Hi guys!
I bought two 18hp "Rudes this week after reading on this forum for the last couple of years about how good and dependable these motors are. One is a 1971... this is the one that is "running" with no prop installed... the other is a 1972. There are a couple of pieces missing on the parts motor; carb and throttle stuff and prop. I also have a box with an extra carb, starter (with bracket!) and water pump housing with impeller and plate... and a bag with nuts and bolts and jets and (I think dishwasher parts?!)...
I think you get the idea!
I picked these up for three reasons;
1 - The compression on both motors is 120psi on all cylinders!!
2 - LU oil was nice and metal fragment free!
3 - I talked the guy down from $350 to $250.
The runner wont stay started it coughs and dies... is was getting better the more it warmed up, but to me the water flow from the water pump was not enough... so I did not want to keep heating it up if it was not being properly cooled.... and my arm was killing me from pulling. (Hard to pull this bugger!!)
I went to a marina that was an official JohnnyRude dealer and thought I would pick up a few kits to get started on fixing the runner; Carb kit with float, water pump kit, LU seal kit and condensers and contacts.
They didn't have the kits. They wanted me to figure out all the part numbers of all the individual seal and other parts to make up the kits. I said thanks but no thanks! I will just order it all off of iBoats.com!!
One thing the guy did tell me though (And it is the point of this post!!) my prop was worth big money. ???
It is solid brass. The guy said that it was a High Speed prop of some kind. It is nicked and dented here and there.... but I was wondering if any one knows what this guy was talking about. Are they rare, sought after or expensive compared to the aluminum props?
I will certainly be posting more questions (hopefully more to the point quicker!!) and perhaps just making an entire thread on the revival and rebuild of the 71. I will need *some* hand holding!
