Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

I installed this one on my boat:
Folding Ladder - Universal Mount | Bass Pro Shops

Cheap, easy to install, permenant, and doesn't take up any room inside the boat.

I've never used it and didn't install it for swimming or water sports, I installed it for MOB emergency... so I could crawl my old decrepit butt back in the boat if I ever fall out.:D An old man could die of hypothermia trying to get back into a deep V boat by himself.:faint2:

That's a nice ladder. I am questioning setting up a ladder in the bow because I don want people stepping on my splash well ( or slipping)

Modified this one a little, it was donated from a glasser.

Non slip on the transom cap and on the upper platform. Moved the rod holder back and it works good for something to grab.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

So Jig, I have been doing some thinking and have decided to go with carpet on the floors rather than the vinyl. Don't get me wrong, I do like the vinyl, but this boat is used as a pleasure boat as well as a fishing boat. Anyways I want the carpet to end up the side of the gunnels a little ways as it was from the factory. I also do not want to spend $40 in aluminum L rails to put at the seams to keep the vinyl down. Plus I am taking my dog with me often and she likes carpet and is afraid of vinyl, tile and hardwood.

Here's where the problem is. I used outdoor carpet adhesive and it was ridiculously hard to remove off of the wood. The middle piece of plywood had been replaced and polyurethaned, and the front and rear were the factory marine ply. Glue worked well. But, I only had it on for a year. Look at the limitations section when you get a chance and let me know if you think that includes the spar urethane that I have used. http://chapcoimpressions.com/consumer/pdfs/CI_OutdoorCarpet.pdf

The limitations seem to indicate that putting it on the spar urethane isn't a good idea... but that's just the manufacturers opinion eh?

Test an area, I'd sand with 120 grit to remove the gloss/dull the shine and give the adhesive something to grip. Sand a spot on the back of the plywood with the urethane and glue a piece of carpet down to it. Let it sit for a week and then pull the carpet off and see what happens, see if it destroys the carpet or pulls the urethane off instead. If it pulls the urethane off don't use it.

FYI, I've used the Weldwood contact cement over the Spar urethane and it has worked well.

You should sand all the urethaned surfaces you intend to put adhesive on, most adhesives don't last long/bond well on shiny surfaces.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

I absolutely agree about the sanding part. I am intending on laying the floor down in the basement, setting the carpet down on top of the wood and then riviting the wood to the aluminum strips to keep the joints tight. My plan is to make the decking one 14' or so long piece so I don't have seams, and getting a buddy to help me carry it out to the boat. I may have ONE seam just to make it easier to install. BUT the big thing here is I will install the decking AFTER I put my finish on. The carpet flaps in front of the boat will be siliconed to the gunnels (because it will hold well) then if I need to get it loose from the sides it will come up with a razor scraper, salvaging my carpet. Should work very well. I will take some of my leftover carpet and glue from last run and stick it to the back of the urethaned plywood as suggested. Do you think the contact cement would work well with the carpet?

It works very well with carpet, but it usually takes 2 coats on the back of the carpet because the first coat will be absorbed by the carpet backing.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

Alright dudes, got a TON of work on the boat done this weekend. I will get some pics up as soon as my Iphone cooperates. I got all of the interior panels cleaned up, primed and painted. I also got the hull cleaned up. Took a long time to get all of the crud out of the limber holes (rib drains) but I did it. I now have water flowing very well from bow to stern. Got the transom fully installed, and picked up the carpet. Very pleased with the overall progress.
