I know it's one of three causes, intake manifold, head, or block cracked but what is the best way to determine where the problem lies?
Thanks for the help !

Personally, if I owned an 82 and had milky oil, I would say it's time for a rebuild. Pull it apart, have everything magnafluxed and checked to specs, put it back together. It might not be totally necessary, but that's just what I would do a this point. Then again, I do most of the work myself aside from the machining. GL.

i had water in my oil shortly after i got my 75' nineteen. was the manifold. replaced that and the riser and ain't looked back yet...... compression still the same as it was prior to the incident...... i did get hip that i had an issue right away. and got right onto the repair. maybe a day or three between the time of discovery and being done with the repair...

Re: '82 140 mercruiser- milky oil

we,ve only had the boat for a short while ,in the water maybe four times,
this problem first started when we went to go out for a ride, put the boat in the water and it would not crank . this was odd because i just ran it on muffs at home to make sure everything was ok. took it back home and pulled the plugs and found water in #3 cylinder( squirted out when i cranked it). i pulled the manifold and it did not look like it was bad(not really sure) . pulled the head off and gasket did look like it had a blown spot around the bad cylinder.
the cylinder does have score down one side of it. so i replaced gasket , torqued head back down, new gasket on manifold, oil change and started it up again. still getting water in new oil ,ran about 15 min and oil is milky again.
i could repace manifold and eliminate that for just over $200.
not sure how to proceed with this?

You pulled manifold and riser and they are original?

not sure?
manifold has BAR MARINE on the side.
they look like they have a few years on them, like the engine!

on my L6. i confirmed a bad manifold by removing it. then filling up the waterjacket while on the bench. then left it overnight. next morning. the waterjacket was empty. the exhust runner was full....

i tried that the first time i had the manifold off, but only let it sit full of water for a few minutes. no water seeping into exaust or intake ports. maybe i was a little to hasty and should hae let it sit longer.i'll try it again (overnight) to see what happens before i buy a new one.
thanks for the tip.
