Sorry to hear about all the problems your having. Seems like they come in bunches'

I would be careful about the HF welders. They don't have enough amps to penetrate 1/8" metal.
If you do decide to buy one, get the highest amps they have in the stick welder.
HD and Lowes also sell a nice stick welder. There in the $200.00 plus range and 220 volt.
HF sells the wire feed welders and you need to get the highest amps also.
I don't think you will like the welders at HF.

I 100000000% agree with Decker on the HF welders. I LOVE HF but NOT their Welders. I'd check CL they have some deals on there sometimes.

Yep, stay away from those welders. You need to have enough amps to get through thick metal, and the thicker you have, the more expensive the welder. Mine is the biggest 110 model from miller (did not have 220 in the garage when I bought it) and it worked great on the glastron trailer.

I know the feeling of having to do "real chores" when i want to be working on the boat. Don't worry, you are coming along fine.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Tomorrow is another day.

Think I will just see if I can find someone with a welder then. Do not want to buy one just yet.

Hi Troop,

Just read 'bout the mower and trailer troubles...

Sorry I'm not in the hood, I could pop by with my Miller 35 and melt some steel for ya...

I wouldn't bother with a cheapo welder, call a couple mobile guys in the area and ask around...just make sure you take advantage of their time there and have any heavy welding chores ready for them, also some beer and snacks might get you a couple extra jobs at a discount...most mobile welders will have some scrap pieces of steel with them, but if you need anything specific, try and have it on hand...

Another option is to rent a Heavy Duty welder that is trailerable, but I have no idea what that could cost...

Hope you get the mower figured out...

Best of Luck,
GT

Just a thought, try local rental centers. You could rent one for the weekend.

Not so much boat rebuildin....

Got up early. Went out and pulled the rearend out of the lawn mower. Cleaned it real good. Everything looked fine, didn't tear into it, couldn't see a reason too.

Luckily my father, who has been keeping up with my progress remotely on this thread (in Ohio), saw what I had said I was going to do and gave me a call. He has been rebuilding mowers for quite a long time. Told me he has never had to tear a mower transmission apart. While we were talking I put my hand on the nut holding the drive pulley. To my amazement it was loose.

This is what I found...

So nothing open around here on a Sunday, will try and get a replacement tomorrow.

I spent the rest of the day grinding. Metal. All the rollers parts on rear of trailer that I am not reusing, took them all off. I think I might buy a paint gun and compressor to paint the trailer. Any suggestions on what to get? I am using WoG's paint recipe with Valspar implement paint/primer/hardener. Originally I had planned on just rolling it out, but thee amount of time it took to paint the upright that holds the winch changed my mind in a hurry.

Keep in mind I only have 120v going through a window, no outside outlets.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Hope you all had a great weekend and get things done this week if you have them planned.

Looks like you found the problem alright. Looking at that pulley, I am surprised it didn't come off.
Not sure about a compressor but HF does have some pretty good HVLP guns cheep.
Keep up the good work.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Hope everyone was able to stay safe this weekend. Lots of folks got hit with the bad weather this week.

Yesterday I did absolutely NOTHING!

Felt kinda bad so just laid around all day. I think my body was trying to tell me something.

Today however, I did get back on the trailer.

Little grinding, little wire brushing.

Hope I am not getting too carried away with this. I can't help myself. I start a small rust area and before I know it, I have all the paint removed.

Working my way up the left side...

And even further...

Tore the actuator apart. Pins were wore real bad. Brake cylinder was dry. This part here is bent and not working. This is an Atwood actuator. I did a little looking, haven't found parts for this particular model yet.

I'll be starting a week long vacation this Friday evening. Hope to be able to get a welder to borrow to fix the issues that need addressed with the welder. I had not planned on needing to replace the actuator. I hate to paint the trailer without getting this fixed too.

I also hope to get a cheap air compressor and a spray gun (HVLP) to paint the trailer.

Still looking to you all for suggestions on what to get in that department.

Have a god week all.

Hey Troop, Check the local rental Places for the rental price of a heavy duty trailerable compressor...not only can you get your painting done, but you could grab a sand blasting rig at the rental store, and blast all the rust on the trailer away in no time...you could probably get both the blasting and painting done in a day or two...might be worth the investment for all the time you'd save, and buying a good compressor can be saved for when you have more time to search out the deals on places like craigslist...sorry, there I go thinking out loud again...

PS- like has been mentioned, recharge your batteries with some quality Family time while you are taking the week off...Pays huge dividends!

Have a Great Week!

I love the work you did on that cuda! I have known two different people in my life that have had those. Friend from High school had one with the big bubble rear window. The other, a church friend..had like 5 ...this was back in the early to mid 70's He was always working on them. He had 3 sons and think they all ended up with cuda's too.

I was using the 4.5" grinder, so wasn't all that bad. I kept flipping the brush over so it would get a better 'bite'. Only problem I had was the wires would come flying out. I forgot my gloves once, had three hit me in a matter of minutes. Being on aspirin/blood thinners the little holes left behind bled for awhile...I put my gloves back on.

I may take a day to go do something with the wife. She has felt left out since I started this project.

The Purple HVLP gun @ HF will work fine. I bought his gun on eBay and Love it.

Compressor, you'll need at least 20 gallons and it will still cycle a lot. I bought a 5 hp 60 gallon Sears on CL for 250 used. Works Great. Keep your eyes open for one of them.

Thanks for the help woody. I looked for purple at HF and found 4 different ones :( so I got confused..:)

I was googling those this weekend. Wish they had a price list. They look expensive, so imagine they would want to keep my right kidney for collateral. I agree with waiting to find a better deal down the road. I actually hate to buy one without anywhere to keep it too.

Yeah those compressors cost upwards of three grand...

Decent rental places will get about 40-60 a day for one of those HD gas powered compressors, or about 250 bucks for 8 days...pick up Saturday...return the following Saturday...best thing about them is they put out all the CFM's you could want for as long as you need it...

The sand blaster should only run about 15-20 dollars per day and you can buy the blasting media from them, but check prices, cause you could find the media cheaper elsewhere...you will use and lose 99% of the media, unless you put down some plastic tarps on the ground to recover most of it, but this is one of those situations where you get what you pay for...good quality media will clean faster and do the least amount of damage to the surface...call around a couple of sandblasting shops and ask what the best media is for your trailer...

And make sure that as soon as the trailer is ready for paint, you clean it real good and get a good self-etching primer/sealer on ASAP, or it will start rusting overnight...

As Far as collateral, I would plan on a kidney, an elbow, and maybe a foot...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

OK,

So I have been looking for somewhere local to get resin. I was not having any luck. Found places that would buy it elsewhere and have it shipped in, didn't save me anything though.

Well last night I found a place pretty close...

ok REAL close....

2.5 miles from the house!

The price will save me hazmat and shipping fees.

So while not a huge savings...it is just that, a savings.

So I am pretty excited about it.

I have not checked the place out in person yet. I guess I need to make sure the guy includes the hardener and is not outdated. Shelf life is 3 months for buckets I think. What about drums? I also need to make sure it is the right type of poly. Looks like he uses it for tubs, porta potties etc...

Way too high on mats and cloth (3x to 4x), so I will get those elsewhere.

GT,

I found a few places to rent equipment, not a whole lot of choices, seeing that I live in the middle of nowhere....

Compressor to run off gas, all the CFM's I will need and more for ~60 /day.

No luck on blasters though. I may think about HF for that. Though I recall trying to use one of those 15 yrs or so ago and had issues. Probably low CFMs and wet sand.
