Hi Boatman
Your 3hp evin. mod #3432 is a 1964 model. You will need to determine if you have the spark at the right time. Check to see if you crossed the spark plug wires. Did you service the fuel system? Are you getting fuel? Does it seam like its flooding?

Hi Boatman
Wow 11yrs old that's preaty good. I think we'll be able to get you going here. To servive fuel system, means, did you clean out the tank, carb, make adjustments, ect? Did you adjust the points? The points should be set to .020 at the widest place of opening. Was this motor running when you got it? Are you sure the plug wires are not crossed? Did you install the fly wheel correctly?

Re: 3 hp evinrude engine does not work

What kind of work have you done before on outboards? The points need to be set to .020
Turn to widest opening and then adjust.
Most likely you need to check and clean the fuel system from tank to carb.Be very careful gas is dangerous and fumes will flow to the lowest point
even down stairs or across a floor.
You should try to get a repair manual. If you cant afford one sometimes you can look at one at the library. There is a float and valve in the carb. that meters the gas flow kind of like the float in a toilet tank.If the system is all gunked up with dirt and old gas the gas may not even reach the carb. You really need to look at a carb exploded view to get an understanding of the way they work.any small outboard carb will do.
You may be able to get it out of a manual or
possibly a book at the library on carbs.
or someone you know that tinkers with motors.

Ahoy, Boatman.

You are a pretty sharp young fellow. Go to your local library and borrow a service manual that covers your engine or 1964 Johnson 3HP (they are the same engine in different color).

There will be a section in there that explains how the fuel system works. You will need to check the carburetor to be sure it is perfectly clean inside. Also make sure that the fuel tank, the valve on the bottom, and the line to the carb are all perfectly clean so gas can get into your engine.

Good luck, and let us know how you are doing and any more questions you still have after you get to read the manual. :)

Hey boatman...
Just another note. When you replace the coils under the flywheel, there is a definite gap between the coils and flywheel. The setting is an easy thing to do and a service manual will tell you how to do it. To wide a gap and the engine may not fire. Stay with it and keep us posted.

Re: 3 hp evinrude engine does not work

You should not store the engine 'upside down'...lay it on its back...controls up, prop down to allow traped water to drain out. Your dogs can be an expensive asset. Seems as every one 'I' have bought parts from for my old motors seem to be quite fond of what they are selling me...and is painfully reflected in the prices they charge.

Keep the dogs 'at bay' from your parts...no pun intended :)
