Timing is set by the points.

Have you checked compression yet?

Have you rechecked spark after resetting the points (with an air gap tester) ?

What is your starting procedure - are you turning the throttle to "start"?

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

points have to touch, and be clean, gapped to .020 at their widest open spot. ( look in the "top secret file " at the beginning of this forum)

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

The points "touch" until the rubbing block is pushed by the high-point on the cam (crankshaft). That's where you set the gap with the feeler gauge.

So; they are closed (touching) except for that brief interval where they are forced open by the cam.

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

the other end of the rocker is where the point is.your arrow is where the rocker rubs against the crankshaft. as the high spot on the crankshaft comes around the rocker arm is pushed and the other end with the contact backs off and makes a gap. see in the diagram "breaker points"

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

so the breaker points only touch when its at the high spot? and should be gaped .020 otherwise? should the rocker be rubbing the crankshaft at all times then too?

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

your main objective is that you set your point gap(using the adjustment screw) and that it touches at the right time because as soon as it touches, it will send a spark to the spark plug. that is simplified timing.

maybe im reading this wrong, but the points should be always closed until they get opened by the lobe on the points cam, ( usually where the keyway is located), thats where they should be gapped to .020. ( !!!plugs only fire when the points are open!!)
