Re: 81 Sea Ray 26 Sedan Bridge I/O to OB Conversion/Restore (Pics)

I typically use the air adjustment valve (cheater) on all my spay guns, its easier to adjust it at the gun even if there is another one at the pressure pot. If yours came with one on the gun then you don't need another one.

You should be able to use a 1.8, but it will be a bit slow, using patchaid or small amounts of other things will help.

Try several different gel coat mixes through the gun before catalyzing any gel coat so you can fine tune it, or find out you need to wait for a larger tip.

Thanks ondarvr. I'll play with the 1.8 tip and send the 2.5 tip back and see if they have one that will fit the pressure pot (diameter o the threaded base was too small). I have Patchaid, but I assume the 2.5 tip would let me thin the gel coat less.

The other question was about the air input adjustment build into the gun. Since I was told I needed a cheater valve at the inlet to the gun, I was wandering if the built in adjustment replaces the need for the cheater valve.

It depends on your gun, all have two knobs located at the top back, one adjusts the volume of fluid and the other one adjusts the fan. The one we are talking about is mounted on the bottom of the gun and adjusts the total amount of air volume going into the gun.

Thanks again ondarvr. Actually, I reread your previous post (#340) and it did answer my question. I think I read it too fast the first time and missed some of the content.

Man, as much as you are on iboats, you must spend a lot of time on ebay and cl. But good to have somebody watching. I haven't because I'm still quite a ways from being ready for the engines.

On the first one, color is definitely right.

Second one, I could scarf the engines and sell the boat. Lol

Hi CK,

Finally got all caught up on your progress...

Sorry to hear about Q's misfortune...good thoughts for a speedy and full recovery to him.

I like the foam usage as sub-structure...gives me ideas...that could also be a bad thing, you know......I saw that Jas is doing some similar stuff on his tinny...using foam panels, covered in wood as structural pieces...very cool...

I really like the new gunwale set-up you are planning...will make it not only safer, but more modern looking...nice

I love how much I am learning from everything you are doing, since I will be making many alterations to my cap, when the time comes...and seeing how you tackle similar issues on your rig is inspiring and educational.

Can't offer any engine suggestions, but one...more power is always better...:)

Thanks for checking up on me the other day, I really appreciate it.

Hopefully the weather holds out for both of us this weekend, so we can get some quality boat work done...

Best Regards,
GT

Just glad to have you back, gt.

Was hoping to get some work done today. Was going to get time away from the salon. Weather was supposed to be great.

Instead, I spent tbe entire day in tbe worst funk I've been in in years. I haven't been this pissed off for long time. Couldn'even think about work of any kind. The only consulation is I know I'm not alone.

Sorry to unload

Thanks guys. I appreciate the support. Don't want to violate iboat rules so I can't say why I was upset...

But I'm better today. In fact, today was a great day. Mrs. Kick Back had her U.S. Citizenship Ceremony today.

See separate thread - http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=561106

Hopefully, back to work on the boat tomorrow.

[h=1]Staircase Moved To Boat[/h]Despite the fact that there was no water around. Early afternoon, my brother-in law helped me move my two floorboards (fiberglassed and ready to install ? meaning heavy) and the staircase from the salon down to the boat. If you remember, Q?s arm is still in a cast. Not much help from him. Didn?t stay to work on the boat. Just too darn hot.
But late afternoon, I went back. Still darn hot, but not quite so darn. Anyway, I put the staircase in place to see how it looked.

StaircaseReadyToFit.jpg

I have to trim the top and the sides. The top has some extra FG I need to trim off to let the staircase go forward about two inches. That little extra will allow the cockpit deck hatch to clear the staircase when it opens. I also have to trim the port side to match up to a filler piece I will put in on that side. The filler piece (don?t know what else to call it) will hide the conduits (PVC pipes) I will put in to the bridge and to below the cockpit deck. All the wiring will come and go through these conduits as the electrical panel will be in the main bulkhead under the staircase.

[h=1]Gel Coat Inside The Hull[/h]Next up on the agenda was to gel coat the inside of the hull on the starboard side (in the salon area). I?ve been waiting to get set up to spray this area so I could get spraying practice. But since we determined the storage yard?s compressor was too small, I decided to wait on the spraying. Not wanting to hold up the floorboard install any longer, I just rolled the gel coat on.

GelCoatHullStarboard.jpg

So, the gel coat is on (one coat), but I can't say it was a great experience. The FG supplier told me to catalyze at 2%. So I mixed up 500 ml with about 15% PatchAid and 2% (of the resin amount) catalyst Well, it kicked in about 5 minutes. Summertime in South Florida just isn?t conducive to a 2% mix. Wasted about 250 ml of gel coat (and a roller cover). Bummer.

I only had about 200 ml left in the quart can, so I mixed that at about 1.25%. Much better. That gave me plenty of time to work before it kicked. I did have to stretch it a bit to finish the area I wanted to cover.

I have several more quarts of gel coat, but each one is a different color. I wanted Mrs Kick Back to see the color so I didn?t want to do a second coat in a different color. Remember, no one will ever see this, except you guys, of course. Anyway, I called her and she came right over. She thought it was a very nice color, but as we already determined, we see too much blue in it. But it looked good. Man, I just looked at the picture while I was posting this. The camera really brought out the blue. Hummmmm! Maybe that will be a good test to use on the next batch of grey gel coat they mix for me. lol

Anyway, I?m just going to move on to putting the floorboard down (on tomorrow?s agenda). I?ll just leave it at one coat.

Re: 81 Sea Ray 26 Sedan Bridge I/O to OB Conversion/Restore (Pics)

Staircase looks right at home.

Just a question on the gel-coat...you mentioned you have several quarts and they are all different colors...since the finished coatings will probably never be seen...could you "box" them all together and make one color of them all? Or, are you wanting to see what each color looks like after it is down?

Thanks!

And yeah, bright sunny days this weekend, but humid hot for sure!

Have a Happy Fourth!

PS-extra fireworks are definitely in order for the newest member of this wonderful country...
Welcome to Citizenship, Mrs. CK...Thank You!

I have a question too. If this area is never going to be seen, why are you gel coating it?

For a longer gel time skip the patchaid and use wax solution. Patchaid itself has a very short gel time.

Re: 81 Sea Ray 26 Sedan Bridge I/O to OB Conversion/Restore (Pics)

Ahhh. Didn't realize the Patchaid shortened the working time.

To answer the "no one will ever see it" questions, I actually discussed it several pages back. Two reasons. One was for weight low in the hull (to fight top heaviness). The other was to practice spraying. But as I said, I put spraying off since I figured out the storage yard's compressor was too small. So, I went ahead and gel coated anyway.

GT, I could mix the colors. The grey I used first was the one we were thinking was a bit too blue, but I wanted to see it on something larger than my color board. In case anyone missed it, I have 4 quarts of gel coat, each a different grey, from light to relatively dark, to test different colors before choosing our final colors. Still working on it, so I will buy more quarts and use the gel coat I have in inconspicuous places (like inside the staircase).

[h=1]Starboard Floorboard Down[/h]Had big plans today. Woke up dreaming about all the things I was going to get done on the boat. But the heat and I don?t get along very well. I noticed I was moving at a snail?s pace just to keep from getting overheated. So, all I got done was the first thing on my list, to get the starboard floorboard in place.

Yesterday, I put gel coat on the inside of the hull so today it was ready for the floorboard. I started out with a rough and scuff on all the contact points and then did some grinding on the floorboard itself to get rid of some excess FG. As I said, I was moving slow and at that point, the heat finally overwhelmed me. Had to stop and go sit in the A/C for about an hour and a half until I felt better.

OK, so I think I?m ready to get back to work. A little cooler (still hot) now, so I?m moving slow. Next step was vacuum the hull and then acetone prep. I used PL Premium to bed the floorboard. I would prefer PB for this, but the amount I had to put down was just too large to do it before it kicked. Even with the PL, I barely had enough time in this heat before it started to firm up.

But it went into place easily. Nice and level. Put SS screws down into each stringer. Used the oops! method. Put the screw in, take it out, put 5200 in the hole, and put the screw back in. That way, the threads are cut on the first entry so they have 5200 in them before the screw comes back in.

Well, now its down, and tight. No rocking. No creaking. Looks like a good fit.

That was it for today/ I was wiped out. Next boat work will probably be Wednesday/ (Hey, July 4!!!!)

Man, I was hoping to do some boat work today. Then Mrs. Kickback decided to organize a cookout this afternoon. Then off to the beach for fireworks. No boat work time.

The cookout went well. I managed a Ponderosa Steak House in my younger days and managers often filled positions. I always chose the grill when it was my turn. I always get that nice cross-hatch on the meat, and everyone's steak comes off the grill at the same time, no matter how they want it cooked. Darn, that reminds me of all the grilling I did on the boat. Getting back there, slowly.

The the fireworks on the beach. Local fireworks are boring to me because, being from Cincinnati, the annual (for 40+ years) Labor Day fireworks on the Ohio River are totally awesome. Fireworks from the barges and the two bridges, its like surround fireworks. But what struck me today was all the boats out on the water and I'm stuck shoulder to shoulder (literally) with the DMV crowd on the beach. But again, I'm getting back there.

I really hope I can get some boat time tomorrow.

These guys posted quite a few 200+hp twins @ another forum I scan thru. Their site doesn't list the twins seperately, so you have to shop each brand to find them.

Hope the Admiral's 1st 'real' celebration of the 4th was a smashing success!
