Current project is a '72 GT160, a hull I have had previously. This one had a rotten transom and stringers although it was in great shape otherwise. Much better than the one I had before. Low investment so far, and I'm currently in the process of grinding the bare hull in preparation for fiberglass.

Powerplant will be this Merc V6, also a project as it has low compression.

Found some time today to dismantle it and inspect the pistons. Good news is one piston was in great shape :)

It has been overheated, or run lean, or both. 6 new pistons and I should be good to go. Crank and con-rods look good. Cylinders may need a small re-bore, not sure yet.

Procrastination & weather has slowed the hull grinding, but I'm on the home stretch.

Question: Can I safely run a 240v electric shop heater when using polyester resin? My garage is attached to the house, and I'm not too keen on blowing myself or my family up!

I really like that hull. The rebuilt 150 will be perfect for it.

your electric heater should be fine as it doesn't produce sparks or open flame. you still need some fresh air for you though.

Ayuh,... Polyester fumes aren't nearly that volatile,...

A fan, blowin' Outa the garage, while glassin', will help yer Breathin' though,...

Re: '72 Glastron GT160

Thanks, I wasn't sure how volatile it was. Minimum air temp to aim for, 65 degrees?

My shop heater is pretty simple. Takes forever to heat up, but it reaches comfortable levels eventually.

I do have a North half mask respirator to fend off those fumes :)

Gotta love the looks of those GT's...Hope you can grind outside? Just sanding gelcoat in my garage has everything covered with dust...

Re: '72 Glastron GT160

im gonna follow along for your rebuild your hull looks nearly identical to mine except mine is a vangaurd banshee. apparently it was a very similar mold

your center stringer looks alot taller than mine was i measure the fiberglass on mine since there wasnt much left of the stringers and my center was about 5 inches and outter stringers i think went inch and half to two inches near the transom

my stringers also didnt go all the way to transom but i also didnt have a bench at the back

also your transom outer skin is alot different than mine

but up front looks almost identical

good looking build so far and cool boat

Hey Banshee, your boat looks to be a copy or similar to the Glastron GT-150. I believe Tempest and Sunray also made similar hulls in that era.

Did you end up using Noah's for you fiberglass supplies? I'm looking for options here locally (Niagara region).

I knew the 150 was an almost exact copy but i was intrigued how similar a 160 is as well

I wheel the hull outside to grind, but that dust still gets all over the garage. It is a messy job for sure.

High temperature of 3C this week, brrr

Re: '72 Glastron GT160

Thanks Arch,

I wish I had your warmer weather, I'd be much further along, it is snowing here today. The hull is 75% done the grinding process. I have two grinding errors in outer hull chine, one of which was a previous repair that was weak to start with (shown below).

Hopefully I don't blow myself up when I am glassing. Will be looking for a local resin and glass supplier shortly.

Re: '72 Glastron GT160

I'll see if we can come up with some warmer weather for you ADM, but at the moment we are a bit chilly, todays high is around freezing. I'm just hoping we don't have the 30 mile per hour winds to go with it again. We are going to thaw out this weekend, hopefully things warm up for you too!

Looks like you are still making progress! You should be good on the glassing, I didn't have any issues other than big layups (like the entire deck). The fumes can get pretty strong on big layups. I did most of my large layups in the summer with the doors open, but I did a lot of glass in the winter. I used propane heat, so I would just turn off the heat while I was laying it up, then if the fumes got too bad I would open up the door for some fresh air after it kicked off. You should be good with the electric heat, do you have any pilot lights or open flames? You might want to put them out if you are doing a lot of glassing. The fumes don't seem to be very volatile, but it never hurts to error on the side of caution!

Thanks Craig. Don't feel too bad, working in cold weather with cold tools sucks :) I haven't been progressing very quickly either.

Good news is my 2-6" dial indicator bore gauge showed up. I think I should be able to hone these cylinders after having been reviewing them for a while now.

Next fair weather day with sunshine, I'll be back on the grinder for the home stretch.

Chris,
Sorry, I don't want to rebuild your CVX :) , but would absolutely like to come see it sometime. I've done a lot of boating on the Trent-Severn, and I can see you're from up that way. Always looking for new places to visit. Did you ever get a V6 hung on your CVX20 yet?
