Re: 3.7L 180HP rebuild with pics!
Sounds like timing, Remove spark plug #1 and stick ur finger in it. Turn the engine by hand untill you feel presure on your finger. Then bring the engine to TDC so the timing mark on the balencer points to the 0 on the front cover.
Then remove the dist cap and see if the rotor points at the wire that goes to #1 piston. If not loosen the dist and turn it so that the rotor points at the number 1 plug, then put cap on and starting at the wire the rotor is pointing to plug the wires in so the order is 1,3,4,2.
The puff out the carb is what makes it seem like a timing issue.
Yes the fuel and oil system both need primed. I used a hand pump used to fill the drive with lube to prime the fuel system, just pumped it till the carb would shoot fuel when the trottle is pushed.
If you start it only run it for a few sec..or you will burn out the cam. Google search cam break in, so you get all the info to do it right.
I rebuilt the dash for mine so it was out. I wired it up and just hooked it up to the wireing harness as if it was installed in the boat, hooked the battery up and by passed the shift interupter shift, then turned the key.
great post been following along. I just finished rebuild, engine on pallet in the garauge. Filled fluids, runnig long fuel line from gas can, battey hooked up, mech oil guage installed in line with elect sensor. Crank engine over and but engine won't run. I did get a puff at the carb one time but will not run. I have spark at points and at plug. I'm jumping #6 & #7 on wiring harnes plug to get engine to crank. Am I missing something? What would cause the puff at the carb? Does the fuel pump need to be primed? I filled the hose with gas and then inserted it into the gas can. Cranks over fine but will not run. 170 hp 2 barrel merc carb. How did you start yours?
