I just finished rebuilding my 88 454 mercruiser. I have searched other threads and just cant figure out the exact way to get this engine stared without a remoted ignition. What I have done is bat POS to S on starter selonoid. bat NEG ground to block. Bat POS to Coil POS then running hot wire from battery positive to starter not sure if this is right set up, not working and actually pretty scary. I would love some feedback. This has been a long rebuild and I am ready to put back in boat. Thanks for any assistance.

Bobby

*Edited to say No it is not on stand I have it on blocks and very sturdy. It wont run away on me. I also have hose ready and fuel ready to go.

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

you should have some chains from a hoist or other overhead support attched to the lifting rings with some tension to aid in supporting the engine, i would not recommend running it just sitting on blocks

that said, you need to jumper the primary side of the slave solenoid to to get the starter to turn over, not to mention you will need a fuel and cooling water supply to run the engine

2 cables, 1 to the starter. The other to ground. Red = starter. Black + ground.

2 jumpers, 1 12volts to positive side of coil. The other jumper; connect 1 end to 12 volts. The empty end of second jumper, touch it to the small yellow/red wire at slave solenoid.

Yes, like to get it started and ensure I dont have any other issues before putting back in the boat. My battery is also fully charged and I am getting a clicking noise when I engage the selonoid. any suggestions?? Maybe not lined up good with flywheel??

keep in mind all the key switch is doing is providing 12 volts to the primary post on the slave solenoid (yel/red)

all you need to do to turn the starter over with the engine out of the boat is provide 12 volts to the primary post on the slave solenoid (yel/red) - you should just be follwing the engine side of the troubleshooting guide as the boat wiring has been taken out of the system

seeing as how you are getting a click from the slave solenoid it sounds as if you are jumpering it correctly, your issue is in the wiring OR you have a faulty component

I thought you had to have power to both the solinoid AND the starter motor. The starter motor is going to take big-amps. I dont know for sure on this...comments ?

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

The heavy cable from positive side of the battery goes directly to the starter. It will connect the rest of the system from there. Provided wiring hasn't been screwed up.
That heavy cable could/should be "red" or black with some kind of indication that it is in fact positive.

Take it away Dubs!!!

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

I apologize, Yes I looked at the link and did the testing. I did not come up with a problem. I even took the starter off and took it and got it tested. Just engaging the starter only to make sure it is in fact engaging with the flywheel is when i noticed that it engages but does not turn the fly wheel. took the plugs out so there is no compression and it engages the flywheel adn it turns about a hair and that is it. Any ideas?

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

putting a socket and wratchet on the front damper nut turns the engine over with little to some resistance

*** with plugs out

Can you hear where the "clicking" is coming from?
