Re: 5.7 with 280 vp gear oil?

#1. I have filled a great number of these drives. Easiest way to get it right is to pump it up from the bottom thru the drain hole until it comes out the fill hole. Reinstall the fill plug and the dipstick and you won't loose much fluid when you disconnect the pump. Works every time the first time.

#2 Please tell me you have put a drive shaft bellows on it. If not, save LOTS of money for a drive rebuild, new bell housing shaft and bearings, new u-joint assembly and possibly a new bellhousing. Removing the engine, drive and bell housing.

I pump mine up through the drain hole as well. Just keep an eye on the dipstick. I've never removed the fill plug.

Please explain to me how do you manage to pump the oil in. If you turn the drive sideways and fill through the drain plug, poured out of a bottle, there is no pressure to carry it up top? You guys lost me here.

Don, my unit looks nothing like that. I am guessing that the Seloc manual only specifies the hydraulic unit only, but confused me as the manual spoke of the electro-magnetic unit and still speaks of hydraulic fluid.

Sorry guys, But that is the incorrect procedure for filling the 270/280 volvo drive units.

The oil needs to go down not up in this case according to volvo penta.;):)

And boy do you guys fill the drive up the hard way or what!:p I've always just pulled off the shift mechanism with the drive tilted back a few degrees, and filled it till the oil is just about to spill out of the bottom casing, Done.

So much easier in my opinion.:)

You need a hand pump and hose that is threaded to screw into the lower fill hole and a gallon container for the lubricant. Can't use tubes of grease. Go to any marine store and they can help you.

I just do it that way because thats the way Dad used to do it on our old 270. Might be wrong and more difficult but it's worked so far. I guess I don't find it that difficult. A bit messy however. I'll have to try the easy way next year and see what all the excitement is about.:)

I agree with Boat Tech and Don on this one, not that that my word has any meaning, but most drives these days require filling from the bottom up.
The old AQ drives are a lot easier, just remove the plug and fill the drive up, no need for hoses or pumps or anything like that, and when Volvo says that's the right way to do it, why then choose to do it the hard way, just because someone else does it that way one their new VP drive or old Merc drive does'nt make it right for your old VP drive ???

Thanks for all the input, as i got one day to get all this done before missing my opportunity to take the boat to salt water. I assume that this is the reason why my gears are slamming while shifting, is from lack of grease. Hence, no grease on the dipstick, although i did pour in 2 1/2 quarts in the upper unit on top of the bearings? Going to try to extra gas can that Cap mentioned. This should tell me the problem is in the tank or lines right if it runs right? One more thing, is the fuel filter the same as an automotive one? Wanting to know so i can pick one up at the auto parts store.

There should be a cleanable filter in the housing of your carb. Its just inside of the fuel line fitting in the carb. Remove the fuel line at the carb and remove the housing cover to remove and clean the filter.

#17 is the filter. Make sure not to lose the spring when taking it apart.

You may have additional filters that I am not aware of. Follow the lines from the tank to the carb.
