Nice looking boat you have there.. Just a note, not sure you got all the foam out, but if you still have to do the cabin, I used a pressure washer with a narrow tip, Works great carving up that poured in foam, and you can get into all the nooks and crannies with it.

Nice job pressure testing the tank!

Once those tasks were complete the tank was filled with 4 psi then sprayed with a soapy detergent on the suspect areas and then you see bubbles:eek:

I didn't see any bubbles, LR. Did you?

Thanks, yes there is still foam in the cabin that will have to be removed. I will give your method a try. What pressure is your washer rated for timfives?

You did see bubbles. Do think it can be fixed or just go for another tank?

Oh man, I hope that tank is fixable. It's huge!!

What's the capacity on that thing anyway?

Re: '84-26' Starcraft Islander tear down and restoration

It looks like its got to be 80 gallons or bigger. That won't be fun on the pocket book to fill up when your done.

Its looks a lot bigger than my 52 gallon tank. Give a local welder or semi truck repair shop in the area a call and see what they say about welding it up. I saw on tv during one of the car shows awhile back a do it yourself gas tank renew kit. They mixed up x amount for the size tank they had, poured it in, and rolled the tank around a bunch to coat all the sides then dumped out any extra.

Be carefull wire wheeling that tank, wear some safety glasses and gloves. I started to clean mine that way and then switched to a pressure washer after the wheel came apart and had wires stucking in my arms, chest, and thighs. The pressure washer worked really good, the foam and dirt just washed right off of it quickly. I think the one I used was aroung 2500 psi but don't really remember it could have been bigger. Getting the foam out was not my favorite job when I did mine. I used a heavy duty garden fork to pry it up from the hull and a cross cut hand saw for cutting any that needed it. I didn't use a sawzall for fear of putting it through the hull or a stringer/rib.

Mine Pressure washer is a generic one from home depot 2500psi i think, Just use the narrow tip and have at it. Just a note, it will make a mess ;)

That tank is 100 gallons, it is so badly pitted that I think a new one is in order. A friend of mine is a tig welder, so I could buy the material and fab it up. A tank is something that you never want to be wondering about whether it's leaking or not.
Plus if I end up using blue polystyrene for floatation, gas eats that stuff:( . So I don't want to be wondering what's going on underneath the deck.:)

Yes, some serious pitting going on there. I will have to make a decision on whether to go with aluminum or stainless. I think the cost might make it easy though!

You're a better man than I am to fab a tank. But I can't weld a lick. Good luck, LR.

Got the engine pulled with the use of my skidsteer and a chunk of chain. It came out easier than I thought. A die truck that was purchased at an auction several years ago, came in handy for storing the engine in the shop, easy to move around.

Hold the phone!

That first photo there...

I do believe I see two fat alum stringers in there!

Ah! I had no idea the 470 (190) came with those!

Uh, I gotta ask, are you still thinking that the 470 will go back in? (or maybe something different?)

That looked easy. LR. Those two fat stringers will support a 4.3 or even a V8 real easy. Hint, hint. I'll help you spend your mortgage money. ;)

Without question, that engine is so fuel efficient and runs well that I don't have any problem putting it back in there. I could see changing it if it burned oil or something but the last time it was running it was good.

Yes, it came out with no trouble at all. The chain had to be choked up quite a bit so I could clear the transom, but after that it was a cinch. As far as the engine goes, I still have to get a new fuel tank my pockets aren't that deep.:D Although, I could eat KD for a while:)

Um, that may, or may not, have been what I was after:D

Good use of the skid steer!
