Instead of paying to remove cam bearings, mag, bore & hone, re-intall bearings and core plugs, we got this block from the machinist for the same amount it would cost us to do all the work to the other one. Bore is +0.030"

I noticed that there was no thermostat in the housing, are raw water cooling systems equipped with a thermostat?

Yes.

Yes. A 140-degree thermostat should be used.

Got the thermostat ordered, along with pistons, rings, assembly lube, more gaskets, exhaust studs, main bearings, and rod bearings. Should have all the parts by the end of the week, just have to make a run across the border for pick up.

We got the crank back from the machine shop all polished up and good to go within spec..... .02 undersized mains, .01 undersized rods.
Assembly is probably going to take place mid February, I'll have to enlist my daughter to film the assembly for everyone here. I've rebuilt lots of small engines, and helped with aircraft radial engines, but this will be my first Small block ford build. I'm pretty excited to get going on this.

Officially got the build underway today. Crankshaft, cam, and timing set installed. I've learned tons just by watching a few people doing instructional videos on builds:

Lookin' good. Make sure to use the proper assembly lube for your bearings/journals to protect it prior to start-up.

U betcha, used a liberal amount of Lucas oil semi synthetic assembly lube on all bearings, lobes, rear seal, timing chain, and fuel pump eccentric.

Where is the oil windage / scavenger tray?

None here, is it a "must have" upgrade?

It isnt necessary, my 351w didn't have one either.

Moving along with the build. Did a little bit of inspection on the heads and I noticed they are stamped GT and have the 3 vertical lines on the front of the head. Some mustang forums identify these as GT40 heads. I'm not quite sure, but were these stock on the mercruiser 888?










I'll probably leave that intake blue, looks kinda neat.
