I would add to that list a pile of quart size disposable buckets and a box of 2" disposable paintbrushes for the resin. A fiberglass roller. Lots of acetone (if you soak brushes in acetone right after you use them you can reuse them) and baby powder. I find that clogging my pores with lots of baby powder before getting covered in fiberglass dust helps keep the dust out of your skin so you dont itch as bad.

And you may pay more by getting supplies locally, but if they can give you advice and you can establish a rep with them, that has value.

I'm the kind of guy that needs things written down so what kind of wood exactly am I looking for???? Ask for plywood laminated?? When I was picking up the glassing materials he suggested I just use 2x8s to make it easier. White fur I think he said? I'm in the lumberyard now starring blankly at a bunch of wood totally confused

Definitely do it another day when one of you gives me some info or I do some research. The sales guy asked me what I was looking for and...

I scanned back & didn't see what size stringers you're trying to fabricate? Length & width/thickness?

When the time comes, here's a link to stringer, transom & deck fabrication:

"Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms"
from WoodOnGlass...

Scan GT1000000's thread, he made 3/4" thick, really long stringers out of a few sheets of 3/8" plywood.

Look for Auraco, MDO, Douglas Fir, Underlayment, or exterior grade plywood. You need to make sure that whatever grade of plywood you choose is made w/ waterproof glue. MDO is medium density overlay plywood NOT MDF (medium density fiberboard, the carp that DIY furniture in a flat box is usually made of). MDO looks like it has 1 or 2 faces covered with a brown grocery paper bag...

Use waterproof glue to glue up your longer then 8' stringers: Gorilla, TiteBond3, epoxy, PL premium.....

Re: 79 ski supreme

does anybody want to take this project off my hands? i dont think i can use wood with the bow of the transum? theres about a four inch difference from the middle to the edge. it is wood originally but they probably had some kind of form to flex the wood before installation?

i just need to save up for the seacast i really dont want to have anything to do with the wood work. i cant stand that stuff. im pretty sure the fiberglass guy didnt sell me enough stuff anyway allthough he really seemed to know his stuff, or at least it sounded good.

he sold me enough to tab in the new 2x6s with one layer of somthig other than what you guys all talk about not csm or 1708. he said that was overkill. and he told me not to worry about the tops of the wood being exposed? seemed kind of strange.

i should just drag it to the town dump

The curved transom isn't as difficult as you might think, but 4" is a lot of curve. If you aren't really 'into' both this boat & the rebuild of it, this project will likely only get more frustrating from here, for quite a bit. Esp if you really don't like any sort of woodworking, there is quite a bit of woodworking from now until you get the cap put back on and the interior seat boxes and doghouse installed.

If you still have the engine you pulled last year, and it's mounts, you might remount the engine if you ever got it to fire, and sell it w/ a free trailer & boat. Else it's likely to be an entirely free package, to save you the trouble of hauling it to the dump & paying to dispose of it.

It is unfortunate, but it does happen, and more often then we'd like to admit.

If you decide to dispose of it, you might consider stripping the hull of anything you might be able to sell on CL or evil-bay.

Sorry to see you throw in the towel, but you need to do what meets your needs, time frame & abilities.

Re: 79 ski supreme

This might be insanity but, I'm in the process of finishing my build. I spent the summer investing sweat, blood and energy, i think i might have beaten the steep learning curve. This would be the ideal boat for me if i were to star again, please contact me if you really decide to part ways with the project! Despite the 35 hour drive....

Re: 79 ski supreme

right, the shipping might not pan out

i called a close friend who i had forgot who manages a lumber yard. he sold me some 2 year old kiln dried white fir 2x8x18. nice straight and dry. i also picked up some pl 300 construction adhesive to bed them. some big jigsaw blades to cut the bevel.
figure id just dig the hole a little deeper before i give up

so hard to work on a boat with winter fast approaching and needing to finish two mod snowmobiles.

Re: 79 ski supreme

The problem is the size & # of voids in the laminations that make up the plywood. 'Quality' plywood made w/ waterproof glue typically has fewer voids in total, and the size of each void is typically smaller. Marine plywood is supposed to be void-free.

The larger the voids & the larger total number of voids generally makes the overall plywood parts & pieces you cut, weaker.

If you can find underlayment plywood (it should be labelled as made w/ waterproof glue), Aurauco (sp), MDO, or Douglas Fir plywood are all good, less expensive alternatives to marine plywood.

Re: 79 ski supreme

i found some doug fir underlayment on the third attempt but im an idiot and bought the wrong thickness! man im good! so going back tomarrow and get some 5/8. slot it to make theit flex

so i wet the new wood, wet some glass, and apply it to the wood on both sides, wet the transum, then clamp it to the transum and let it dry. then "tab" the new piece in around the perimiter??
