Re: 3.7L 180HP rebuild with pics!

great post been following along. I just finished rebuild, engine on pallet in the garauge. Filled fluids, runnig long fuel line from gas can, battey hooked up, mech oil guage installed in line with elect sensor. Crank engine over and but engine won't run. I did get a puff at the carb one time but will not run. I have spark at points and at plug. I'm jumping #6 & #7 on wiring harnes plug to get engine to crank. Am I missing something? What would cause the puff at the carb? Does the fuel pump need to be primed? I filled the hose with gas and then inserted it into the gas can. Cranks over fine but will not run. 170 hp 2 barrel merc carb. How did you start yours?

Sounds like timing, Remove spark plug #1 and stick ur finger in it. Turn the engine by hand untill you feel presure on your finger. Then bring the engine to TDC so the timing mark on the balencer points to the 0 on the front cover.

Then remove the dist cap and see if the rotor points at the wire that goes to #1 piston. If not loosen the dist and turn it so that the rotor points at the number 1 plug, then put cap on and starting at the wire the rotor is pointing to plug the wires in so the order is 1,3,4,2.

The puff out the carb is what makes it seem like a timing issue.

Yes the fuel and oil system both need primed. I used a hand pump used to fill the drive with lube to prime the fuel system, just pumped it till the carb would shoot fuel when the trottle is pushed.

If you start it only run it for a few sec..or you will burn out the cam. Google search cam break in, so you get all the info to do it right.

I rebuilt the dash for mine so it was out. I wired it up and just hooked it up to the wireing harness as if it was installed in the boat, hooked the battery up and by passed the shift interupter shift, then turned the key.

I was given a altinator for free so I decided to install it this past weekend, I came up with a cheap way to mount it, only 25$. And it only requires a little modification. I will get instructions and pictures post soon.

Solar, I talked to Comp Cams and they would check to see if our cams are compatable to the 460 or any other common cam. If our cam is compatable this would open up hundreds of profiles for us.

Only Problem I see is that I will not tear down my motor untel late winter/early spring.

Would you be willing to loan you old cam for this? I would take care of all the shipping charges.

Re: 3.7L 180HP rebuild with pics!

I am not worried about the old cam it has three bad lobes, its scrap metal now. If you want to take on the shiping cost and take it no problem we can work detailes out via PM.

I am shure that the 460 cam wont be able to be used. The lift of the lobes is wrong. the 460 has a much higher lift to start with, all the 460 cams I have seen on line by quick search all have a lift well over .4, the 3.7L/470 max intake lobe lift is .287 you may get it to work but will require a big change in push rob length to keep the valves opening the proper amount. Then there is the issue that there isnt a lobe to drive the gas pump on a 460 cam as there is for a 3.7L/470 cam, not impossible but will require a switch to an electric gas pump. The last thing is that the face of the cam is differant as well. The cam for the 3.7L/470 has three holes that are threaded in the face so that the timing sprocket can be mounted. The 460 only has one.

I really think if it fits the cost will be way more then the $185 i paid for a new cam and lefters all together, that price isnt far from what a 460 cam will cost, then to throw all the rest of the stuff in your looking at $500. Thats just muy opinion.

This is where I bought my cam from, they also have the valves, push rods and a bunch of other really hard to find 3.7L/470 parts for great prices compared to what other want.

Hi Solar,
Great post and thanks for taking the time to write it all down.
I'm planning a rebuild of my 470 soon and this has been a great help.
Also be interested to hear how it all turned out?
