Re: '56 Evinrude Lark 30HP

Psiclown, Your thread come up when I google this motor a while ago. Cool project. Amazing someone took so much time to paint that thing black like that!

Yorab, I upload photos to Photobucket and the link to them. It's pretty easy to use.

I'm going to order an impeller and carb rebuild kit from here. Is there a difference in quality between the Sierra and Mallory brands?

Also, I can get the carb kit without the float, but not with it? Anyone know why?

I'm going to keep wiring simple and just do starter and choke buttons, choke to kill. Could someone direct me to what starter solenoid to use and a wire diagram for this setup?

Thanks

Here's the wiring diagram. Credit to F_R for this one.

Awesome job on the pain King! I'm wanting to pain my engine and was wondering how you stripped the original paint off. Was it with aircraft remover or something like it? Also was your cowl fiberglass like mine? Thanks and keep up the good work!

Thanks!

Mine is aluminum. The old paint was adhered very well, it was just very dull and chipped here and there. I sanded everything and then primed with etching primer. I think painting fiberglass might be a different beast, especially if the paint has micro cracks, but I'm not really sure.

I painted the red on the trim last night. Still have to do the gold, some touchup and then a clearcoat.

For us northern winter folk, these projects sure can help ease cabin fever!

Thanks! I used Rustoleum Midnight Black Metalic and Silver Metalic. There is flake in them but it tones down after a couple coats. They're great because the dry to the touch after just a few minutes so you can recoat right away. Found them both at a local homestore, they were sitting right next to each other. They were actually the only metalic ones they had. The Midnight Black came out a little darker than I thought but I like it.

The white is just white and red was cardinal red or something like that.

Nice, thanks. Are you still going to clear coat it?

Yep I'll clear coat it. I'm going to set it aside for a while and let all the paint cure hard, then clear it. At some point I'll start on lower unit too. I'll wait for that though until I do the impeller.

Re: '56 Evinrude Lark 30HP

Drained the gearcase, only a couple oz., or even just one, came out, which I expected because there has been obvious leakage somewhere down there over time. OIl is medium brown and clear.

Oily grime covers the prop and the area around it. The plug gaskets look ok, never saw fresh oil leaking, or even wettness, just the oily grime. There was a lot of crud packed around drain plug that fell loose when I took it out.

What are the odds the prop shaft is leaking? It spins freely and I see no play in it. Prop looks good, a few dings but no abvious major damage.

Or a slow leak around the drain plug?

I read about pressure testing, how would I do that? I'm quessing it has to be done on the engine because if I drop the lower part off(like when I change impeller), it opens up the whole thing, right?

The impeller sits above the LU when removed from the lower exhaust housing. I would suggest, as you thought, to have the LU pressure & vacuum tested before painting to save time & paint in the end. If you do not have a tester, you may have to take it to a shop.

The impeller can easily be changed without splitting the gear case.

Re: '56 Evinrude Lark 30HP

Where I live, there aren't many marinas and I wasn't sure who worked on outboards. I was trying to come up with a way to test the lower unit on my own but thought I'd check out the two marinas that are closest to me, which happen to be a few hundred yards from each other.

The first one said they don't touch anything older than a 90s. I told them I didn't need any work done, just the pressure test. Refered to manager, ok, will cost $64!

Call the other one, sure, bring it in. We'll do it free if you buy the part you need form us.

Needless to say I went to that one.

In an hour I had the LU off and to the shop.

There was a couple leaks so I bought all seals and impeller for the LU.

$42 total, more than I could get them from somewhere else I'm sure but the guy is very friendly and answered a lot of my questions. Plus I like to buy local when I can and I didn't have to wait for anything to come in, he had everything!

Anyway, I got the whole thing torn apart and found a lot of sludge inside. I dismantled every single piece and cleaned it. Fortunatly there wasn't any rust or corosion.

Unfortunatly I screwed up. Under the upper shaft seal there is a bushing. When I put the new upper shaft seal in I forgot to put the bushing back in so I had to destroy a brand new seal.

Not a big deal, it's cheap, but I was on my way to getting this back together today.

Oh well.

I'll post some shots of it later.

Luckily it was only the shaft seal and you did not have to crack the gearcase. Did you by chance replace the shift shaft o-ring??

Mas, I got the shift shaft o-ring, but I can't even beging to imagine how to replace it. It so far in there from both directions, and it's under a brass bushing. It seems like it would have been very hard to get in there in the first place.

I amazed at how simple these are, quite easy to take apart and rebuild, as long as you remember that danged uppper shaft bushing first!
