Hi all,

Here's how this all started. About a month ago, I just so happened to walk out the front door of the house and saw the neighbour outside in his driveway. Upon having some neighbourly chat, I saw the bow of a boat poking out of his carport. I asked if he was going to get it on the water, but he said no, she needed some work and he already had a bayliner Capri, and that he just wanted it out of his carport.

Now, me being who I am, became interested immediately and started to research the Internet. This is when I found this incredible forum, and started to read and watch. Particularly trooper, gwpsr, friscoboater, tbone, and zool. After arming myself with information, and gaining confidence, I convinced my father in law, and my sister's bf (who I will intro later) to take on this project with me, so that we can all enjoy this with our young families.

I assured these guys that we would not be alone in this project, that there is a large community right here that we can receive guidance from, and pass our skills onto others that may need help from time to time.

So, without further adeaux, here she is:

More to follow soon

Zool, one of the side windshields was broken, so the po removed the other one for a template. The new one came with the boat, along with a bunch of other goodies.

Here are some other pics of work that needs to get done:

Some glass and gel coat repair on keel

Some gel coat repair here and there

And the big one: the frost plugs on port and starboard of the block are popped, but no evidence of cracking on the exterior of the block. I'll have to test run it after replacing the plugs....crossing my fingers.

Re: 75 reinell v1901 project "kraken"

So after hauling the boat to its new home at dad's shop, we were finally able to do some brainstorming over the last couple of weeks on how the work will progress, timeline, and some particulars on paint scheme and overall desired look.

Today dad and I removed the mercruiser 888 outdrive, and found about a cup of water in the bellows. I'm wondering if this is normal, or is there possibly a leak in the bellow. The universal joints were wet, but still looked, and felt brand new.
We got the engine mounts unbolted, and all the cables and hoses removed. We were just about to hoist the engine with the tractor bucket, when the admiral and crew loaded up to head home, so the kraken will have to wait till next days off.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to flip the hull? As soon as the engine, gimble housing, windshield, and rails are removed, we are going to flip this sucker to start the hull repairs.

Nice boat! It will be even nicer when you get it done. Have you looked for water damage below deck? If it was me and there is damage...I'd start with the insides first...No experience, but I don't think there should be any water in the gimble...depending how it got in there and how long could have done some damage to the transom.

I'll tag along... looks like a fun project!

I was going to say, the bottom looks about like mine did, except I had my of the dings from rocking on a rock bar or something similar...

Thanks troop, I'll have to do some drilling once the engine is pulled...p.o. That replaced the deck said that the foam and stringers were good, but I'll have to double check just for peace of mind.

I would do the full interior assessment before flipping. Seems the outside is the last area and least costly when sizing up your restore project. Stringers, transom, floors, engine, out drive all need to be inspected and costed out and eventually fixed. Heck if you need a new power plant and out drive, stringers and transom and floor, you may reconsider due to cost. But that's your call. That boat has been beat hard at some point in it's life, but the bottom of the hull is really the smallest part of your concern(s).

Re: 75 reinell v1901 project "kraken"

So here is a rundown of the "stuff" that the boat came with as extras for the build:

2 gal. Resin
10 sq ft. CSM
10 sq ft. 1401
Enough grey carpet to do 2 boats
New seats, that are grey with an aqua blue stripe
Roll of grey upholstry to do trims
Instrument cluster out of another boat, chrome bezels, aluminum faces, with aqua highlights (sorry, no pic)
Brand new marine grade deep cycle battery (canadian tire nautilus)

Now, I can see that a new deck was installed properly, and has one coat of glass on it.
The po gave me a receipt from a local marina that shows that in 2006, the engine was totally redone with a brand new block, gimbal ring, bearing, bellows, shift cable, and all the other things that go with it. The boat has not seen water since the marina work was completed.

Today it was finally some nice weather so I got out to do some work:

Here she is at the new home

Dad trying out the new name

Here's the outdrive with the rust I was talking about...I'll have to check out the bellows closely

Re: 75 reinell v1901 project "kraken"

Hello all, now that it is officially winter up here in the great white north, I'm stuck indoors. Not a problem though. There is still other work that I can do to the boat. I decided to take a crack at restoring the instrument cluster that came as a bonus with the boat.

I did a little research on the instruments, and they are stewart warner from the '60s

Before

After.
I'm in the process of doing them all now. I'll post some pics of the complete set.

Re: 75 reinell v1901 project "kraken"

Happy thanksgiving to my neighbours to the south. Well, today was a pretty productive day. After a good 10 hour mine rescue practice, I got to building the bench test unit to check the function of the gauges.
Materials list:
8 - d cell batteries
1 - old citizen portable radio
Electrical tape
Multimeter
Dixie cup

Step 1: tear apart old radio and salvage potentiometer ( volume control), and bits of wire.
Step 2: connected D cell batteries in series to form 2 - 6 volt cells

Step 3: connected 6 volt cells in series to make 12 volts
