Re: 77 Starcraft Holiday 18 i/o - rebuild with pics galore

I'm probably just too chicken to take her out on the water so I'm looking for other things to do. As long as it sits in the driveway and looks good then all is well but I'm pretty sure it was meant to float :)

I'll pickup some leaf springs this week so when it's time to reassemble it's a one shot deal. With my luck I'll be heading out and the trailer will come apart and it'll launch into the trees.

Just about time to increase the insurance on the boat :)

The weather is crap here for the next couple of days so hopefully I can get the boat up on some tires in the next while for something to do.

I love the lines of that boat. I think that's what drew me to my older boat. Good luck and I'll be checking in to see it "Splashed!"

Just catching up on your thread again, maybe it was the mention of beer that lured me back.

Noticed your sterio and cover is the same I have in the SS. Thats a great spot for it. Its all looking great!!!!

The stereo is awesome but I wish the back end of the stereo had more support. I may hook up some metal strapping as I don't know how much she'll bounce on some big waves.

Me too on the lines of the boat and the finally on the water part :)

You've got a nice big cool boat. I'm hoping to buy one eventually from someone on this forum who overdid it on the rebuild :)

Hey sprint, what did ya decide on you're dash, sticking with the factory plastic? Its gonna be my next hurdle, my plastic is too warped and cracked to reuse.

Me too on the rough plastic. I'd like to mock up something out of wood to get the exact dimensions and see if I can get something bent out of aluminum.

I may leave it for a season or so and then tear it apart to mock it up. That's the last big sticking point for me before I call it finally finished. It would be great if both the console and glove box area was done the same way so it looks like it was always there.

The POR15 whitecote is in and a new Teleflex sl3 shifter is on it's way from ebay. I don't want to pull the side panel at a later date to fix the shifter so it's a one shot deal.

I'll post some pics of the paint cans and instructions as it's been raining like crazy here for days and can't get anything else done.

Sandblasting soon I hope...

Nothing like taking a couple month project and dragging it out for years. I'm pacing myself I guess.

I jacked the trailer up and put it on axle stands as I need new fenders and didn't like the looks of the leaf springs. It's lucky I made it home with the boat on my 24 hour journey at 80 mph when I picked it up as there was a broken bolt on the leaf spring hangers. One good bump and she would have hopped off and went for a ride.

I pulled the fender/hanger assembly and will have it welded up with new shackles, and dropped the axle and leaf springs. Everything will will be replaced with new hardware and painted so she should be as good as new...eventually.

Hope your neck is not sore as you had to crank your neck to see the pics.

Here's some pics of the bolt on fender assembly. Kind of a cool idea as it means no welding to the frame. Only one snag as some jackhole welded the piece that the leaf spring bolts to through the assembly into the frame. I'll try to cut it off tomorrow and get it all fixed up and ready for paint.

The last pics os of the assembly still hanging onto the frame by a small piece of weld.

What do you guys think is the best nuts/bolts. Should I go grade 8 if I can find something coated. I'm looking for something better than was there to start.

Man, you need her to be in the water sprint! The trailer grind, bummer buddy.

Yah, I go with grade 8 whenever I can for trailer stuff.

For some reason I think I remember seeing that the shear strength on a grade 5 bolt is the same as a grade 8 or really, really, close anyway. Grade 5 is all you need unless you want to spend the extra money. That's o.k. too, I come from that school. I re-did my last trailer with 18-8 stainlesss and got rid of the running rust forever. That was a lot more expensive then a touch up spray can but for some reason you never see that rust run until you're struttin your stuff and braggin. LOL

Hey guys. Got a bit more done. Princess Auto (Harbor Freight) equivalent had the trailer hardware kit with shackles bolts, etc for 14.99 on sale so I picked it up. Heavy grade metal and bolts to match but I will post pics later.

http://www.princessauto.com/trailer/trailer/trailer/axle-components/2080025-single-axle-leaf-spring-hanger-kit

Here's some shots of the swing away trailer extension, axle and other assorted pieces pulled off and ground down to the bare metal with a wire wheel. I also sprayed it with Metal Ready which etches it with a phosphoric acid compound. All ready to paint those pieces but the weather turned.

The rest of the trailer will have to wait until I can get the new leaf springs in place and leave the boat up on some tires. I like how the metal is thick like some old Soviet tank trailer.

These old boats are tanks and Kev proved it. That had to be an eye opener all right. I tend to drive fast already so if I launched it I would have put my foot into and and claimed it stolen :)

The new shifter came in today but it looks rain for the next week.

I also picked up new leaf springs, fenders, etc and dropped the fender assembly off to be welded. Lots of pics to come in the next couple of days.

I picked up the welded up fender brackets with all new hardware. Everything has been welded up and beefed up with brackets so I can stand on them and turned out great. I'll post pics in the next day or so as I'm leaving for vacation for the next month :)

I picked up a Scotty anchor lock and some more odds and ends when I was in Portland last week. There is a great place called Fishermans Marine that has everything and a huge inventory.

I also painted some of the parts that I pulled so that heavy metal trailer does not rust. I'm starting to appreciate how beefy it was built. Can't wait to get back at it when I get back and take her out for a maiden voyage to work out any bugs.

Here's some of the pics for now. The POR15 Whitecote was slow to setup and was still soft the next day.
