Re: 78 Starcraft aluminum deep v walk through

The boat is looking great. I also like the old tank of a trailer. I'd rather have it over built soviet issue than something that will crack in half on me later :)

Do you know if it's leaking from the bow area? That's where the majority of the brown goop was on my boat as it covered the bow area seams. I'm wondering if you can just lift your bow flooring and gruvit those seams...assuming that is the source of the leak. You might also get away with injecting gluvit into those seams starting up high with medication syringe or hypodermic. The gluvit should run lower and creep it's way into the other areas.

I used Gluvit on on all inside seams and rivets and used a thickened epoxy to do the outside bow seams. I probably should have used gluvit on the outside bow seams as well as the stuff I used won't flex. The injection trick might also work from the outside assuming it's warm enough for the stuff to flow.

Here's the link to the dude who did the whole bottom. http://www.steelheaduniversity.com/gluvit.htm

I'm pretty sure this stuff will discolor from uv exposure so it should probably be sainded and painted.

I'll post a pic of the snow here. There was no snow up till yesterday and we got a dump of snow with a blizzard. Nice and sunny today but it is getting really cold so the snow will not melt this time :)

Nice boat, If your too far north then I must be too far East, Rain all day :mad:You must have some crazy weather down there, Gone from topless and sweat to snow in one day :D What did you use for decking? Looks like a woodless product? Like the seats!

Nice SS you've got there:)

Is it 18' or 16'? The old bench seat is going to go I take it?

I'm working on a similar rig and can't wait to get her back on the water.

Yeah - the weather is nuts here sometimes. It was 65 during the day yesterday and then snowed last night.

The decking is 5/8 marine ply with about 12 coats of epoxy paint. We precut, fitted and then painted all the pieces prior to installation so that the edges are sealed up as well.

Why thank you! The old swamp boat thanks you as well. She is quite grateful to have an owner who cares for her. We are the third. She was Pennsylvania MP boat to begin with and then a fishing boat that was left out in the rain for years and now she gets treated a little better.

We bought her to take into the swamps of AL and FL to get pics of swamp wildlife. The wife is a photog who specializes in wildlife for stock use and that is a segment she has not been able to offer until now. Nice thickish hull, shallow draft, we leave the engine unhooked so it can swing up if we encounter something in thin water and we are real carefull with her. Her name is Bamagirl II as our 'Ray is Bamagirl.

Thats one nice boat. Once you finish there will be years of fun with it and very little cost. I brought an old crestliner back and here is a picture of the wooden seats I made. I use flotation cushions for seats not shown

Thank you - we think so as well. She is a lot easier to tow since we can use the family car, get's phenomenal fuel usage, pulls a skier or tube just fine and we have had a blast with her on combination play/fishing trips. No bait is allowed in the old ski boat so she has limited use for combination trips, drinks fuel like it's free and has to be towed with one of the trucks.....fuel mileage in the teens is good for them

Those are gorgeous. We look forward to a wood boat (or at least one with a lot of wood :)) when we have time to do her right. As of this moment we are both full time students.

Nice project you've got going.
I have a couple of questions on your carpet job...

- where did you buy the carpet?
- what weight is it? 20 oz seems to be where many went
- was your boat carpeted bow to stern before? (my boat has the carpet wrapped around each piece of decking)
- what did you use for a glue?
- I'm at the floatation or not replace floation point. What led you to skip it?

Anything that you wish you had done differently?
My floors are done, coated with 6 oz FG and epoxy resin, using the old floors as templates.

thanks,
mike

I reused the carpet that was in it since it was in very good shape and had not been glued down.

I have no idea what weight it is.

Yes, it was carpeted from stem to stern before.

3m waterproof spray adhesive.

I skipped flotation because it had none in it when I pulled the decking.

Yes, I wish I had sealed the inside with gluvit and installed flotation before I put the decking down. Since the decking is in - I am not redoing it anytime soon.

Good looking project I've got a similar one. I'm in Alabama too and wanted
to ask you where you got the marine plywood? I looked and called several
places but no luck. The only place I've found it is in Mobile and it ain't
cheap!

My wife is good friends with everyone in town. She talked the owner of our local supply store into ordering it for us. I don't think there is such a thing as cheap marine ply.
