Re: 77 Starcraft Holiday 18 i/o - rebuild with pics galore

"The only slight inconvenience is finding some of the older parts like the rub rail. Has anyone seen anything like this in their travels? It's 1 inch inside the rail and the part that extrudes is 3/4 of an inch."

Great work, good pics and thorough detailed info. I have read elsewhere on this forum that Starcraft still sells the older original vinyl rub rail. I have not confirmed this. The note said that you have to order it through your local Starcraft dealer. Worth a try as, like you, I have not been able to find an exact profile replacement. If I can't find the exact stuff I will live with my cleaned up rub rails.

I got the hardware off the rear decking and did some more sanding. I also used the stripper wheel to remove some paint off the rivets on the dull as it was pretty easy on the aluminum.

I also epoxied some aluminum strips on the gas tank to keep it from getting rubbed again by the rear seat boxes.

Here's some shot of the rear deck aear and some of the hardware I pulled off. I had no idea the wood at the top was in such bad shape with dry rot.

There's also some shots of the housing (blue) that hold the vent hoses.

More shots including the blower motor.

There are also some metal strips that Durabak sent to me with the requested paint colors. The stuff is as tough as hell from what I can see and they sent it to me in what seems like a day. It should be a pleasure dealing with them though the stuff is expensive. It looks like it will be well worth it though...make sure to buy the uv resistant version.

Hey Bananbert

Let me know if you find your rub rails out there. I'll let you know what I come up with as well.

Check it out. I'm actually getting somewhere. Nothing like 10 hours of sanding and grinding will do. I also filled some screw holes in Starbrite Aluminum epoxy putty.

Tomorrow is the self etching primer and 3 coats of ne2000 on the bottom...with any luck.

Here's some pics of the boat after being lifted on the *** end with the forklift to get ready for tomorrow.

Many thanks to Ideal Tile and the grinding wheel who were both easy on the tinny hull.

I did the bottom in zinc chromate after more grinding, masking and wiping the hull down prior to in the Interlux 202.

One quart of the Interlux Vinyl wash zinc chromate did the bottom thinned 25%. It was close though...to the last drop.

I kind of like the way it looks without the windshield...like a cigarette boat.

Very nice work. I am new to this site and I have enjoyed reading all the post from everyone. I plan on starting my own total restoration of an 88 Glasstream in the near future myself. With the kind of help you get from this site I may even be able to do as well as you. Good luck with the rest and I'll be reading.
Thanks

You are moving along nicely and its looking great. Be sure to let us know how the Durabak goes down for you. (I've picked my color but want to be sure the application won't be a pain!:D)

Thanks guys... I'll be following your threads too. Odds are mine will slow down in the next month or so as snow flies. It'll give me more time to see what you guys are up to. If I lived a little further south I migh actually be able to get this thing done at some point.

I got a couple of coats of primer down today. It was hot and I had to thin it a bit as it was turning to goop to quick. Once I got it watered down a bit with the Interlux 2316N it rolled nicely with foam roller I cut down.

I'm bagged though as it took me all day to hit every rivet and seam as well. This stuff is epoxy so I wanted to make sure it was going to coat anything that could ever leak.

I think I did 10 hours on Friday, 6-7 hours on Sat and another 6 or so today.

And more...

Stir this stuff like crazy as all the thick goop is in the bottom of the can.

Hey Appaloosa2...

I was looking at your pics and I should've started with the transom. I could have splashed this thing instead of always working on it. If anyone would have said it was this much work I definately would have shot the clear on it and called it a day :)

Your boat looks solid.

The VC performance epoxy is like painting with milk. I had to change roller types to get around some of the ridges as it was leaving buildup on the roller lines. One two quarts kit did the whole bottom but thin in some spots.

Tomorrow is coats 3 and 4 with any luck... And more pics...

Re: 77 Starcraft Holiday 18 i/o - rebuild with pics galore

The weather has gotten kinda cold at night and I've lost my steam on the painting.

I'll be taking the boat in to get the topside painted this week sometime. At least I can get the hardware bolted back on before the snow flies.

I will be building my seat boxes and engine cover over the next couple of days and drop the boat off for the interior to get upholstered.

Here's some pics before she goes in...
