Good use of the skid steer!
What a great find that machine has been. It was resurrected from the dead a couple of years ago. I hope to be as successful with the boat:).

Once the engine was out everything was easier to access. The once intimidating job, became more simple when I got into it. The powersteering was removed first and when the lower exhaust tube was out of the way, the bolts and nuts were visible. As you can see in the pics the gimbal ring and bell housing came away all in one.

Hey Jas, ya mine is a little more complex with a few breaks in the aluminum and welded by the manufacturer. Which meant removing rivets & makin' a few cuts.

Too expensive! Ramen noodles and come in several flavors.

Lake - your Islander looks just like Jason's did a few weeks (months?) back.

Hey Jas, all kiddn' aside, I like looking at those first pics in your thread. Seeing that 120 omc all covered in snow and the drive unit. You've come along way and it's totally inspiring.

AH! Backhand! Good swipe GA, didn't even see that coming:p

No knock, Jas. The big ole gal sat with the M/C hole in the stern since you started the Jet. Got the Jet out of the way and you filled that hole up. I don't remember timewise when you stated mounting the transom bits, but scanning re-do threads here everyday some details start to run together - Like who did what when. The weeks (months) was just cause I don't remember when you started mounting bell housing, gimble housing and the other parts. You're way past that now. Comprende'.

Nice work so far! Did Starcraft ever make a 26 with an outboard or are they all I/O's that size?

Re: '84-26' Starcraft Islander tear down and restoration

The big 26 footer are only IO, they made them with two types of Merc, most had a smaller 6cyl, and a few had the small block 350 chevys, and even small had the 4 barrel 4 bolt main motors. I was really blessed in I got one of the 350s with the 4 barrel 4 bolt main chevy motors. Even though I changed out the carb to the englebrock its a great motor.

They did make a bunch with OMC outdrives and there is even one for sale here on craigs list for cheep (3000.00 I believe) but all the omc had a smaller motor.

Here is the link

I really think the bigger motor is needed, I would say that where I fish on Lake Onterio its needed as I cruise now at about 23 mph (gps) and my bottom paint is not finnished yet, but I figure when its done it should cruse at around 30 MPH. Thats not fast for a big lake. But speed is relitive unless a storm is comeing and you NEED to get in off the lake.
