd check it out.

boat prices here will be on the incline here soon till early august
