Hey guys,
trying to change the lever on my gear shift, got the new parts but cannot figure out how to get the bottom part of the outboard so I can disconnect the rod so I can pull the rod up to switch the lever. I was told by the local Johnson BRP reps that I need to take the bottom off the outboard to disconnect the rod so I can pull it up to change the lever. Is this correct?
I have attached some pictures, one showing the lever on the rod with the powerhead off. The other is how far I can get the bottom dropped down.
Thank you in advance, and I did try to search but with the lack of knowledge of outboards I do not know the correct names of the parts to search.

Thanks again. IMG-20120801-00296.jpgIMG-20120801-00297.jpg

I'm not sure about everything that happened and your description, but in the first pic: when you separate the lower unit with the drive in reverse, you should be able to see a 3/8 nut on a coupler in there. Loosen that up and your shift linkage will come apart allowing you to drop the lower unit. It's a bit tricky getting it BACK together.

Re: 6HP Johnson shift lever change help

Just bought my first 6HP Evinrude. A 1968, but I haven't done a thing to it and I am not much help to you except to share a site that may well have the answer to your question. Look down nearer to the bottom. Best of luck. Rick.

I don't remember doing one of those, but can't you just remove #25 and remove the shifter handle?

#25 is what. Broke, I am trying to pull up #65 to change it.
So bonzoscott The shift linkage is what's is keeping this from dropping down? I do see the coupler in there, tried to use the slotted screw driver to get out but won't move. I will try and get a socket in there.
