Keen eye, 64. Or is an Eggo? Next to the channel locks.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

Welllll, per your recommendation I am strongly considering fastening after finishing. But here is what holds me up. In order to lift the decking, I have to take out the side irons, and gunnel boxes. The carpet (or vinyl) will be fastened to not only the floor, but also parts of the aluminum up front. You can see in the picture how that is done. I suppose it would still be easier to get the fabric off of the sides than it would be to get it off of the ENTIRE floor. I did just go through that and it was NOT fun.

I'm not sure you understand...

The carpet, vinyl, or paint is put on everything before the boat is put back together. That way you can take everything apart without messing anything up. All of your fasteners will be exposed and you won't have to tear anything off to get to the fasteners to take the boat apart.

My whole boat will come apart without messing up one piece of vinyl:

Hahaha. It is an eggo, WTF! I hope I didn't eat it after I set it down.

Jig, I know what you are saying. I think that is a great idea. Do you have to remove your gunnel boxes to get the floor up? All I am saying is that if I need to pull the floor up it is going to be a huge pain regardless of which way I do it, but I would much rather not have to refinish the floors again.

Do you remember which type of marine vinyl you ended up using? How is it when wet, is it slick at all?

Thanks brah. Actually, the picture with the waffle was last year. I had tempo carpet in for the summer. Just slapped it in for the time being. Did not want to rip up floors at that point. Here are my floors at the moment. :)

But I am not it a huge hurry to drop the floors yet because I am still deciding if/where to put a livewell in as well as permanent gas tank.

I used the Nautolex vinyl from Defender, lowest price I could find on the internet.

http://www.defender.com/category.jsp?path=-1|10918|311409&id=311410

The Nautoles is very non-slip, even when wet. You can actually skin your knuckles on it and draw blood when applying it. It's got a smooth pebble grain finish to it, but the vinyl kind of becomes hard when it's applied to the plywood. It isn't a cushiony vinyl. Very tough and durable.

Gotcha. I am torn between vinyl and carpet right now. I like the way carpet feels under my bare feet (so does my wife and dog) but I also dont want my friends muddy boots pissing me off either. The rails are done in exterior grade carpet, and Im not sure I want to mismatch the floor, although a nice gray may look good even if it isnt a perfect match.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

Well I'll tell ya, vinyl may not be as cushiony under the feet... but I don't even miss that part because the vinyl is so much better in every other way.

It sheds water instead of absorbing and holding it.

It looks like carpet until you get up real close and touch it.

It's a lot less stressful having vinyl instead of carpet in a boat. I used to cringe everytime someone dropped a fish on my carpet, and I wanted to beat them to death when they dropped a catfish on my carpet (with the catfish), I could almost cry when someone would deep hook a fish and the fish bled all over the carpet, spilled cokes on the carpet made me want to shoot someone, red clay mud tracked in on the carpet was grounds for a lynching!... but none of that bothers me now, the vinyl cleans up super fast and easy and red clay mud and dried fish blood doesn't even stain it. Now the only thing that bothers me is when my buddy Lester lays a live fish on his pedestal seat instead of throwing it in the livewell while he rebaits his hook. ... he claims he wipes the seat off with his butt when he sits back down.

I'll never go back to a carpeted deck.

Okay, okay, I get it. Vinyl it is :). I didn't think about the fish blood. That would definitely not come out.

Hahaha. It is an eggo, WTF! I hope I didn't eat it after I set it down.

It looks to be past the 5 second rule, but it doesn't have resin dust covering it. Waffles and coffee works.

Jason might have some 5200 on his.

Pretty sure the boxes have to be pulled to do the floor.

I have original vinyl, 1983, in mine. A wonderful green/white with 30 plus years of grime ground in. It's a little hot on the toes, not slick, and cleaning is a dream. I think the Defender vinyl is similar product and many here have used it.

Cool man good to hear. Boat is completely stripped right now, but since it doesnt leak a drop the floatation foam is dry and staying put. I will get a quart or so from US composites to fill in any voids.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

Fellas, I just ordered closed end blind rivets. I want to seal them up with 5200. I also want to put in 2 new thru-hull fittings, plastic. I read on the 3m site that 5200 does not work with some plastics. Should I just use regular silicone around these fittings?

Were these fittings recommended for below the waterline use? Where did you get them? What fittings?

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

The 3M site says

A solid adhesive intended for permanently attaching fiberglass, metal, finished woods, rigid plastics and glass. Resists vibration, water, oil, gas and detergents.

I would think thru-hulls are rigid plastic, so I don;t see a problem. A lot of boats would be at the bottom if it didn't work. Nothing sticks to some plastics but thru-hulls are made to be sealed - I say go for it and don't look back. You're safe, sutor.

Jig they are atwell fittings, so yes they are made to be below water line. And thanks for pointing that out GA. I guess it would be considered a rigid plastic.

ANyone use iboats thru hull fittings?

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

What type of vinyl do you guys think matches the carpet on the rails best? I am leaving the carpet on the rails alone. Also what type of adhesive works best with marine vinyl, and is it like contact cement where you coat both surfaces?
