Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I didn't much done today, hurt my back this weekend....again. Got to learn to lift with my legs. Not too bad just stiff, decided to give it a rest this evening.

I did make a partial order on my materials. I had enough saved up to get all I need except the 1708, CSM, Resin, Acetone and 2PF, extra MEKP and some Styrene.

So what did I get?

Bubble rollers
Cabosil, Glass bubbles and 1/4" CSM for making PB
Mixing cups 1qt and 2.5 qt
Mixing Sticks
Graduated cups and Measure-matic
Wax

Did I miss anything I will need? I really need to figure out out how much glass I will need.

Have a good week all.

Have a good week all.

I been using his materials list for you or sp, cant recall which one...as a reference. If I guess I'd say 30 yds csm and 20 of 1708. Somewhere around 15 - 20 gals of resin.

Edit: it was a post by woody on bear_cuda's Imperial thread.

 That's going to be pricey..... No chance to find it locally?

Well, your hull is bigger in every dimension then mine... longer, taller sides, wider. For mine, I figured it was better to sit on it & wait to order it all at once, at least then I'll get 95% of what I need all on 1 pallet & maybe save a little on the shipping. It's killing me from Florida. 33% of total...

Still cheaper then buying a new boat that has less character, less work to get in the water, less of my blood/sweat/tears.... Still rather go this way...

Thanks Decker and Woody. I have seen both of these, in passing. I have read so much since november I get lost trying to recall where and when. I hope you are right Wood, that is about half the clothe I was estimating, which means half the cost.

SWEET!

When you do get your materials and start to glass. You probably will not start out using 4 yards of glass at one time.
When using the formula 1 gal resin = 4 sq yards, you may want to break that down alittle more. 1 quart resin = 1 sq yard. That is not exactly right in the break down but if you keep track of the glass you start with and how much resin you used it will help you learn to not over resin the glass. It is very easy to use to much resin and get a weak lamination.
It also takes a little bit of time for the glass to turn clear and this makes me want to add more resin.

Good points Decker. I can only remember using fiberglass one time in my life. Filled a hole in a fender. I'm sure I over satirated it then. I will try my best to not go too heavy on this project.

Speaking of heavy...I decided to make another stand, just to hold the glass, separate from my work bench. Will look like one of the gantrys on a much smaller scale. The only dowels I could find are 48". I had planned on getting 50" cloth/csm when the time came. Figured I might get a few more pieces that way. Also it will make covering the deck go much faster. What is the norm around here, going with 50" or 38"?

I also plan on adding shelving to the top of the work bench for mixing cups, fillers , you know all the light weight stuff. And.....

I found some hardboard to cover the work surface. Should get that on this week. Have to cut it out first then screw it down.

I tell ya this is fun...

Galv or black plumbing pipe. Cheapest largest diameter pipe I could come up w/.....

You used to be able to get it cut to length & threaded when you bought it, and use the pipe end caps on each end as 'keepers' to prevent pipe from pulling out of 2X4 hole.

That is a good idea jb, I'll see if I can locate some.

I am using the 50" and like it very well.

JB hit the nail dead on the head with the black pipe. I had some old drill stem pipe that I used when I built my fence. It worked out good for me.

Your parts list is good... for a start :). I used about 8 gallons of Cabosil because I used it for a lot of adhesive, and fillet material. If you use a lot of PL you will use less, but it goes quick.

Also on the mixing buckets... Get LOTS! The resin will melt some as it heats up, and after about two mixings the plastic gets brittle and cracks when you try and clean it.

The fiberglass roller did not work very well for me, and i rested to just using short nap disposable rollers. The fiberglass roller was a PITA to keep clean, and would never work when I needed it to.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Deckers advice about waiting for the glass to "Clear" and not using too much resin is Spot On. IMHO #1 issue with beginner glassers is using too much resin. Also one of the reasons people have problems with the glass roller. Patience is a virtue. To much resin and rolling to soon. Use a Short nap roller like Frisco says to rollout the resin first then lay the mat and then use the glass roller to roll in down into the resin. Add resin to the spots that need it but don't flood it on. Roll it out a bit with the short nap roller. Go easy on the resin and like Decker says, at first do 1/2 quart batches at a time so you don't have to rush. Once you begin to get a "Feel" for it you can increase the size of your batch and area. I usually never do more than a quart at a time. But I do have several quarts of resin and Hardener "on the Ready" so there is very little wait time between batches when I'm doing large area's i.e. Decks. My mixing ration is as follows.

1 qt = 946.35 CC's
Norrmal MEKP @ 1.5% = 14 CC's
Hot Mix @ 2% = 19 CC's

Cut that in half for 2 cups of resin. Like Decker says, A Vet supply is a good place to get large syringes to use to measure your MEKP. A good 2-3 mins of mixing is highly recommended. Plenty of acetone for immediate cleanup. Especially for your glass roller. I use a cake pan to totally immerse it.

We use a couple different sized no needle syringes at work & the cheapest price delivered is always from:

KV Supply
6cc syringes w/out needle are $13 delivered for 50qty. 3cc were $11 delivered for 100qty.
