Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Managed to get a little done today.

Removed the screws I used to hold the transom wood together during gluing. Cut to rough size so it will be easier to handle come tomorrow. That Titebond 3 really holds well. I couldn't begin to tear the scrap pieces apart.

Put a power-strip and some screw jars on the work bench too.

Made a scribe so I can mark the stringers and bulkheads tomorrow.
Picked up a few goodies too. Paint tray and liners, Adhesive rollers, Gallon of Acetone and a few more clamps. The wife got me a cheap mixer at the $1 store, for resin mixing.

Tomorrow should be a dry day.....

I heard cake & came running:eek:

If you can stand it, wear 3pairs of gloves all at once. Peel a left or right off as you get resin on them. Depending on glove size, you might get 4pairs on all at once. As you peel them off, they'll be inside out, so just drop them over the side or well away from the work area.

Might use an extra couple pairs every poly session, but glove changes go so much quicker. Esp w/ resin in the pot kicking or getting another batch of resin mixed to finish a layup....

Can't have enough containers for mixing resin on hand either.

Yes I agree that is a good idea with the multilayers of gloves.

Thanks bear, I have been admiring your work, you do some awesome work. I really like the electrical work you did on "Jackson Lee". I will be using that as a template for the redo on mine.

Sorry if I missed it, but are you going to hang the glass on the back of the bench? That looks so much better than my saw horses and plywood bench.

Yikes, Bear you re-wired the dog? That's a video series I'd watch....

Frisco, I think he built a 2nd rack for the glass rolls. That much weight, high, might be a bit much & tippy. But, yeah we all have workbench envy:cool:

I like the glass rack & high counter (builder PMC?, can't remember where I saw it) to roll the bucket over to pour out the spout 'smoothly' & easily, but the pumps are great too....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I have a bit of a situation. I was gettng prepared to mark out the bulkheads and found that the wood is not tall enough. When i had cut out the wood for stringers and bulkheads i had figured that they would be no more than 12" tall. Well they are going to need to be 14" and 17". I cut the stringer material 10" Wide and will be cut down to almost 8" at their tallest. Wish i had made them 9" now, would have given me an extra 3" on the bulkhead strip. Now do i go pay $42 for a whole sheet, or figure out a way to stretch the pieces i have? By the time i put a few layers of glass on the bottom of hull the amount i need will be less, but not enough. I will try and figure something out and post results later this evening, burning daylight.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I'd probably get the extra sheet for $42. You could stagger some 10" pcs together & rip a fill in pc for either side. Glue it all up & wait for it to dry. But now you've got twice the lumber in each bulkhead & extra glue. Not a bunch of weight, but extra weight too.

For $42, I would lean towards a new sheet. Trade the drive time to get it, for the time to assemble and to 'stretch' the ply pcs you have already cut, and a few dollars for the extra glue.

All you got left is the price of the sheet, the weight, and the time the assembly will take to dry. <<-- Is this worth $42? To get another sheet, order? Or on hand at HD/Lowes?

Can you use the existing 10" pcs anywhere else on the boat, or in the garage? Do you need a whole 4X8 sheet for bulkheads? You might find a damaged sheet that is <$42.

Ya, I think you are right JB. I almost had myself convinced to try and salvage what I had. I will just get a new board and be confident that it done right.

Cleared a spot for the workbench out in the shed.

This is how I was doing the transfer of the shape to the bulkheads. Well...until I realised my stock was too short...doh!
I was clamping the bulkhead to the 2 vertical pieces. The lower horizontal piece is real straight and gives me the deck height. I wish I had went with something with a little more heft to it. These fir strips were kinda bouncy.

To answer your question Frisco....Here is what I will be putting my glass on. Once I get the iron pipe and holes drilled for it. Figured I would wait till the glass is in before getting the pipe, so I know it will fit.

I hope everyone had a productive weekend and has a wonderful week ahead!
