71 and 72 - 18hp Evinrude Prop and other things...

Hi guys!

I bought two 18hp "Rudes this week after reading on this forum for the last couple of years about how good and dependable these motors are. One is a 1971... this is the one that is "running" with no prop installed... the other is a 1972. There are a couple of pieces missing on the parts motor; carb and throttle stuff and prop. I also have a box with an extra carb, starter (with bracket!) and water pump housing with impeller and plate... and a bag with nuts and bolts and jets and (I think dishwasher parts?!)...

I think you get the idea!

I picked these up for three reasons;

1 - The compression on both motors is 120psi on all cylinders!!
2 - LU oil was nice and metal fragment free!
3 - I talked the guy down from $350 to $250.

The runner wont stay started it coughs and dies... is was getting better the more it warmed up, but to me the water flow from the water pump was not enough... so I did not want to keep heating it up if it was not being properly cooled.... and my arm was killing me from pulling. (Hard to pull this bugger!!)

I went to a marina that was an official JohnnyRude dealer and thought I would pick up a few kits to get started on fixing the runner; Carb kit with float, water pump kit, LU seal kit and condensers and contacts.

They didn't have the kits. They wanted me to figure out all the part numbers of all the individual seal and other parts to make up the kits. I said thanks but no thanks! I will just order it all off of iBoats.com!!

One thing the guy did tell me though (And it is the point of this post!!) my prop was worth big money. ???

It is solid brass. The guy said that it was a High Speed prop of some kind. It is nicked and dented here and there.... but I was wondering if any one knows what this guy was talking about. Are they rare, sought after or expensive compared to the aluminum props?

I will certainly be posting more questions (hopefully more to the point quicker!!) and perhaps just making an entire thread on the revival and rebuild of the 71. I will need *some* hand holding!

Is it a two-blade prop? Just being brass alone doesn't make it a "speed" prop. Anyway, "speed" prop is a loose term. But high performance props for light fast boats would have two blades---the reason for my question.

He also called it something else... like a Reaper... or something kind of cool sounding that I cant quite remember.

+ sparkplug wire, boots, the little springy sparkplug socket, coils, fuel hose and the little washers for the LU fill plugs would all come in handy. And a new pullrope too. Maybe an extra plastic pawl for the pullstart.

Once you get it refurbished, there isn't much pulling to it.

Re: 71 and 72 - 18hp Evinrude Prop and other things...

Here is my full list of what I am going to do to this motor:

Phase One:

Carb rebuild
LU seals
Water pump rebuild
Condensers
Coils
Points
Prop rebuild
New fuel lines all around
Pull cord
(On moonfish's advice) spark plug wires and boots

Phase Two:

*Fuel pump rebuild*
Paint top and bottom
New decals
Install the electric start and the solenoid from the parts motor.

* I cant find a rebuild kit any where... any one know where to source this?

The prop was probably made by Michigan Wheel. It's like any prop, it hase to work with the way you are set up.

There are a few threads about the fuel pumps. My '68 was a the particular one they don't recommend rebuilding and if needed you can search on here you'll find a thread showing the part number of a new one that will work. I think some of the vintage outboard sites had a more expensive replacement, maybe $80 or so but there's a cheaper one that will work.

Get some prop drive pins and a couple cotter keys when you're shopping. And the O-rings for the fuel fitting if you're reusing.

that is a Michigan propeller, and it looks like a coloring agent was added to the aluminum to make it have the appearance of a bronze propeller. I sold one just like yours in similar condition for $13 on ebay, so don't get your hopes up. Maybe take it to your J/E dealer and offer it to them for $50 since they think it's so special

I seriously doubt that it is aluminum. I am no metallurgist... but I have never seen aluminum that heavy.

Re: 71 and 72 - 18hp Evinrude Prop and other things...

Just popped it off the LU...

Good eye to those who said Michigan. Clearly stamped.

But I am not convinced that it is colored aluminum. This thing weighs a ton!! The gouges in it clearly show a nice brass color inside. I have an aluminum prop from a 15... given that it will be lighter, but this thing is at least twice as heavy.

It has PR 23 stamped adjacent to the Michigan stamp.

Oh well... Not claiming that I know what the heck this thing is... 'cause I clearly don't. But I do know what bronze looks and feels like. Heavy!

Thanks to all that have and will reply!

LOL!

Trade you for an aluminum prop that is in decent shape!

That is a brass, Michigan prop. Who came up with the colored aluminum nonsense?

I think like 9.5x11 was the biggest standard prop for the 18. If that one has more pitch, it'd be rare and sought for hydroplane boating for more speed @ max rpm's..
Yours is brass for sure by the weight. Never heard of 'colored aluminum'??

That is a general purpose prop, not a speed prop. The Johnson- Evenrude engine's were never a contender is the racing field of engine's. OMC later came out with the 25SS, but that was a whole different engine.

Hey Craig, I just sent you an email.

You can get the parts at Laurentian Marine on Mac street off Hunt Club. And you can order on line at www.marinemanifold.com from BC.

Your plan is excellent. If you do all that stuff, it'll be like you have a brand new 18 hp. Those are excellent, strong outboards.

Here is my full list of what I am going to do to this motor:

Phase One:

Carb rebuild
LU seals
Water pump rebuild
Condensers
Coils
Points
Prop rebuild

Phase Two:

@CATransplant
Thanks for the endorsement!! Means a lot coming from you. I have followed many of your posts on this board and feel like I know you to an extent! Thanks!

@samo_ott
Thanks for the Canadian parts sources! I will e-mail you soon!

@ R.Johnson, kbait, restornator, moonfish and F_R:
Thanks for all the input and thoughts on the prop. You guys rock! It is amazing how many helpful people are on this board. I am still not exactly certain what I have here with this prop. I know it will have to be rebuilt one way or the other... I just don't know if it would be especially useful to me. If I can flip it into another new or newish prop and a few bucks I will probably jump on it. I don't even know what pitch it is and what advantages there are to having such a prop.

I will try to update this thread as much as possible to keep this rebuild/restore project up to date for any one else who wants to do the same thing; rebuild an 18hp from top to bottom.

Re: 71 and 72 - 18hp Evinrude Prop and other things...

This is a rebuild thread... so I will start with a few pics.

This is the runner... a '71. (I put the brass prop on just for fun!)

71rude.jpg

Here is the carb. I find that it looks a little odd... that soup strainer in the front if it... I suppose that is some sort of air filter.
71rudecarb.jpg

Here are a couple of things that I am not so sure about;

First this green thing under the fly wheel on the parts motor is not found on the 71 runner.
72rudeflyunder.jpg

This is what the same place on the runner looks like;
71rudeflyunder.jpg

Is one right and one wrong? Could it just be a difference in the model years?

One other thing... this black plastic thing looks like a stopper of some kind. I am guessing that it is so you cant start the motor under certain conditions... it is not attached to anything... I would be curious to know what is missing to make this work.

71rudestopper.jpg

Back to the parts motor... the thing that the solenoid is wired to... is that a stator? Are those used for generator??

72rudesolstator.jpg

More updates to come as the parts come in.

Any answers to my questions would be appreciated!!
