Hi Solar,

To protect your work/engine/friends and family you could now put a WATER PRESSURE ALARM and gauge in... This will pick up a loss of cooling water WAAAAY before the engine gets hot enough to cause any problems. :D

Cheers,

Chris.......

I will def look into this! Thanks

Solar I am having the same trouble with my starting that you mentioned earlier. It turns half-way but can't get over the compression. I'm gonna try some new battery cables. Glad you made this thread! Thanks! :)

I just had to make these photos up to explain the cooing system to another Iboats member so I though it would be a good idea to post them on the is thread as well.

Thanks achris:)...I was going to load that as well when I got home.

I am at work now and dont have the manual on my work computer so i used the photos I had online. They both will help people though.

There are always those people that cant figure out schematic no mater how streight foward they are, they just need it pointed out on the real thing so the labled photo will help them! and the schematic will help every one else!:D

Well she is all wrapped up and read for her new life. I finished hooking up the exhaust, sea water inlets hose and the majority of the wiring. This is what her new home looks like now!

The engine compartment be for was very tight and hard to reach things so i decided to open it up the entire painted surface will be part of the engine compartment, and I made sure every thing was organized for easy reach and trouble shooting. I have a few more things to install that will be on the other side of the engine, such as batteries, the new trim tab pump and electronics, but I think it will have plenty of room.

Still looks nice... Just one comment, the trim pump.. I really don't like them on the floor. I have replaced too many rusted out brackets to count. I prefer to mount them up on the transom, keeps the water off them....

Achris...Thats a good Idea! I may have to look into that. My only issue is I would have to build a shelf for it. I tried to see if it would reach the shelf on the left side in the photo, but my thinking was just getting it out of the way, but the hoses are not long enough, and my transom is flat.

Don't need a shelf... There are two bolts holding the pump to the bracket. I just drilled a couple of holes in the transom and used slightly longer SS bolts, with some hull sealer on them. I also put a couple of spacers between the back of the bracket and the transom to stand it off a little.... Works a treat....

When you posted that I had another look at the photo, and I can see how you could think that.... :D What looks like the shelf is just a ridge about 1" wide, it's where the transom thickens for the gimbal housing to mount to...

Cheers,

Chris.......

Re: 3.7L 180HP rebuild with pics!

Well I had a bit of a dumb a** moment when doing the rebuild that has me kicking my self now. I never inspected the distributor before installing in the new engine block and as a resault installed a bad distributor. I found this out because the engine was not staying in time. I pulled the distributor and found that the drive gear was ate to hell and was slipping on the new cam gear.

So I need to do a little dirtibutor rebuild and install a new gear. Since a new gear cost abot $90 I took a trip to the local marine salvage yard and picked up a goof gear for $30.

I now the damage was cuased by the old engine, I inspected the new came gear and found no signs of any damage or anything.

The old

The new........how they should look.

So let this be an example for any one else........inspect parts when rebuilding.

I will update this thread with info on how to do this fix with in the next few days.

That looks pretty nasty....

You did use the aligning tool when you put it in didn't you?

Re: 3.7L 180HP rebuild with pics!

It was aligned and there was no binding at all in the rebuild. The teeth got chewed in the old block. They just where so thin that when I first tested it under load the cam gear broke some off the distributor gear making a flat spot. Its one of those things that I can only blame myself, i knew they felt sharp when i rebuilt the engine but didnt do a proper inspection.

The engine has only been run for a total of maybe 20 min since the rebuild so I know the it wasnt caused because of the rebuild, plus there are no rub marks on the new cam gear but the old one you can see it the marks. I will get her back in and aligned and all will be good. Then I can do my sea test this friday and get my summer on the water started.

The distributor is ready to go.

The first thing is to slide the oil pump shaft into the gear. It has to be slid in through the top. There is a ring at the top that will not allow it to slide all the way through.

Next the two spacers need slid onto the distributor shaft. The one with the tabs goes on first so that the tabs point up. Then the flat washer.

Next is to put the drive gear on to the distributor shaft and line up the hole for the compression spring.

IMG00536-20100708-0955.jpg

Once the hole is lines up the pin can be pressed in.

IMG00537-20100708-1002.jpg

IMG00538-20100708-1016.jpg

last the points and condenser are re installed and the gap for the points set to .5mm

IMG00540-20100708-1022.jpg

All done and ready to install.

IMG00542-20100708-1023.jpg

When the distributor in re-installed the alignment of the oil pump will need checked. If the pump is not aligned it will cause binding and break the oil pump drive shaft off the distributor.

Where did you get the rebuild kit from. I have a friend that needs a 3.7 rebuilt..but the only thing is it might be a cracked block i had the heads rebuilt new seats and seals. But once in the water and running it had the milk come back in the oil..Wierd thing was on the muffs it was good i ran it for hours without any water in the oil once under a load and in the water it was another story

I purchased a new long block and it came with all the gaskets needed. Then it is just a matter of removing the "bolt on" parts from the old engine and putting them on the new block, such as manifolds and such.

It came from Tide Water Machine, They have an Ebay store that they sell their stuff though. they were quick to deliver and very helpful. They answered every question I had through out the rebuild process and when buying. Plus they where the best priced, and they dont charge up front for the core charge like most places. They wait until they get the block and inspect it.

3.7L long block

Then once the old block is bare it gets sent back to the machine shop.

As for your friends engine I would think the issue is something else then a cracked block. Not to say it isnt possible but the engine has a stand alone coolant system and the blocks dont crack very offten unless it is being ran with water in the coolant system rather then antifreeze but its is pretty easy to figure out the issue.

The first thing to find out is if it is low on coolant. You need to know weather the oil turned milky because it mixed with the anitfreeze or with sea water. This will give you a starting point to figure out the issue.

If it isnt missing any coolant then the issue would most likly be cause in the exhuast manifold and riser.

If it is low on coolant then the issue can be several other place. If that is the case I would focus on the seal for the cam shaft, the gasket for the intake and the head gasket.

This is a great walk thru and excellent pics. I have a 1987 sundowner 215 i'm also restoring. ( boat was under salt water). It had a locked up 180, bought a donor boat for $300 with a bad 470 ( my bad luck) then found a 485 that fired right up in my garage....
